Cocaine raid brothers ordered to pay back profits
Two drug-dealing brothers who stole cocaine worth £1.3m from a notorious Merseyside gang have been ordered to hand over £80,000 or face further jail time. Jason Cox, 38, and Craig Cox, 35, were jailed in 2023 for conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to possess criminal property and supplying cocaine and cannabis. The men. from Salford, were told failure to pay would result in nine months being added to their prison sentences during a Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) hearing at Manchester Crown Court on Wednesday. A judge concluded Jason Cox had earned £1,856,944, from his criminal activities and his brother £1,674,443 - but each had just over £40,000 left in available assets.
In May 2020 they along with two accomplices raided a house where drugs were stored in West Derby, Liverpool, leaving the occupier with severe machete injuries. The cocaine belonged to a violent criminal gang known as the Huyton Firm, run by Knowsley brothers Vincent and Francis Coggins.The robbery set off a chain of events that a court heard appeared to be heading towards a series of murders - but police stepped in after accessing the gang's messages by infiltrating the Encrochat encrypted messaging network.
Prosecutors in his sentencing hearing outlined how Vincent Coggins wrongly concluded that another Liverpool based drug-dealer, Brian Maxwell jnr, was responsible and discussed having him killed.Maxwell's father, Brian Maxwell snr, became aware his son's life was at risk and negotiated with Coggins, offering to hand-over property and cash worth in excess of £1m to cover his losses even though he knew his son was not involved. Coggins, who was jailed for 28 years for blackmail and drugs trafficking, said he would accept the deal but in messages to his criminal allies suggested he would "kill them in few months wen [sic] its all calm down", the court heard.
It only emerged after Merseyside Police rounded up members of the Huyton Firm that the Cox brothers were in fact responsible for the robbery - having been tipped-off by a Liverpool drug-dealer called Richard Caswell who joined them on the raid. Jason Cox was sentenced to 14 years and eight months in prison in August 2023, while Craig Cox received 13 years and six months - later reduced to 11 years on appeal. A third brother, 41-year-old Lee Cox, was not involved in the cocaine raid but was part of the family's other criminal activities and was also ordered to repay £40,000. He had been jailed for eight years. A final confiscation hearing will take place on 28 February at Manchester Crown Court for four of their associates - including Caswell.Luke Clements, specialist prosecutor from the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) Proceeds of Crime Division, said: "If we find more assets in the future, the CPS can take them back to court for an increased confiscation order to be made against them."

One townhouse in Glasgow's plush Park Circus was bought by Barrowman's Knox business group for £1.7m in 2020. The couple have now reportedly sold this to a photographer for £2m last year. Another nearby townhouse was sold for £2.8m, allegedly to a Scottish musician, who was not named. It was bought in July 2020 for just over £1.4m. A spokesperson for the NCA confirmed an investigation is still ongoing into PPE Medpro. 'The NCA opened an investigation in May 2021 into suspected criminal offences committed in the procurement of PPE contracts by PPE Medpro,' they said. 'This ongoing investigation remains a priority for the agency. The two unnamed male victims were rushed to the hospital following the stabbing at Dupont Circle Park during the LGBTQ+ celebrations yesterday evening. He remains conscious, and his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. Everything we know as body found near UK airport in car 'abandoned for months'
A dead body was found in the back seat of a car parked near Gatwick Airport on Friday - locals claimed the car had been abandoned for months and was covered in dust A dead body has shockingly been discovered in the back seat of a car parked close to Gatwick Airport. The white BMW had reportedly been parked just a mile away from the major airport for months, but the corpse was only discovered on Friday. Ticket inspectors were also believed to have been in the area and slapped notices on the vehicle but failed to see the dead body inside the car. Forensic officers were spotted at the scene along with police as an investigation to establish how the person died and how their lifeless body was missed has been launched. How was the body found? The car was noticed after locals sent Crawley Borough Council multiple complaints to report a parking violation. The local council issued a warning notice on May 19 and detailed how the car was "untaxed", even slapping a note on the car that threatened it would be towed unless moved in a week. Despite this, the car is taxed until January 1, 2026, according to the government's vehicle tax site, and has a valid MOT until November 25. It is understood the alarm was raised by a recovery vehicle driver who went to take the car away. They called police to report a possible dead body inside the vehicle. How did the recovery vehicle driver spot the body? A person in a local Facebook group described the moment the recovery vehicle driver found the dead body. They claimed the driver "saw a man on the back seats, with a blanket over the front two seats to build a 'barrier' across as he was lying on the backseat - most likely was sleeping in the back". Another person added: "A recovery driver came this morning and smashed the back window to take the motor. As he did that he noticed the dead body on the back seats." Where was the dead body found? The vehicle was parked around a mile away from Gatwick Airport. It had been left at an industrial estate on Whittle Way in Crawley, around 2.3 miles away from Junction 10 of the M23. This road is home to several businesses and close to Parcelforce Worldwide's airport depot. How long has the body been there? It is unclear exactly how long the dead body had been left in the car - which was covered in dust. Some locals claimed the vehicle had been parked in the same spot since October last year. Other residents in a Facebook group shared how long they had seen the vehicle parked for. One person said: "I reported it about four months ago but the council only put stickers on it - but it has been there for eight months now." How did the person die? The circumstances around the tragic death have not been made public. It is unclear how the person died but Sussex Police confirmed the death is not currently being treated as suspicious. What have the police said? Police revealed an investigation into the shock discovery has been launched. A spokesman for Sussex Police said: "Police were called to Whittle Way in Northgate, Crawley, at around 10.30am on Friday, 6 June, to reports of a body found in a vehicle. "Enquiries are ongoing to identify the individual and establish the full circumstances of the situation."
