Xenon gas could speed Everest treks. There's concern it could also leave climbers dangerously unprepared

When Canadian Chris Dare attempted to climb Mount Everest in 2019, one of the challenges he faced was a serious overcrowding problem.
There were so many people making the attempt that the final push to the summit of the world's highest mountain took twice as long as expected due to bottlenecks, which he says made the climb far more dangerous. Eleven people were killed on the mountain during that year's climbing season.
But after a team of British climbers who had inhaled xenon gas recently made headlines for reaching the summit in five days, the B.C. resident is worried the issue could be made significantly worse.
Making the mountain easier to summit, Dare told CBC News, will likely attract more climbers, "exacerbating the already serious overcrowding problem."
That potential problem is just one of many issues being raised around the use of the gas by mountain climbers.
5 days to climb Everest
Xenon is a colourless and odourless gas found in very small amounts in the Earth's atmosphere and is known to have some anaesthetic properties and medical uses, like helping to diagnose lung problems, according to the Mayo Clinic website.
Mountain guide Lukas Furtenbach said last week that he and a team of British climbers had inhaled xenon gas before embarking on an expedition where they climbed the 8,848 metre peak of Everest less than five days after departing London.
The climbers spent months preparing, Furtenbach told The Associated Press upon his return to Kathmandu. He said they slept in hypoxic tents that simulate high-altitude conditions, underwent a xenon gas treatment at a clinic in Germany just two weeks before heading to Nepal and used supplemental oxygen during their climb.
Climbers normally spend weeks at base camp to allow their bodies to adjust to the higher altitude. To prepare their bodies for the lower air pressure and lower level of oxygen available at the top of Everest, they make practice runs to the mountain's lower camps before beginning their final attempt to reach the peak.
"Climatization is a process in which the body adapts to a high-altitude environment and makes kind of physiological changes to allow you to function in a hypobaric, hypoxic environment," said Dr. Rob Casserley, a British doctor who works in Quebec and has scaled Mount Everest eight times.
Dare says he believes more studies are needed on the use of xenon to aid climbers.
"It just seems very, very risky at this onset, right at the beginning," he said. "It's really hard for me to think about ... using a new type of technique. What type of safety protocol is involved with that?"
He's also concerned that if climbers come to rely more on xenon gas, they'll forgo the training needed to make such climbs and discover too late that their pre-acclimatization efforts didn't necessarily work.
As a result, climbers' bodies may not be ready to deal with the lack of oxygen at high altitudes, which means they could develop altitude sickness and end up with fluid build-up in the lungs (pulmonary edema) and swelling of the brain (cerebral edema), he said.
"You're not training the traditional way of being on the mountain for a month and a half, two months to acclimatize in the natural environment."
'Great psychological risk'
Casserley says the advantage of a longer expedition is that it allows climbers to acclimatize over time. That means they become stronger and more "street-wise and savvy on the mountain," he said.
In 2015, he survived avalanches on Mount Everest that were triggered by an earthquake in Nepal. He says climbing Everest is about 90 per cent psychological and 10 per cent physical.
"You start putting in people who've just come cold turkey out of their normal environment, I think it will put them at great psychological risk of having some kind of meltdown and not having the skills necessarily to get themselves down in a kind of so-called disastrous situation," Casserley said, noting that this could endanger a lot of people.
He also questions the science around using xenon gas to aid climbers, noting that there's been some evidence that it can increase erythropoietin (EPO), the hormone that stimulates the production of red blood cells, which in turn increases the capacity of blood to carry oxygen in the body. And that could possibly lead to enhanced athletic ability that would allow people to scale a mountain at a faster rate.
But he says that so far, there's only anecdotal evidence that the gas is performance enhancing.
(In 2014, the World Anti-Doping Agency added xenon gas to its list of banned substances after claims surfaced that it can be used by athletes to help boost performance.)
Climbers' observations shouldn't be dismissed
Dr. Peter Hackett, a high-altitude researcher at the University of Colorado School of Medicine who has also scaled Mount Everest, says Furtenbach's observations shouldn't be dismissed.
"I trust observations of experienced and skilled climbers. They know their bodies. They know how they react to high altitude," Hackett said. "If they thought there was a difference with the xenon, then I think it's upon science to try to find out if that's really true."
But he says it's also important to stress that Furtenbach's crew slept in hypoxic tents for three months before they went to the mountain and also used oxygen on the mountain, two things that are already known to make a big difference.
To say xenon on its own was responsible for their quick ascent is "misinformation," he said.
Hackett noted that Ukrainian climber Andrew Ushakov claims to have recently climbed Everest from sea level to the summit in a record four days with supplemental oxygen and pre-acclimatization in a hypoxic tent, but without the use of xenon.
"He did even better than these other guys," Hackett said.
He says the idea that xenon gas might be useful in high altitudes because it could increase red blood cells and protect vital organs from low levels of oxygen hasn't been shown in studies.
"There's no science to say that this works at high altitudes for climbers, and there's no science to say that it doesn't."
Hackett says it's worth researching the effects of xenon, but not because it could be a way for climbers to scale mountains faster.

