Ben Wang Describes the 'Brutal' Audition Process for 'Karate Kid: Legends' (Exclusive)
Ben Wang Describes the 'Brutal' Audition Process for 'Karate Kid: Legends' (Exclusive) originally appeared on Parade. In November 2023, Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio appeared in a video launching a global casting call to find the next Karate Kid. Macchio, who played Daniel LaRusso in the original 1984 iteration of The Karate Kid and Chan, who plays kung fu master Mr. Han in the 2010 reboot, would be joining forces to unify the franchise with a new young lead. Only four months later in February 2024 after an intense worldwide search, Sony Pictures announced that American Born Chinese star Ben Wang had nabbed the role of Li Fong, the latest titular martial artist. While chatting with Parade, Wang describes the nearly two-month-long audition process as "brutal and terrifying." The casting journey required "like seven different tapes and meetings and meetings," according to Wang. "They were thorough because they were really specific about what they wanted, and so it's a long, hard process and there was a martial arts section. I'm really happy, and I feel lucky that what they wanted was me." After all his hard work, Wang found out he'd got the role in about as unglamorous a way as possible. "I was at my home, at my abode," he remembers. "I think i got the call when I was in the bathroom, and then I shifted it to somewhere with better lighting." 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 While Chan and Macchio were not actively involved with the scouting process, they're both thrilled that Wang ended up earning the part. "When you see the movie, it is truly the choice of one," Macchio says. "I did see the screen test, and then I watched a little bit of American Born Chinese, and you saw the pieces of his humor and likability, but more so when working with him on the set, everything really came [together]." Chan, who has been working with martial artists on screen for decades, was a bit tougher to impress. "I got the video too," he remembers. "Videos all same. You know, they spin around, they do some martial arts. Why this guy? They already choose for me. 'That's Ben Wang. He will be the karate kid.' I just wondering, 'Why him?' But my stunt team, they call me, 'Wow! The young guy is so clever. Whatever we teach him, he learned so fast.' Okay, everybody learns fast." It wasn't until Chan started working with Wang on set that he became impressed with Wang. "Not on the screen, behind the scene, I was taking a rest," Chan says, recalling the moment he warmed up to Wang. "He was on the corner, still practicing. I said, 'That young kid, good.'" Forever the jokester, Chan then adds, "When he fought with me, then 'Yeah, not as good as me, but good.'" "I'm really happy with that assessment," Wang replies laughing. Related: Of course Macchio and Chan have years of experience in the business and couldn't help but share some advice with the newcomer. "Just be yourself," Macchio remembers telling Wang. "This character, the protagonist in this universe of these Karate Kid films: it's the essence of genuine truth of character. So the more Ben that is infused in Li Fong, the more we believe him on this ride. That's how I portrayed it back in the day, and I see the same thing in him." Chan says he didn't need to give any acting advice to Wang, but "only when the action sequence coming, I maybe a little trick, little secret things I taught him." Individualized lessons from Jackie Chan is certainly what every marital artist dreams of. Chan, however, is now waiting for the favor to be returned. "He learned everything," Chan says of Wang. "You spent three months to learn everything from me. Pay me!" Iconic Action Star, 71, Makes Bold Admission About AI Stunts
Iconic Action Star, 71, Makes Bold Admission About AI Stunts originally appeared on Parade. is known for some of the most impressive stunt work in movie history. However, the legendary actor recently revealed why he wouldn't attempt the same bold moves in today's entertainment industry. Chan, 71, attended the Karate Kid: Legendspremiere in New York on May 27, where he reflected on his career— and how fortunate he feels to have started when he did. 'If I were working in this era, I don't think I'd do [stunts] myself,' he told Page Six. Why not? 'Because of AI, special effects, [and] green screens,' he explained. But technology isn't the only factor. According to Chan, studios today aren't eager for actors to do their own stunts either. 🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬 'You want to do [the stunt work], but the studio, the stunt coordinator, the director—they won't let you,' he said. 'Because if anything goes wrong and the star gets injured, it could shut down the whole shoot. It could cost a lot of money.' 'In the old days,' he added, 'I had to do it myself—and that's how I became 'Jackie Chan.' So I was lucky.' Though he's spent some time out of the spotlight, Chan is making a Hollywood comeback, reprising his role as Mr. Han in the latest Karate Kid installment. As for preparing to do his own stunts again? Chan says he doesn't need any special training. 'I don't need to anymore. I've been training every day for 64 years. I've been fighting, fighting, fighting,' he told Variety in a separate interview. While he's been acting since the 1960s, Chan's stunt work shows no signs of stopping. He reportedly performs all his own stunts in Karate Kid: Legends. 'I'm not like I was when I was 20 and could do a triple kick in the air,' he admitted. 'Now, I do one kick.' The Three People Ina Garten Calls Her ‘Dream Dinner Guests'
The Three People Ina Garten Calls Her 'Dream Dinner Guests' originally appeared on Parade. The right group of people seated at your table can make or break a dinner party, whether you're a regular old person like you and me or a TV star like Ina Garten. The Barefoot Contessa has built a career around recipes that are perfect for entertaining, so she knows a thing or two about having people over. She recently opened up about her 'dream dinner guests,' and it's an interesting mix. Garten shared her ideal guest list during the most recent "Sunday Sitdown Live" hosted by Today's Willie Geist. The session was done onstage in front of a live audience in New York City. The dynamic duo sipped cocktails and arranged a dessert platter while they answered questions from the crowd. 'Who are the three people, living or dead, you would like to have dinner with?' wondered one audience member. Garten didn't hesitate with her response. Here's what she shared. Related: For the record, Ina Garten says she has already hosted one dream dinner guest:. As Garten told Geist and the audience earlier in the interview, Taylor Swift came to Garten's East Hampton barn 10 years and the two of them made pavlova. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ina Garten (@inagarten) But three people still remain on Garten's dream dinner guest list. In answer to Geist's question, Ina responded: 'How about Julia Child, Eric Ripert from Le Bernardin, and Jacques Pépin?' In case you're not familiar with Garten's guest list, just know they're not your average Joes. Julia Child is a legendary American chef, TV personality and cookbook author who is known for introducing French cuisine to the American public. (And not to make it all about us, but Julia Child was Parade's very first food editor.) Related: 😋😋 SIGN UP to get delicious recipes, handy kitchen hacks & more in our daily Pop Kitchen newsletter. 🍳🍔 Eric Ripertis a French chef and cookbook author who is the executive chef and co-owner of New York City's famed Le Bernardin restaurant, where he and his team turn out exquisite seafood dishes. Jacques Pépin is a celebrated French chef and author, TV star and the winner of many awards, including several James Beard Awards. He's another food personality who is loved around these parts. (You have to try his French toast, scrambled eggs and quiche recipes.) For his dream dinner guests, Geist listed off Dolly Parton, Martin Short and Geist's great-great grandfather, who played in the National Hockey League. If Geist and Garten brought their dream guests together, it would be one epic dinner party. Related: During the conversation with Geist, Garten also shared her advice on things to avoid at a dinner party. 'There are two things that I don't think you should ever bring to a dinner party—and they're so common—is something that the host feels like they should serve," she said, calling out Jell-O salad. "What are you going to do with that?" she adds. Garten also recommends against bringing loose flowers. 'Don't ever bring flowers that aren't in a vase,' she said. 'You're there. You're like, everyone's arriving, and then all of a sudden you've got these flowers and you have to figure out what to do."The Three People Ina Garten Calls Her 'Dream Dinner Guests' first appeared on Parade on Jun 2, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 2, 2025, where it first appeared.
