There's been rumbling for at least two or three years now that Toyota is going to release a new compact truck in the US. Those rumors have flared up big time in the last week with stories about the possibility featured in many news outlets. But all of them miss the boat entirely that this move has more to do with Slate than anyone else.In every one of these articles, the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz are the focus. That's understandable because at the moment those two are the only compact trucks for sale in the US. But they've been around for several years, yet Toyota hasn't done much to fight them.
While it's possible Toyota has something already in development and is getting closer to a reveal, the timing of this surge in talk is curious. After all, Toyota is the master of timing, like when it allowed Honda to expend tons of resources to bring the hybrid Insight to the US, then blew right past it with the Prius.
Likely, it's been developing a plan to do something similar to Ford and Hyundai with their compact trucks. But this new surge in talk coincides with the Slate reveal. That generated surprising excitement as a highly customizable, cheap, and modular electric compact truck.
Toyota likely sees Slate as the most viable threat at this point. Whatever it's been cooking up, the Japanese automaker probably feels the Maverick and Santa Cruz are jokes in comparison, which isn't too hard to imagine.
But Slate, a company with no reputation or customer base, has already racked up over 100,000 reservations. That's going to make Toyota stand up and notice.
Exactly why Toyota finds Slate threatening isn't clear, but we have a funny feeling once we see its new compact truck, it might make more sense. This very well could be a pitched battle between an industry giant and a new kid on the block.

The Toyota Supra is on its way out - again. Production of the fifth-generation GR Supra, co-developed with BMW and built in Austria alongside the Z4, is set to end by spring 2026. Toyota has already announced a Final Edition for the 2026 model year, signaling the end of this chapter, but the Supra nameplate isn't being retired. Not yet. In recent interviews with MotorTrend, Toyota executives confirmed that while the Supra will go on hiatus, it's expected to return. "It would be logical that we would have a next-gen Supra," said Cooper Ericksen, senior vice president of product planning and strategy for Toyota Motor North America. "But when and how is still TBD." What is clear is that the gap between Supra generations won't be as long as last time. Fans will recall the two-decade stretch between the legendary fourth-generation Supra and its modern GR-branded reboot in 2019. Ericksen insists that Toyota's goal is to shorten that downtime significantly, though he didn't offer a concrete timeline. Cost is a major factor. New global regulations, particularly around emissions and safety, are pushing automakers to either invest heavily in updates or start from scratch. For Toyota, refreshing the Supra isn't feasible without a full overhaul. "It needs to be a new house," Ericksen said. "When we can get the new house built is the question." Toyota hasn't officially greenlit a successor, but the intention is there. Whether the next Supra will be built in partnership, as the current one was with BMW, or like the GR86 with Subaru BRZ, remains undecided. David Christ, general manager of Toyota's U.S. division, said he'd love to be involved in planning a new Supra, but admitted the decision lies with Toyota's global leadership in Japan. There's also the issue of prioritization. Toyota is currently overhauling its core lineup, including the recently revealed 2026 RAV4, which debuts a new electric platform, multimedia suite, and safety tech. With more than 30 Toyota and Lexus models in the U.S. alone, the company's resources are stretched. It's hard to argue that the Supra has carved out a loyal niche. Since its return, Toyota has leaned hard into enthusiast models under its Gazoo Racing (GR) sub-brand - from the GR Corolla to the GR86 - and a next-gen Supra would only bolster that identity. "We'll just have to wait and see," Ericksen said. "My goal is to get a great next-gen product that our enthusiast crowd can fall in love with again." So yes, the Supra is leaving, but not for good. The 2026 Toyota bZ makes a leap forward with improvements for everything from the subcompact EV's name to its charging system. The 2022 bZ4X was an uncharacteristic disappointment from the world's largest automaker. Overpriced and under-equipped, it was hamstrung by everything from uncompetitive technology to a ludicrous name. Toyota listened to its critics and turned one of the world's most formidable continuous improvement machines loose. Renamed the bZ ― still not poetry, but the badge no longer looks like a laser printer threw up ― the new model is competitive with small electric SUVs like the Kia Niro, Hyundai Kona and Fiat 500e. The 2026 bZ goes on sale in the second half of 2025. Detailed figures for price, range