National Women Commission member Mamta Kumari launches first ‘Tere, Mere Sapne' centre to strengthen families and empower youth for marriage
1 2 Ludhiana: In a move aimed at strengthening the institution of marriage and restoring family values, National Commission for Women (NCW) member Mamta Kumari on Sunday inaugurated Punjab's first 'Tere Mere Sapne' centre in the Civil Lines locality of Ludhiana. The initiative, according to an official statement, seeks to "foster stronger family connections and empower youth for successful marriages" through structured counselling. A second centre will be launched on Monday within the district court complex to further expand the programme's reach. The inauguration was attended by NCW official Sangeeta Kulshrestha, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Jasleen Kumar Bhullar, District Child Protection Officer Rashmi Saini, Child Development Project Officers Ravinder Kaur and Davinder Kaur, among others. Kumari explained that the centres will offer expert guidance to young people preparing for marriage, focusing on emotional intelligence, mutual respect, social dynamics and conflict resolution. "These centres promote emotional closeness and effective approaches to resolving marital challenges," she said, describing the effort as essential to building a more cohesive society. Earlier in the day, Kumari visited the Red Cross Senior Citizens Home and Shree Swami Vivekananda Trust to review the facilities provided to elderly residents. Commenting on the broader impact of the initiative, Kumari said: "In today's fast-moving world, family values are often overlooked. The 'Tere Mere Sapne' centres will provide young people with the emotional wisdom to build meaningful relationships and stronger families." She added that professional support will also be offered to help individuals navigate the complexities of modern partnerships. The programme marks a significant step in NCW's ongoing push to address issues of family breakdown and youth disorientation through early, structured intervention. Tere Mere Sapne: Amid Murders By Spouses, NCW Starts Pre-Marital Counselling In 10 States
Last Updated: The NCW launched "Tere Mere Sapne", a pre-marital counselling programme in 24 cities across 10 states, starting in Indore, to bridge emotional gaps and prevent marital crimes In a first-of-its-kind move, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has launched an ambitious initiative titled 'Tere Mere Sapne", a pre-marital dialogue and counselling programme aimed at bridging the growing emotional and psychological gaps between newlyweds. Set to be rolled out in 24 major cities across 10 states, the initiative will begin from Indore, where the shocking murder case of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi recently made headlines. The idea is both urgent and unprecedented: to ensure that couples speak, understand, and truly get to know each other before tying the knot. The dialogue centres, as envisioned by the NCW, will offer psychological counselling, social support, and emotional readiness sessions for individuals planning to marry. The mantra driving the initiative is clear – 'First dialogue, then marriage". At the heart of this intervention lies the alarming increase in marital crimes, particularly those where a spouse is murdered within days or weeks of marriage, and often, by the other partner. The NCW believes that many such tragedies could be prevented if young couples were given time, tools, and space to understand each other before making a lifelong commitment. The programme isn't just a reaction to statistics, it's a response to horrifying headlines. Just weeks ago, the country was left stunned by the gruesome murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, allegedly killed by his wife Sonam only 12 days after their wedding. Police investigations revealed a larger conspiracy involving others as well, making the case all the more chilling. Prior to the Raghuvanshi case came another gruesome story from Meerut, where a woman named Muskan reportedly murdered her husband and buried his body inside a blue-coloured plastic drum. These are not isolated incidents. Across India, reports are piling up of young men being killed shortly after marriage, and disturbingly often, it is the wives who are found complicit. Experts attribute this unsettling trend to the collapse of trust in relationships, lack of communication, and emotional incompatibility, issues that 'Tere Mere Sapne" directly aims to address. By opening these dialogue centres, the Women's Commission hopes to create a space for couples to ask difficult questions, confront uncertainties, and truly reflect before walking into marriage. It's not a deterrent to marriage, it's a shield against tragedy. With Indore set to lead the way, the NCW's initiative is already being seen as a significant, proactive step in reshaping how the society approaches marriage.

In the glamorous world of Bollywood, many actors come to Mumbai with a suitcase full of dreams to make it big on the silver screen, but there are rarely a few who manage to earn that fame and leave an impact. However, there was one such actress who captivated the hearts of millions as soon as she entered the industry. From her natural innocence to her strong performance, she soon rose to fame and left a remarkable mark on the audience, even with her career that was short-lived. I've always liked Shah Rukh. When I was studying, I used to watch him on television. He used to come in the serials, and then he became a huge star. But you know, you never think that one day you're going to be with this guy. And I was totally in awe of him.' Priya had a short film career trajectory, but despite that, she captured the hearts of many. Stepping away from the limelight, Priya said she is now living a peaceful life with her family in Denmark.

Mumtaz Recalls Emotional Final Meeting With Shammi Kapoor: ‘He Said He Won't Live Long'
Last Updated: Veteran actress Mumtaz opened up about her love story with Shammi Kapoor and the heartbreak of witnessing his decline. Once labelled a B-grade heroine, Mumtaz rose like a phoenix in the glitzy world of Hindi cinema. Her big break opposite Dilip Kumar in Ram Aur Shyam (1967) flipped the script of her career entirely, transforming her from an overlooked name to one of the most sought-after stars in the industry. Ironically, the same heroes who once refused to work with her suddenly found her captivating — both on and off screen. This meteoric rise also brought with it a fair share of rumours, particularly surrounding her relationships with co-stars. The most talked-about among them was her romance with the ever-charming Shammi Kapoor. In a recent candid conversation on Radio Nasha, Mumtaz bared her heart, revisiting old memories, relationships, and the raw emotions behind her glamorous façade. In the teaser clip, she recalled how actor Jeetendra once dismissed the idea of working with her. 'Jeetu, I'm sorry, but this is what you said — 'Jeetu said, ap Mumtaz ko kyu le rahe ho?'" she shared with a hint of mischief and melancholy. 'Nobody wanted to work with me," she added, pulling back the curtain on the industry's early rejection of her. Speaking about her equation with her Tere Mere Sapne (1971) co-star Dev Anand, she said affectionately, 'Dev Anand used to call me Mumzi… all my heroes used to love me." Mumtaz, never one to shy away from her truth, acknowledged the buzz around her name. 'Often there used to be reports of my romantic link-ups with co-stars because they all loved me." But it was her enduring bond with Shammi Kapoor that continues to tug at heartstrings. 'Shammi Kapoor was so good-looking that no girl could resist crushing over him," she said. When asked how their love story began, Mumtaz quipped with a smile, 'Aapne bhi toh pyaar kiya hoga, aapko kaise hua?" To which she added, 'He also proposed to me." Their romance was tender yet complicated. Shammi wanted Mumtaz to give up her career at just 17, something she wasn't ready for. 'I don't think anyone can give me the same amount of love that he showered on me. I never forgot him," she had told 'Even today, when his name is mentioned, tears well up in my eyes. It was not a love affair; it was much more. We loved each other deeply." Recalling their final meeting, she shared, voice cracking with emotion, 'He was still drinking… I asked him, 'Why are you drinking when you are not well?' He said he wouldn't live for long. And I told him, 'Then drink, enjoy yourself.' What else could I say? I couldn't stop him. I sat with him a while and came back. I couldn't see him dying." Ending her reflection with a poignant shayari that encapsulates the ache of parting, Mumtaz said: 'Hum bhi toh dekhe zamane ki yaari, bichhade sabhi baari baari…" First Published: May 23, 2025, 19:36 IST
