St. John's native Benjamin Veitch is the province's top-ranked skater heading into the draft, ranking seventh out of 381 eligible prospects from across Quebec and Atlantic Canada. The 15-year-old left-handed forward displayed tremendous scoring touch during the 2024-25 season, scoring 21 goals in 29 regular-season games and adding 10 goals in 10 playoff games with the York Simcoe Express U16 AAA squad in Aurora, Ontario.

Just a short drive away across the Greater Toronto Area is where you will find the province's top-ranked defensive prospect, 15-year-old Quinn Norman from Conception Bay South. The well-rounded rearguard is the third-ranked defenseman among all Atlantic Canadian skaters and collected three points in four games at the OHL Cup as a member of the Vaughan Kings.

Back at the QMJHL Draft Lottery in late April, it was determined that the Newfoundland Regiment would have three first-round selections at the upcoming QMJHL Draft, taking place in Quebec City on June 6 and 7.
Article content
Given the club's draft selections are the fifth, sixth and eighth overall picks, it's not impossible to fathom that one or both players may be available when the team makes its selections.

Whether or not the team chooses to bring one or both of these players back home via the draft would be the decision of the yet-to-be-confirmed general manager and/or head coach.

The kids are alright: NL Regiment rookies shine at Team Canada camp

Article content While he wasn't able to pry himself away from training camp preparations to be able to catch the action in person, Newfoundland Regiment head coach Gordie Dwyer couldn't help but smirk every time his phone lit up over the last few days with messages from folks who were impressed with the performances from the trio of Regiment rookies trying to make a name for themselves at Hockey Canada's U17 selection camp this past week. Article content Article content Newfoundland natives Ben Veitch and Quinn Norman joined their new teammate and fellow 2025 QMJHL first-rounder Phenwick Maclean in Oakville, Ontario and made the most of their opportunity to strut their stuff in front of Hockey Canada brass just weeks ahead of the Regiment's inaugural training camp. Article content Article content Article content Upwards of 80 of the country's top U17 players were split into four teams and competed in a series of exhibition games as Hockey Canada officials deliberated which players would represent the country at the 2025 U17 World Hockey Challenge coming up in October in Truro, N.S. Article content Article content All three Regiment players made strong cases for themselves, as each of them found the back of the net during the three-game mini-tournament. Article content Article content St. John's native Veitch arguably turned the most heads, thanks in large part to his hulking size and strength on the puck and a tidy four-point game to start his tournament, including two goals and two assists. Article content 'Look at Ben Veitch on his first day,' Dwyer said, his tone almost like a proud father. 'He had a great day on the score sheet.' Article content As the lone defender to represent the Regiment, Dwyer was quite impressed with the two-way play of the smooth-skating Quinn Norman, who finished camp with a goal and an assist. Article content 'For a lot of these guys, that's the first time playing amongst the elite level players in the country, and the first opportunity for all of them to be able to size each other up. Not only did our players perform well, not only did Hockey Canada take notice, but I'm sure that the rest of the players took notice of those guys as well.'

UPEI men's hockey team adds P.E.I. player

Simon Hughes and Forbie MacPherson call it a perfect fit. Article content Hughes, a 21-year-old rugged forward from Stratford, P.E.I., has committed to joining the MacPherson-coached UPEI Panthers for the 2025-26 Atlantic University Sport (AUS) Men's Hockey Conference season. Article content Article content 'Obviously, growing up and watching games, I have a connection with Forbie and with it being in my hometown, (playing for the Panthers) was always in the back of my mind,' Hughes told The Guardian in a phone interview July 21. 'At the end of last year, I had a couple of options, but when I looked at all of them I thought UPEI would be the best option for me. A, to stay at home and B, have a coaching staff that I really trust and had a big interest in me and want me to get to the next level. Article content MacPherson said Hughes has been a player who has been on the Panthers' radar for a few years now. Article content 'Simon is somebody I have known as a player and a person for a long time,' said MacPherson. 'He's somebody in his minor days we identified very much as a high-end hockey player from Prince Edward Island and if it ever came to fruition that he would be going to U Sports, he would be somebody we would obviously be very interested in and excited about. Article content 'We started the recruiting process early with Simon and we are very excited to get him onboard.' Article content Article content Hughes played the last 2 ½ seasons with the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Hughes recorded 10 goals and 29 assists last season after a QMJHL career-high 35 points and 21 goals during the 2023-2024 season. Article content Article content 'Once you have skill you always have that, but he's changed his game to more forechecking and playing a lot in the paint,' said MacPherson. 'If you watched him score goals with the Islanders the last couple of years, a lot of it is getting to those dirty areas, winning the battles in the corner, winning the race to the front of the net, winning the battle and knocking in rebounds. Article content 'He's a guy who has always been elite, but I feel his game has changed significantly over the years.' Article content Transition Article content Hughes is confident his style of play and size will help him have a successful transition into the AUS, which features bigger and older players than major junior. Article content 'I'm a big up-and-down straight-line winger who I think has good net-front skill and will be someone who is out there every night and will finish every hit, get in people's faces, and play a real tough game as well as doing a lot of corner work and the dirty work,' said Hughes, who will join former Islanders' teammates Keiran Gallant and Jakob Robillard with the Panthers.
