
Mumtaz breaks down as she remembers Shammi Kapoor's last days: ‘He said he doesn't have long to live and…'
Mumtaz, who was once considered as the B-Grade heroine, went on to became the most wanted star when she starred alongside Dilip Kumar in his film Ram Aur Shyam (1967). As her stardom grew, the same heroes who once rejected to work with her, started to find her pretty, expressing their desire to work with her. This also sparked several rumours of the actress' romantic relationships with her co-stars. The most famous of them all is her relationship with actor Shammi Kapoor.
In a recent interview with Radio Nasha, the veteran star has opened up about all her life secrets, rumours and relationships. In a promo shared, the actress can be seen talking about her bonding with actor Dev Anand, the time when Jeetendra refused to work with her as well as her love affair with Shammi Kapoor. The actress can be heard saying, 'Jeetu I am sorry, but this is what you said, 'Jeetu said, ap Mumtaz ko kyu le rahe ho?' The sentence was then followed by 'Nobody wanted to work with me.
Mumtaz spoke about her Tere Mere Sapne (1971) co-star Dev Anand. The actress said, 'All my heroes used to love me.' She recalled, 'Dev Anand used to call me Mumzi… often there used to be reports of my romantic link ups with my co-stars because they all loved me.'
A segment of the trailer also showed her opening up about her relationship with Shammi Kapoor. In the video, the actress could be heard saying, 'Shammi Kapoor was so good looking that no girl could resist crushing over him. Wasn't he the most good looking man?' When the interviewer asked, 'Apko pyaar kaise hua? (How did you fall in love?)' The actress humorously replied, 'Aapne bhi toh pyaar kiya hoga, apko kaise hua? (You too must have fallen in love… how did you do?)' When he said, 'I proposed,' Mumtaz immediately replied, 'He also proposed to me.'
In the promo, she also recalled her last meeting with Shammi Kapoor. She cried as she said, 'When I saw him sitting on a chair, and he was still drinking… from far away, I asked him, 'Why are you drinking when you are not well?' And that is the time I came to know that he said he won't live for long. Then I said, 'You can drink, enjoy yourself.' After knowing the reality, I couldn't tell him 'You can't do this or that'. He wanted to be happy. I just told him, 'Please take care of yourself'. I sat with him for sometime and I came back home. I couldn't see him dying.'

Shammi Kapoor proposed to Mumtaz when she was 17. 'He wanted me to give up my career when I was just 17. I don't think anyone can give me the same amount of love that he showered on me. I never forgot him. Even today when his name is mentioned, tears well up in my eyes. It was not a love affair, it was much more. We loved each other deeply', Mumtaz told Rediff.com.
