Petrol hits Rs1200 per litre in Kurram, diesel unavailable amid road blockages
In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa's tribal district of Kurram, petrol is being sold at an alarming rate of Rs1200 per litre due to the prolonged closure of roads, according to media reports.
Since November 2024, the security situation in the area has led to the blockage of land routes, resulting in limited vehicle movement and shortages of essential goods, including food and petroleum products.
Local residents report that petrol pump owners are charging arbitrary prices for petrol, and drivers are restricted to purchasing no more than 5 to 10 litres at a time.
According to Syed Ikhlaq Hussain, Chairman of the Upper Kurram Qabad Shah Khel, "Two days ago, the price of petrol was Rs1000 per litre, but as of last night, the price has increased to Rs1200 per litre."
He further noted that while petrol is available in small quantities, diesel is completely unavailable in the market. Local dealer Nawab Ali explained that since November, oil tankers have not been supplying fuel to the area due to the deteriorating security situation.
"After the breakdown of law and order, road access was restricted, but following negotiations with the jirga (tribal council), some vehicles have started arriving in convoys," he said. However, Ali added that while food supplies are arriving, oil tankers have not been allowed to enter the region.
Ali also claimed that heavy bribes are being demanded at the Taal checkpoint, causing significant financial losses to the drivers. "There is a shortage of petrol for vehicles leaving Kurram, leading to overcrowding at petrol stations," he said.
Gul Nawaz Afridi, President of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Petroleum Association, informed that local dealers in Kurram have a limited number of vehicles, and oil tanker owners from nearby districts are unwilling to send their trucks to Kurram.
"Due to fears of attacks on the convoys in Kurram, oil tankers are not entering the district, leading to a fuel shortage," Afridi explained. He assured that the local petroleum association officials are in contact, and the fuel issue will be resolved soon.
In response, district administration officials stated that efforts are underway to address the petrol shortage. Discussions have been held with oil tanker dealers and petrol pump owners, and security arrangements will be made to ensure oil tankers reach Parachinar, the main city of Kurram.
It is pertinent to note that in November 2024, a gun attack on a convoy travelling from Kurram to Peshawar led to a tribal conflict, severing Kurram's links with other districts.

Assembly debate on security turns ugly
The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly session convened on Monday to discuss the province's deteriorating law and order situation quickly descended into a heated exchange of accusations between the treasury and opposition benches, derailing any possibility of consensus on forming a parliamentary committee for peace. Lawmakers from both sides traded allegations, accusing one another of being "products of the establishment" and dredging up decades-old political history. Calls for constructive debate were repeatedly overshadowed by personal attacks and partisan jibes. During the discussion, Pakistan Peoples Party parliamentary leader Ahmad Karim Kundi criticised the government's handling of security, saying 'crocodile tears' would not resolve the crisis. He referenced statements by caretaker federal interior minister Mohsin Naqvi, who had accused the K-P chief minister of paying extortion money. "If the chief minister himself admits paying extortion, what can an ordinary citizen expect?" Kundi asked, demanding a parliamentary peace committee headed by the opposition leader. Kundi alleged that billions allocated under the NFC Award for counterterrorism had not been properly utilised, and accused the provincial leadership of privately courting the establishment while publicly claiming defiance. He further said those who once staged a 126-day sit-in on the orders of a military general were now criticising security institutions. Provincial Minister Dr Amjad Khan hit back, dismissing Naqvi as "unelected" and unqualified to comment on the chief minister. He questioned why the PPP government had failed to arrest Benazir Bhutto's killers and accused past governments of introducing terrorism to the region through drone strikes and militant patronage. PTI lawmaker Major (retd) Sajjad Khan said opposition parties had "nothing but lies and criticism," claiming PTI was the only party with representation nationwide. He accused federal coalition partners of supporting military operations in K-P, while fleeing from the provincial government's proposed All Parties Conference because they could not endorse PTI's stance. In a fiery speech, he also targeted K-P Governor, accusing him of spending his life "loitering in Islamabad's streets" and failing to perform gubernatorial duties. Speaker Babar Saleem Swati refused to expunge un-parliamentary remarks, saying live broadcasts should hold members accountable for their words. Earlier, MPA Dawood Shah Afridi lamented the province's worsening security since the PTI government's ouster, claiming the region had become peaceful under Imran Khan's tenure when drone strikes ceased. He alleged K-P and Balochistan faced oppression because of their mineral resources and power generation capacity. Lawmakers Yamin Khan and Malik Adeel opposed any new military operation in K-P, warning that pitting the army against the people would not bring peace. They linked unchecked corruption with the rise in terrorism and accused the opposition of seeking privileges rather than genuine reform.

