Woman falls into Narhe stormwater channel, found dead in Warje nullah
Pune: Efforts of three passersby to rescue a woman who fell into a stormwater channel failed as she was swept away by water in an overflowing nullah near Navale Bridge in the Narhe area during the heavy rain on Thursday night.
After failing in their effort, one of them alerted the police control room about the accident. A fire brigade team found the body of the woman, Shobha Mahimane (64), on Friday following an over 15-hour search.
Pradip Khedekar, an official of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)'s fire brigade involved in the search, told TOI: "Her body was found near the Warje crematorium, where the nullah merges with the river, almost 4-5km from the accident spot.
Earlier in the day, we had found her footwear and clothes."
Rahul Khilare, inspector (Crime) at the Bharti Vidyapeeth police station, told TOI that the woman had arrived from Kolhapur with some relatives in a car after attending a wedding. She was dropped by the relatives at Narhe. They had told her to stay overnight in another relative's house in Katraj, instead of travelling all the way to Phursungi because of heavy rain.

He said, "She was trying to cross the highway and reach the service road to find an autorickshaw when the accident occurred.
"
Khilare said the police found her cellphone found near the stormwater channel. "We got her daughter's number from the phone. We called her daughter, informed her about the incident and ascertained the identity of the deceased."
A senior police officer said they have written to the National Highways Authority of India and PMC to cover the stormwater channels, which are almost 2-3ft deep, install signboards along the highway to ensure that commuters and pedestrians are alert, particularly when they are overflowing.

Gunmen kill at least 100 in north-central Nigeria village attack, says Amnesty
At least 100 people were killed in a brutal overnight attack by gunmen in Nigeria's north-central Benue state, Amnesty International Nigeria said Saturday. The massacre occurred between late Friday and the early hours of Saturday in the village of Yelewata, located in the Guma region of the state. The rights group, in a Facebook post, described the attack as one of the deadliest in recent months, saying "many families were locked up and burnt inside their bedrooms. So many bodies were burnt beyond recognition." Amnesty also reported that dozens of people remain missing, and hundreds have been left wounded, many without access to medical care. Shocking images and videos circulating on social media showed charred buildings, scorched bodies, and widespread destruction in the community. Udeme Edet, spokesperson for the Benue state police, confirmed that an attack had occurred in Yelewata but did not provide casualty figures. 'We are still assessing the situation on ground,' Edet said. Authorities have not identified those responsible for the killings. However, violence between herders and farmers is a persistent issue in Nigeria's Middle Belt region, often leading to deadly confrontations over land and water rights. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Such attacks are frequently blamed on Fulani herders, who graze cattle across traditional farming areas. Local farmers accuse them of destroying crops and forcibly occupying farmlands, while herders argue they are following legally designated grazing routes established under a 1965 law. The region has witnessed similar bloodshed in recent months. In May, at least 20 people were killed in Benue's Gwer West area in an attack suspected to have been carried out by herders. In April, at least 40 people died in violence in neighbouring Plateau state. Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has dispatched a delegation to Yelewata to support the grieving families. 'This act of terror is deeply heartbreaking. We are committed to ensuring those responsible are brought to justice,' a spokesperson from the governor's office said. Benue, often referred to as the 'food basket of the nation,' has been a flashpoint for herder-farmer clashes in recent years, contributing to a broader insecurity crisis that has gripped Nigeria's northern and central states.

200 smart AI powered cameras start to detect traffic violations
Mangaluru: Nearly 200 smart cameras installed on Mangaluru city roads by the Mangaluru Smart City Limited (MSCL) have started capturing images of traffic violators. Once implemented fully, the intelligent traffic management system will send auto-generated traffic slips to the mobile phones of vehicle owners. Mangaluru City traffic police have already commenced the trial run, and violators have been receiving alert messages on their phones. However, the system will be officially launched in July, and thereafter, violators will have to pay penalties as per the Motor Vehicles Rules. The high-resolution cameras installed at prominent locations in the city started detecting various violations, including two-wheeler riding without a helmet, car driving without a seat belt, wrong-side driving, and signal jumping. The MSCL installed nearly 200 artificial intelligence cameras at various locations on the main roads of the city. High-resolution cameras equipped with AI tools are monitoring traffic flow and effectively detecting violations. The cameras provide real-time visuals, while the AI tools analyse the captured footage to identify and track traffic offences. DCP (crime & traffic) K Ravi Shankar told TOI that the entire system is under a trial run and it will be made fully functional from July 1. "Those who violate traffic rules will receive messages on their mobile phones during the trial run. However, we are not framing charges based on the camera inputs for the time being. We are planning to launch the system from next month with the help of the National Informatics Centre (NIC). All cameras are linked to the NIC. After completing all necessary procedures, the system will be in place to check traffic violations in the city. In the next 10 days, we will be able to rectify all technical issues," he said. Smart cameras have been installed on MG Road, Bendoorwell, Mangaladevi, Pandeshwar, Mallikatta, Bejai, and several other locations. Case against 4 betting sites as student loses 50L, pal ends life
Hyderabad: Cyberabad police have registered a case against four online betting portals and six other individuals accused of defrauding a 27-year-old student of 50 lakh and allegedly driving another man to suicide. On Friday night, a student from Miyapur filed a complaint detailing how Instagram reels led him to a Telegram channel in December 2023, while he was pursuing a management degree in Italy. The channel, operated by a fraudster claiming to be from Jagtial, promised 'guaranteed toss-fix' predictions for cricket matches and displayed fabricated screenshots of significant winnings. After receiving two initially correct tips, the complainant and his friend, a native of Bhopal, began wagering substantial sums through various betting websites promoted by the fraudsters in 2024. "He promised fixed match outcomes, showed fake screenshots of winnings, and encouraged us to place bets through offshore betting websites. Initially, he gave two correct predictions, likely staged to gain our trust. Encouraged by this and reassured by his repeated promises, we began placing bets via money transfers. All subsequent predictions turned out to be false. I personally lost around 50 lakh, while my friend from Bhopal, who placed even larger bets on credit, lost about 60 lakh," the complainant alleged. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo According to police, the fraudsters operated multiple invitation-only Telegram groups to conceal their identities and promote illegal betting, posing a threat to public order by staying ahead of enforcement measures. "Tragically, due to the psychological pressure caused by the fraudsters' repeated false assurances, my friend ended his life on December 6, 2024. The network is a serious threat to public order, promoting illicit betting sites and using mule accounts to launder money," said the complainant, who is now back in Hyderabad. Following the complaint, Cyberabad cyber crime police registered a case under Sections 316(5) (criminal breach of trust by a public servant, banker, merchant or agent), 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Section 3(1)(i) of the Telangana Gaming Act, and Section 66-D of the IT Act against four betting websites and six fraudsters promoting them through social media groups. Police are currently analysing evidence provided by the complainant, including chat logs and transaction records, to zero in on the offenders.
