The Karnataka Handlooms and Textiles Department on Thursday felicitated five handloom weavers from across the State on the occasion of the seventh National Handloom Day, celebrated to commemorate the 1905 swadeshi movement. The award has been conferred in recognition of developing new styles and designs in handloom textiles using technical skills by people involved in the handloom industry. The department categorised awards under three fields, namely silk, cotton, and wool. The winners are M.V. Prakash from Tumakuru, Suresh D.S. from Chitradurga, Tejappa Chinnuru from Gadag, Lakshmana Kakkannavara from Bagalakote, and K.M. Bajjappa from Chitradurga. Mr. Chinnuru was awarded in recognition of weaving a cotton saree with the Operation Sindoor design on it. In Karnataka, there are 54,791 handloom weavers who use 29,377 handloom instruments. The weavers in the State produce cotton wear, silk sarees, Ilkal sarees, lungis, towels, bedsheets, and others. The department said that they had spent ₹10 crore towards the weavers' package and ₹60 crore towards the weavers' samman scheme during the financial year 2024-25. The same amount has been allotted for the year 2025-26 as well. Surat aiport notified as being operational 24x7
Surat: Air connectivity in South Gujarat is set to improve as Surat airport has officially been declared operational round-the-clock (24x7) on a permanent basis, with effect from 5.35pm on Saturday. This came through a notice to airmen (NOTAM A1259/25) issued by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and updates made to the national aeronautical database to reflect the change. While Surat airport was granted 24-hour status in 2018, it was not functioning full time due to a shortage of air traffic controllers and other critical support staff. A breakthrough came on Jan 10, 2023, when AAI member (operations), M Suresh, issued an internal office note proposing the declaration of five airports — Agartala, Imphal, Madurai, Bhopal and Surat — as 24-hour operational airports from April 1, 2023. The formal step toward implementation was taken earlier this year during Operation Sindoor, when the strategic relevance of Surat's location on the western coast was highlighted for military preparedness. A temporary NOTAM was issued on May 7, 2025, making Surat airport function 24x7 for 90 days, from May 9 to Aug 9, to support emergency landings of Indian Air Force and Navy aircraft. After the successful trial period and its critical role during Operation Sindoor, 24-hour operations have now been made permanent. This is a major milestone for the airport and a long-pending demand of the city's business community. With the new status, Surat can now attract late-night and early morning flights to major metro cities, improving connectivity and boosting the region's economic potential. Surat airport currently has 18 parking bays, which can now be used for night parking. This is expected to generate additional revenue and bring more airlines to Surat. Surat airport director A N Sharma confirmed the decision to make Surat airport 24x7 permanently. "We ran the airport 24x7 over the past 90 days. Now, with the decision to make it 24-hour permanently, we welcome all airlines to come to Surat." An official said: "ATC manpower, runway lighting systems and terminal readiness are being streamlined to match the upgraded operational profile." An aviation enthusiast, Rajesh Modi, said: "This announcement is a big step in enhancing flight movements at Surat airport, with early morning flights to the current Mumbai airport and the new airport at Mumbai being possible, which will open a new gateway to the world." Pakistani Diplomat-in-chief on Mission US for 2nd time in under two months
The Pakistan-US bonhomie will get further momentum when Field Marshal Asim Munir visits the US to attend the CENTCOM change in command this month. This will be Munir's second trip to Washington in less than two months. He will attend the farewell ceremony of US Central Command (CENTCOM) commander General Michael E Kurilla . ET has learnt Kurilla shares strong chemistry with Munir and the Pakistan military . Kurilla was recently given one of Pakistan's highest civilian awards and had termed Pakistan a "phenomenal partner" in counterterrorism. "Pakistan has been a phenomenal partner in the counterterrorism world... Thats why we need to have a relationship with Pakistan and with India," Kurilla said during a hearing before the house armed services committee. Pakistan has worked closely with CENTCOM for decades. On its part, CENTCOM has cultivated ties with Islamabad viewing it as an important player in South Asia much to India's discomfort, according to experts on Pakistan-US affairs. During his last visit in June, Munir met Trump over lunch at the White House, which was the first time that a sitting US president met any Pakistani army chief. This was organised weeks after the Pahalgam terror attack and India's Operation Sindoor. Pakistan has also nominated Trump for the Nobel peace prize for "brokering" peace with India. India had twice raised with the US its discomfort about the luncheon meeting between Trump and Munir. Pakistan is back in Washington's decision-making circles after years of isolation amid intense lobbying by Islamabad and Washington's eagerness to reciprocate, including through a trade deal. Critics claim Pakistan has wooed the US through crypto business whose benefits are allegedly being received by Trump's inner circle.
