Fifa to fund research into women's ACL injuries

BBC News29-04-2025

Fifa is to fund research into whether hormonal fluctuations during menstrual cycles could be contributing to the rise in anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in women's football. The year-long study at Kingston University London will begin next month.Research suggests female footballers are two to six times more likely to suffer the injuries than their male counterparts.Vivianne Miedema, Beth Mead, Leah Williamson and Sam Kerr are among the players to have suffered the injury over the past two years.
"We want to examine whether athletes may be more predisposed to injuries because of the functional changes in terms of their anatomy and physiology during the menstrual cycle," said Simon Augustus, senior lecturer in sport biomechanics at the university."We know hormones fluctuate during different phases of the cycle but we don't yet know how much of an influence that may have on the risk of injury."Players from London clubs, including Fulham and Chelsea, as well as some in the grassroots game, will take part in the research by regularly having their blood and physical performance tested. The research will track hormone concentrations through their menstrual cycles, particularly oestrogen and progesterone, with previous research suggesting they could be linked to increased ligament laxity and decreased neuromuscular reaction times.Scenarios that commonly lead to ACL injuries, such as rapid directional changes and landing after heading the ball, will be analysed to see if there is a correlation with hormone levels."We know some injuries are unavoidable, but we're attempting to help those individuals who injure their ACL outside of impact actions. Those are the ones where we might have more chance to intervene and prevent them from taking place by utilising strength training or tweaking technique," Augustus said."There are so many different factors involved with ACL injuries. We are starting to research this from an individual approach and look at an athlete's whole profile and putting protocols in place to reduce risk."
In May 2024, research from University College London, University of Bath and St Mary's University suggested players are more likely to get injured at certain points of their menstrual cycle. The peer-reviewed study found 26 players they monitored were six times more likely to pick up a muscle injury in the days leading up to their period, compared to when they were on their period. The Professional Footballers' Association (PFA), Fifpro, Nike and Leeds Beckett University have launched a separate three-year study into ACL injury prevention. It will focus on environmental factors, such as facilities, the number of staff in ratio to their squad sizes, frequency of access to training facilities, travel and playing schedules.Unsuitable football boots, equipment and poor pitches have also been mentioned as other possible causes.Brighton chief executive Paul Barber told BBC Sport last month that the club is preparing its own research to ensure the surface at their new women's team stadium is suitable.

Why summer transfer window closes today at unusual time and when it reopens

Premier League clubs are facing a slightly different summer this year with two transfer windows having been announced by FIFA with the first deadline on the horizon Premier League clubs have two transfer windows to get major deals over the line this summer. FIFA have confirmed that the transfer window will be split in two for the first time ever. The first window opened on June 1 and will shut on Tuesday, June 10. That decision has given clubs the opportunity to get a number of deals done. ‌ Liverpool and Manchester United have acted by signing Jeremie Frimpong and Matheus Cunha respectively. Unsurprisingly, Chelsea have also been busy having made six new signings already. ‌ And the business might not stop there. Manchester City have THREE deals in the pipeline, while Liverpool continue to chase the lucrative signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. But why has the window been changed? Mirror Football has all of the details you need to know… When does the transfer window shut? The first window shuts on Tuesday, June 10, at 7pm BST. That is to allow all relevant federations to be on the same page. The window will reopen on June 16 and will run all the way until September 1, also shutting at 7pm as opposed to the traditional 11pm time. Why has it been done? Basically, it is to allow all of the clubs playing at this summer's Club World Cup to sign some new players ahead of the tournament. It gets underway this weekend. A statement from FIFA confirming the decision read: 'In line with the Regulations for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ and the relevant amendments to the Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players, all 20 Member Associations whose clubs will participate in FIFA's groundbreaking competition have confirmed the opening of an exceptional registration window from 1 to 10 June for all their affiliated clubs to allow new players signed to compete in the tournament. ‌ 'The deadline for the final player list has been set as 10 June 2025, allowing each participating club to bring any new players signed in this special window to the United States. ‌ 'The Member Associations concerned are located in: Argentina, Austria, Brazil, Egypt, England, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea Republic, Mexico, Morocco, New Zealand, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and the United States. 'The Regulations for the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, which were approved by the FIFA Council in October 2024, seek to address technicalities and equalise differences in registration periods and domestic-season timings between participating clubs to the greatest extent possible, while affording flexibility to the Member Associations in question. 'Participating clubs will also be able to replace and add players during a restricted in-competition period from 27 June to 3 July 2025 within a set limit and according to specific limitations, including the fact that a 'standard' registration window must be open for the club at the time. The objective is to encourage clubs and players whose contracts are expiring to find an appropriate solution to facilitate the players' participation. This will ensure that the best players will be playing, allowing clubs to add new recruits even during the tournament.' ‌ What deals have been done? Real Madrid have taken advantage of the window by agreeing a deal to sign Trent Alexander-Arnold early from Liverpool. The Reds have replaced him with Jeremy Frimpong. Meanwhile, Chelsea have been busy, signing Liam Delap among five others. Manchester City are also hoping to seal a host of deals including Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri. Celtic close in on Fulham teenage striker Celtic are close to agreeing terms with Fulham striker Callum Osmand. It's understood the 19-year-old has been offered a contract extension with Fulham, but he's indicated his desire to join the Scottish champions. If personal terms can be agreed, Osmand will undergo a medical with Celtic and join the club once his Fulham contract expires next month. Fulham will be due training compensation. Thomas Tuchel feels Club World Cup absence gives Liverpool and Arsenal advantage

The England head coach is trying to stay relaxed about any potential impact FIFA's new competition, which starts on Saturday, will have on his players, and his stated ambition to put a second star on the England shirt by winning next summer's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico. However, the German is convinced the tournament will be pivotal for who wins the English league title next year, and will put the more rested Reds and Gunners in pole position. 'I think (the Club World Cup) will have a huge impact and it will give Liverpool and Arsenal a huge advantage in the next season to not be there,' Tuchel said. 'I think it will be a very nice experience for the players who are there to play this tournament for the first time, so I have mixed feelings about it. 'I decided not to worry too much, because why should I? It is a given, and no-one knows what will be the outcome of it or the effect. 'We will deal with the effect when the effect comes and let's see.' Nine of Tuchel's group for last Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Andorra and Tuesday night's friendly against Senegal are heading to the Club World Cup, but he insisted: 'There is not one player who says 'by the way, I would like to be on the bench and save myself for the Club World Cup'. They are hungry to play. 'The games are not the problem, it is just the amount of time that it occupies from the players, and they need a proper rest somewhere in this calendar which they hardly get.' One of those nine is Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane, who is set to captain England again at the City Ground in Nottingham. Twenty-four members of the squad trained at St George's Park on Monday, with Jude Bellingham absent due to his attendance at a family funeral. He was due to return to the camp later in the day.