and charging will be available later. I recently drove a loaded bZ Limited through the exurbs surrounding Toyota's North America headquarters in Plano. It felt like a completely different vehicle from the bZ4X Limited I tested a couple of months ago. The bZ gets two sizes of lithium-ion battery: a 74.7 kWh unit delivers up to 314 miles range and a 57.7 kWh unit rated at 236 miles. The battery is now capable of pre-conditioning, which speeds up charging and reduces energy use in cold weather. Toyota Tundra recall: Is Toyota's most expensive truck reliable or plagued with issues? A built-in NACS charging port provides access to Tesla's DC fast charging network. An adaptor will be necessary for CCS chargers common at other charging stations. An onboard charger upgraded from 7 to 11 kW will hasten charging at the 240v connections most EV owners use at home. Plug & Charge software makes charging fast and easy at participating chargers including Electrify America, EVgo, ChargePoint and Tesla. Maximum power increases dramatically, from 214 to 338 hp for the AWD model and 201 to 221 hp for FWD. The exterior styling benefits from updated front LED running lights and fascia that bring the nose into harmony with Toyota's "hammerhead" nose. Body-color front fascia and cladding around the wheels is also new. Driving impressions The '26 fairly leaps away from stops compared with its under-power predecessor. Toyota claims a 4.9-seconds 0-60 mph for the AWD bZ. It was mum on the previous model's acceleration, and not out of modesty. The steering was responsive in my time in neighborhoods, shopping districts and along wide, smooth roads that curved between corporate campuses and public parks. The brakes are firm and easy to modulate. New steering column paddles adjust regenerative braking to recapture energy, but there's no one-pedal setting to bring the bZ to a full stop. The front seat is roomy, with a big center console that holds two new wireless charging pads. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. The new dash has a 14-inch touch screen. The instrument cluster is new, too, bigger and easier to read. A heat pump reduces energy use for heating and cooling the cabin. Standard heated steering wheel and front seats further reduce cold-weather energy use. Climate control options include ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a radiant front-seat foot and leg heater. Why buy a 2026 Toyota bZ? Price and charging time are huge unknowns, but there's lots to like about the 2026 Toyota bZ. Its improved power and battery size give it competitive performance and range. Revised lights and exterior color pattern make it look like a grown-up vehicle, as opposed to the bZ4X's cobbled-together appearance. The interior of my bZ Limited was comfortable, trimmed in appealing soft materials and roomy. Hundreds of Thousands of Toyota Tundras Recalled Over a Hidden Problem
If there's one thing people count on from Toyota, it's rock-solid reliability. These are the vehicles that rack up miles like trophies and rarely flinch. But hey, even legends have off days. Toyota just announced a major recall of its full-size Tundra pickup—proof that perfection's a high bar for anyone. This recall affects over 443,000 Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid trucks from model years 2022 through 2025. That's a hefty number of pickups, but thankfully, the problem at hand isn't catastrophic. We're not talking fireballs from mirror adjustments or transmissions going full Michael Bay. Instead, it's a much smaller gremlin: the reverse lights might not turn on when you're backing up. Still, it's not something to shrug off. Without those lights, drivers lose visibility at night, and pedestrians or nearby cars might not realize a truck is moving in reverse. The culprit? Moisture sneaking into the light housings and slowly corroding the electrical connections—annoying, but fixable. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has weighed in on the situation, and its report offers some specifics. 'This recall only affects the 2022–2025 model year Tundra and Tundra Hybrid vehicles equipped with reverse lamp assemblies of a specific design using a specific adhesive for the vent patch." In other words, not every truck is guaranteed to have the issue, but plenty might. As the report puts it, 'Toyota is unable to estimate the percentage of the involved vehicles to contain the defect.' It's a bit of a moisture mystery. 'Whether the issue, in each case, will actually lead to both reverse lamps not illuminating depends on whether the multi-layer vent patch has allowed moisture to enter the reverse lamp assembly and caused corrosion of electrical components.' Toyota will fix the reverse light issue by swapping out the faulty lighting assemblies and repairing the wiring harness, at no cost to you. If your Tundra is part of the recall, expect an official notice in the mail by June 25, 2025. Toyota's internal codes for this fix are 24TB06 and 24TA06, while NHTSA's official campaign number is 25V322000. Got questions?