Prices of essential food items soar
PESHAWAR: Prices of essential food commodities, including vegetables, live chicken/meat, flour, pulses, cooking oil/ghee and others soar, said in a weekly-market survey conducted by Business Recorder here on Sunday. A noticeable increase in prices of most consumer items was witnessed, the survey said. The price of live chicken has increased from Rs410 to Rs430 per kg in the retail market, while the price of farm eggs also remained high, being sold at Rs360 per dozen, the survey said. Butchers were openly defying the official price-list and imposed artificial rates and authorities concerned kept a complete mum in this regard. Cow meat without bone was available at Rs1100 and cow meat with bone is being sold at Rs1000 per kilogramme. Mutton beef was being sold from Rs2500 to Rs3000/kg in the open market, the survey added. The survey noted the price of sugar remained unchanged as it was available at Rs200/kg in the open market. The price of cooking oil/ghee of various brands and quality remain stable. Tomato is being sold at Rs100 per kilogram in the open market whereas onion was being sold at Rs70-80/kg in the previous week. Ginger and garlic remained unchanged as being available at Rs600/kg and Rs200 and Rs300/kg respectively. Green chilli was being sold at Rs120/kg. Lemon is being sold at Rs400 per kilogram in the retail market, the survey said. Peas was being sold at Rs200-250 per kg against the price of Rs150/kg, capsicum at Rs100/kilo, ladyfinger Rs200/ kilo, Arvi Rs150-200/ kilo, turnip at Rs200/kg Eggplant (bringle) Rs100/ kilo, Zucchini (tori) Rs100-120/ kilo, Tinda Rs100/kg, cabbage at Rs100/kg, red-coloured potatoes available at Rs70/ kg while white-coloured potatoes are sold at Rs50/ kg in the retail market, the survey said. Price of flour was stable in the retail market as 20-kg fine flour sac was being sold at Rs1750-Rs1600/sac and brown-coloured flour sac at Rs1400/sac in the open market. Wheat flour and other products like maida, soji and choker flour also remained high in the retail market. According to the survey, prices of all brands and qualities of beverages also remained high in the local market. Black tea was being sold at Rs1400-1500/ kg. A mixed trend was also witnessed in prices of pulses, according to the survey. The survey said good quality rice (sela) was available at Rs360kg, while low quality rice was available at Rs300-320/kg, while tota rice was available at Rs200-220/kg. Dal mash was available at Rs480, dal masoor at Rs320 per kilo, dal chilka (black) at Rs320/kg, dal chilka (green) at Rs260/kg, moong at Rs400/kg, dhoti dal at Rs400/kg, dal Channa at Rs450/kg, red bean at Rs440 per kg, Gram flour (baisen) at Rs420/kg against Rs280/kg, big-size white Channa at Rs380/kg, small-size white Channa from Rs360/kg. Apple was available from Rs250-300 and Rs400-500/kg, banana at Rs150 and 200/dozen, mango at Rs200-250 and Rs300, plum at Rs150 and Rs200/kg, apricot at Rs300-350 and Rs400 per kg, leechi at Rs500/kg, black jamun at Rs500 and Rs600/ kg, melon at Rs100-150/kg, watermelon at Rs80/per kg. Muqam sees chance for K-P power shift
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs, Engineer Amir Muqam, has said that a change of government in K-P cannot be ruled out. He asserted that the opposition would prove its majority at the appropriate time. "A strong opposition alliance with 53 MPAs has the potential to shift the balance of power in the province," he said. He was speaking during a condolence visit to the residence of PML-N K-P Additional General Secretary Haji Dildar Khan in Swabi, following the death of his brother. Amir Muqam criticized Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), stating that the party does not appear willing to engage in meaningful dialogue, unlike PML-N, which is open to negotiations with all opposition parties. He urged Imran Khan to face the cases against him in court, adding, "PML-N has nothing to do with the verdicts in the May 9 cases." Referring to PTI's protest on Kashmir Exploitation Day, Muqam said the move was inappropriate and disrespectful. "The nation has already rejected them. Calling for protests on August 14, Independence Day, is an act of hostility against the country," he remarked. He alleged that PTI's available leadership is attempting to create chaos on Independence Day to please India and Israel. "The federal government, under PML-N, will celebrate Independence Day with full dignity and express solidarity with the armed forces," he said. He further stated that the people of Pakistan have always voted for PML-N because of its patriotism, and expressed confidence that the party would again form a government under the green flag.
