Zimbabwe starts paying for farms it seized to meet compensation deal
Initial disbursements were made to Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland and the former Yugoslavia last month for 94 farms that were taken, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube said. Fifty-six farmers from those countries, which had bilateral investment-protection agreements with Zimbabwe, were also paid.
'Payments are being made to the claimant's bank accounts of choice,' Ncube said in a statement on Friday. The payments are 'a critical step' toward Zimbabwe revamping its debt, he added.
The southern African nation has been locked out of international capital markets since 1999 after it defaulted on debt from lenders including the World Bank, Paris Club and African Development Bank.
The Treasury is using $20 million set aside in last year's budget to make the initial payments, and will make multi-year fiscal allocations until 2028 to pay off the remaining $125 million that is owed, the finance minister said.
Harare-based ambassadors from Germany, Netherlands and Switzerland welcomed the move, saying 'several affected investors have received initial payouts,' according to the statement. 'An emerging sense of closure exits.'
An International Monetary Fund team is in the country to determine whether to place Zimbabwe on a so-called 'staff-monitored program,' that would also be pivotal to securing a debt overhaul.

Hundreds look for jobs at career fair in Dubai
More than 400 candidates wishing to seek new jobs or exploring better employment opportunities participated in the first phase of the career fair organised by the Pakistan Consulate in Dubai. The first phase of the 2-day Career Fair 2025 was organised in collaboration with Transguard Group. The officials conducted the initial interviews of job seekers who visited the consulate from across the UAE. More than 20 job categories were offered by Transguard Group, providing an opportunity for employment in diverse sectors. About 400 candidates participated in the initial phase of the recruitment drive. The final selection of candidates will be announced upon the completion of assessment and verification processes in accordance with the specific requirements of each role. Hussain Muhammad, Consul General of Pakistan in Dubai, visited the venue and observed the recruitment process. He emphasised the importance of such initiatives in employment opportunities for Pakistanis residing in the UAE. He lauded the collaboration as an important step towards generating job opportunities for the Pakistani community. 'The Consulate remains committed to supporting and facilitating such partnerships to further broaden the scope of employment opportunities for our community,' he said. Community Welfare Attachés Imran Shahid and Junaid Murtaza also expressed their satisfaction with the response and affirmed that plans are underway to organise recruitment drives in collaboration with leading UAE-based employment agencies. The second phase of Career Fair 2025 is scheduled to take place on June 18 and 19 at the Consulate premises.

Rwanda quits Central African bloc in dispute with Congo
Rwanda has said it would withdraw from the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), underscoring diplomatic tensions in the region over an offensive this year by Rwanda-backed M23 rebels in eastern Congo. Kigali had expected to assume the chairmanship of the 11-member bloc at a meeting on Saturday in Equatorial Guinea. Instead, the bloc kept Equatorial Guinea in the role, which Rwanda's foreign ministry denounced as a violation of its rights. Rwanda, in a statement, condemned Congo's "instrumentalization" of the bloc and saw "no justification for remaining in an organization whose current functioning runs counter to its founding principles." It wasn't clear if Rwanda's exit from the bloc would take immediate effect. The office of Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi said in a statement that ECCAS members had "acknowledged the aggression against the Democratic Republic of Congo by Rwanda and ordered the aggressor country to withdraw its troops from Congolese soil." M23 seized eastern Congo's two largest cities earlier this year, with the advance leaving thousands dead and raising concerns of an all-out regional war. African leaders along with Washington and Doha have been trying to broker a peace deal. Congo, the UN and Western powers accuse Rwanda of supporting M23 by sending troops and weapons. Rwanda has long denied helping M23, saying its forces were acting in self-defence against Congo's army and ethnic Hutu militiamen linked to the 1994 Rwandan genocide that killed around 1 million people, mostly ethnic Tutsis. US President Donald Trump's administration hopes to strike a peace accord between Congo and Rwanda that would also facilitate billions in Western investment in the region, which is rich in minerals including tantalum, gold, cobalt, copper and lithium. ECCAS was established in the 1980s to foster cooperation in areas like security and economic affairs among its member states.
