'On our day we can beat any team in the world'

BBC News14-03-2025

Magpies captain Bruno Guimaraes has told BBC Radio Newcastle's Simon Pryde that Sunday's Carabao Cup final against Liverpool is his "best opportunity" to win silverware since arriving at the club in January 2022."I feel very excited for the game," he said. "Everyone in the city is very excited."There is big potential. We cannot wait for the day - to get there to Wembley and hopefully we can make history and fulfil our dream."We can see the flags in the city. It's the most important game in the past 30, 40 years so it is a big opportunity. We are not seeing this as pressure, we are seeing this as a privilege. We are hopeful to put our names and the club in history."We think we deserve that. We work hard every day and in this squad everyone likes each other and wants to be together. This counts for a lot."We know if we do this it's going to be massive for the city, for the project, for everyone. The most difficult step is obviously the first step, so we want to do this for everyone."Since I signed, I said I want to win something for the club and be part of the history. I take this one as my best opportunity. I cannot see another opportunity better than this one."It will be a very difficult game but we are on it, we are confident, we have a great squad and on our day we can beat any team in the world. We are very positive."Listen to the full chat on BBC Sounds

Meaning behind Trent Alexander-Arnold's new shirt number at Real Madrid claimed to have been discovered by fans

Football fans have claimed to have uncovered the hidden meaning behind Trent Alexander-Arnold 's new shirt number at Real Madrid. The England full-back was unveiled at the Spanish giants on Thursday after joining Los Blancos early in time for the Club World Cup. His former club Liverpool were previously adamant that he would not be able to join Real until after his contract expired with the Reds on June 30. As a result, the LaLiga side agreed to pay £10million to the Merseysiders in order to secure the services of Alexander-Arnold ahead of schedule. But as the 26-year-old right-back was completing his medical in the Spanish capital, fans were convinced they had found out the reason why he opted for the number 12 shirt for his new club. They took to social media to pen their theories, after noticing an eerie similarity between his old and new numbers. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one user wrote: '6+6=12 .. I am a scholar.' A second added: '6+6 = 12......I see it...' A further comment read: 'Ahh, 6+6 = 12, now I got why 12!!!' Alexander-Arnold has been required to select a new number as LaLiga rules only permit players to wear those between one and 25. He has also chosen to undergo a name change as he embarks on a new chapter in his career - that will see him revert from 'Alexander-Arnold' to 'Trent'. Following Alexander-Arnold's presentation to fans, the Madrid squad will fly to the United States for the Club World Cup - which gets underway on June 14 - as they face RB Salzburg, Pachuca and Al Hilal. Along with being forced to sacrifice his old shirt number, Alexander-Arnold was also forbidden from taking another prized personal item to Spain. He was unable to ship his £130,000 Range Rover as Madrid have a sponsorship agreement with BMW, which prevents players driving any other cars to the club's training ground, according to El Motor. The car manufacturer provides Real Madrid players with cars to use throughout the season, meaning they will hook up Alexander-Arnold with a new drive.

That interest could fade if Newcastle refuse to budge from their £150m asking price, but Liverpool have alternative targets. One of those is Paris Saint-Germain forward Bradley Barcola, who has also attracted interest from Bayern Munich. Arne Slot could complete his summer splurge by bringing in Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez. Here are the ways Liverpool could line up in the Premier League next season. Option one 8 Slot's dream line-up would be the inclusion of two new full-backs to freshen up the defence. Frimpong and Kerkez would also add plenty going forward, supporting the likes of Barcola and Mo Salah in attack. That would likely rule out a move for Barcola, meaning Wirtz or Luis Diaz could line up at left wing. It could also mean Slot decides to continue with the midfield three that served his team so well next season, allowing the attack the freedom to score and produce goals. Option three 8 Frimpong's arrival gives Slot multiple options on the right flank thanks to his flexibility. He operated mostly as a right wing-back at Bayer Leverkusen, contributing 30 goals and 44 assists in 190 appearances. That attacking quality could see him play further forward at Anfield if Slot fancies giving Conor Bradley more game time. Frimpong at right wing could also reduce Salah's workload, with the Egyptian operating through the middle instead. Option four 8 There could be more opportunities for fringe players to stake their claim next season. Caoimhin Kelleher's exit to Brentford means Giorgi Mamardashvili is now Liverpool's No2. The Georgian signed last summer but spent the 2024-25 campaign on loan at Valencia, impressing between the sticks. Joe Gomez could also be in line for more minutes next season but he would have to find consistency in his fitness - something which has deserted him throughout his Anfield stay. Option five 8 Jarell Quansah will also be hoping to build on his breakthrough season, which was rather stunted by the fact he started just four Prem matches last season. No Isak could mean Diogo Jota continues in attack, fitness permitting, with Barcola perhaps the only addition to the front three.
