Expert suggests removal of Vedan's song from Calicut varsity syllabus
A.K. Anuraj, a Syndicate member affiliated to the BJP, had earlier complained to the V-C and Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, also the Chancellor of the university, saying that the inclusion of the song in the syllabus was inappropriate. Mr. Basheer pointed out in his report to the V-C that the syllabus did not warrant a comparison of Mr. Murali's song Bhumi Njan Vazhunna Idam and Michael Jackson's song They don't care about us. So, an analysis and evaluation of the literary peculiarities of these songs were irrelevant.
He also suggested that a comparative study of Kathakali music and Carnatic music citing singer Gowri Lakshmi's rendition of Ajitha Hare Madhava...could also be removed from the syllabus as it would be tough to ask BA (Malayalam) students not trained in these musical streams to compare them.

Rapper Vedan booked for rape after complaint of sexual abuse on promise of marriage
Malayalam rapper and songwriter Hirandas Murali, popularly known as Vedan, has been booked for rape on a complaint lodged by a young doctor accusing that he sexually abused her on the promise of marriage. The Thrikkakara police in Ernakulam, Kerala, registered the case after the petitioner approached the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Kochi City) on Wednesday (July 30, 2025) night. The police registered the case after recording the petitioner's statement. 'We are verifying the facts, after which further steps will be taken. The incidents leading to the complaint took place a few years ago. The case was registered by the Thrikkakara police after it was mentioned as one of the places where the alleged sexual abuse on the promise of marriage took place,' a senior police officer told The Hindu. Reportedly, the petitioner came forward with the complaint after she came across the account of another woman who allegedly had similar experiences with Vedan. Vedan had faced sexual abuse allegations in the past as well during the height of the Me Too movement. On April 28, 2025, the Hill Palace police in Kochi arrested Vedan along with eight other friends allegedly with six grams of ganja from his apartment near Vyttila in Kochi. While he was released on bail in that case, he was immediately arrested by the Forest department after he was found possessing a leopard-tooth pendant. He claimed that it was gifted to him by a fan. Later, he was released on bail in that case as well. Since then, he had run-ins with the BJP and Sangh Parivar outfits after a BJP councillor of Palakkad municipality lodged a complaint against Vedan accusing that his music defamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and promoted caste divisions. Vedan also hit out at K. P. Sasikala of the Hindu Aikya Vedhi on her take against rap music culture. He stated that those opposing him seem to be troubled by the politics that he had been advocating. 'Such responses show that what I am doing is hitting at the right point,' he had said.

‘Need a clear-cut answer': K C Venugopal demands immediate release of Catholic nuns jailed in Chhattisgarh
Congress leader K C Venugopal on Wednesday raised the issue of the two Catholic nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh last week on charges of religious conversion and human trafficking and urged the Centre to intervene, demanding that they 'be released immediately'. He was speaking during Zero Hour in Lok Sabha. The nuns from Kerala, Preethi Mary and Vandana Francis, were allegedly attacked at Durg railway station in Chhattisgarh, purportedly by the Bajrang Dal, on July 25. Venugopal said that the nuns were helping cancer patients, giving palliative care services, and helping deprived people. 'These two nuns, along with three other women, went to the station to go to Agra. The Bajrang Dal people manhandled them and tried to raise slogans. The police came, and we thought the police would rescue them,' he said. 'Last Christmas, the Prime Minister went to CBCI [Catholic Bishops' Conference of India] headquarters and gave a big speech with a promise to protect Christian and minority rights… For the last five days, these two nuns have been in jail without any reason,' Venugopal further said. Saying that Congress MPs went there a day earlier, Venugopal said the party has also written to Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, seeking the release of the nuns. 'The chief minister is repeating the same version as that of the Bajrang Dal. How can we allow it? If the government is not acting, the situation will go out of control,' he said, adding that nuns in Kerala were protesting. 'We need a clear-cut answer. The government has to intervene, and they should be released immediately,' Venugopal said. Congress MP from Kerala, Kodikunnil Suresh, raised the same issue after Venugopal did, speaking in Malayalam. The arrest of the nuns has become a major political flashpoint. On Tuesday, MPs from Kerala's ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) held separate protests over the issue outside Parliament.