Nick Arbuckle is again proving the importance of quarterback depth in the CFL. Arbuckle is expected to be the starter Friday night when the Grey Cup-champion Toronto Argonauts visit the Montreal Alouettes. Incumbent Chad Kelly suffered a serious leg injury in last year's East Division final and was only recently cleared to practise. Kelly required surgery for a fractured tibia and fibula that occurred in Toronto's 30-28 win over Montreal. That thrust Arbuckle into Toronto's starting lineup for its Grey Cup showdown with Winnipeg and the veteran responded by earning MVP honours after passing for 252 yards and two TDs in the Argos' 41-24 victory. Kelly, the CFL's 2023 outstanding player, missed Toronto's entire pre-season and first nine regular-season games last year after being suspended by the league for violating its gender-based violence policy. Toronto went 5-4 before Kelly was reinstated with Cameron Dukes (4-4) and Arbuckle (1-0) under centre. Dukes was among the Argos' final cuts last weekend. Kelly has a stellar 20-5 record as a CFL starter, while Arbuckle has also made 25 career starts (10-15). But this development further illustrates the importance of quarterback depth for CFL teams. And it's a lesson many have taken to heart, as eight of the nine clubs have experienced backups on their roster. On Friday night, Davis Alexander will begin his first full season as Montreal's starter. But backing him up will be veteran McLeod Bethel-Thompson, a two-time Grey Cup champion with Toronto (2017, '22) who started last season with Edmonton. Alexander, 26, was 4-0 last season for Montreal when veteran Cody Fajardo was injured. But he's entering just his fourth CFL season and first as the Als' starter. Bethel-Thompson has 60 career CFL starts under his belt (27-33). And in '22, he led the CFL in passing yards (4,731) and TDs (23) as Toronto went on to capture the Grey Cup. Dru Brown begins his second season as Ottawa's starter and sports a 10-7-1 record. Dustin Crum and Tyrie Adams are both behind him, each having started for the Redblacks, although Adams suffered a season-ending knee injury in his first — and only — CFL start in 2023. Hamilton's Bo Levi Mitchell returns after leading the CFL in passing (5,451 yards) and TDs (32) last year. When the Tiger-Cats open their season visiting the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday, Mitchell, 35, will look to become the fastest player in league history to earn 100 career regular-season wins. A win in Calgary would come in Mitchell's 141st career start, ahead of Hall of Famers Ron Lancaster (149) and Tracy Ham (151). Injuries limited Mitchell to six games in 2023, when rookie Taylor Powell made nine starts and added another last year. Nathan Rourke begins the season as B.C.'s starter. The CFL's top Canadian in 2022 rejoined the Lions last year after NFL stints with Jacksonville, New England, the New York Giants and Atlanta, splitting time with veteran Vernon Adams Jr. B.C. dealt Adams to Calgary, then signed veteran Jeremiah Masoli, who has made 59 career CFL starts (28-31). Tre Ford, 27, begins his first full season as Edmonton's starter. The 2021 Hec Crighton Trophy winner from Niagara Falls, Ont., signed a three-year extension with the Elks after posting a 9-9 record since being taken in the first round of the 2022 CFL draft by the club. Edmonton dealt Bethel-Thompson's rights to Montreal for the rights to Fajardo, the 2023 Grey Cup MVP. Fajardo, 33, is younger than Bethel-Thompson (36) and sports a tidy 43-29-1 record as a CFL starter. Adams will be tasked with returning Calgary to the CFL playoffs after it missed the post-season last year for the first time since 2004. The 32-year-old enters his ninth season in Canada (38-22 as a starter). But behind Adams are first-year CFL players P.J. Walker and Josh Love. Walker joined the Stampeders late last season on the practice roster after appearing in 21 NFL games (nine starts) from 2020 to 2023. Trevor Harris, 39, returns under centre for Saskatchewan and enters his 13th CFL season. But injuries have limited Harris to just 17 regular-season starts over the last two years. Behind Harris is Jake Maier, who made 45 starts over four seasons with Calgary (18-26-1) before signing with Saskatchewan this off-season. Zach Collaros, also entering his 13th CFL season, looks to lead Winnipeg to a sixth straight Grey Cup appearance and third victory. The 36-year-old American recently signed a one-year extension with the Bombers. But veteran Chris Streveler is expected to start when Winnipeg opens its season hosting B.C. on June 12. The CFL suspended Collaros for one game last month for failing to respond to an off-season drug-testing request. Streveler, 30, suffered a season-ending knee injury in a 26-21 win over Saskatchewan on Sept. 7. He signed a one-year extension with the Bombers during the off-season and has made 13 career CFL starts (5-8).

1 injured after fire at Leduc County waste management facility

A contract worker was hospitalized after a fire broke out at the Leduc and District Regional Waste Management Facility Saturday night. Leduc County Fire Services said in a news release Sunday firefighters responded to the call at 8:20 p.m. Crews arrived on scene and worked to contain the fire, which spread rapidly due to strong winds. Initial efforts by on-site staff to control the fire were unsuccessful, according to the waste management facility, located at 49444 Range Road 244 in Leduc County. "The site manager and two other operators attempted to put the fire out with soils and the regular process they've been trained on," said Lee Harris, director of operations for the facility. "That didn't work, so the fire got out of control. There were really strong winds yesterday which inflamed them." The injured worker is employed by Environmental 360 Solutions, a contractor at the site. The company has not yet responded to a request for comment from CBC News. Harris said the man was hospitalized but the facility is respecting the family's space and has no update on his current condition. Quick action from contractors and first responders helped keep the situation contained, according to Harris. "The on-site contractors did an amazing job of smouldering everything with dirt," he said. "It's under control, but because landfill fires are sort of unpredictable, we're monitoring this site to make sure those flare-ups don't happen." Alberta Occupational Health and Safety is now investigating the incident. "It is always tragic when a worker is hurt or dies on the job," OHS said in a statement to CBC News." Alberta's government is focused on having all workers return home healthy and safe after every workday." The cause of the fire is still unknown and the event has been turned over to the landfill operator, Leduc County said, adding that it may be some time before a cause is determined. The county clarified in a statement that it did not contract any equipment operators during the emergency response. Harris, with the landfill facility, said the fire was out shortly after it started but certain areas are still closed to the public.
