Los Angeles Sparks to retire Candace Parker's No. 3 jersey in June

New York Times27-03-2025
Candace Parker's No. 3 jersey will be raised to the rafters at Crypto.com Arena. The Sparks will retire the WNBA legend's jersey on June 29 at halftime of Los Angeles' game against the Chicago Sky, the team announced Thursday.
Parker, who holds the Sparks' all-time assists record (1,331), announced her retirement from basketball last April after a prolific career in which she was named a two-time WNBA MVP and seven-time All-Star. She also won three WNBA championships, two Olympic gold medals and two NCAA championships.

She will become the third Spark to have her jersey retired, joining Lisa Leslie (No. 9) and Penny Toler (No. 11).
'To see my jersey hanging in the rafters amongst other legends is truly an honor,' Parker said in a news release. 'This moment is not just about me — it's about my family, my teammates and the incredible support from the LA Sparks organization and fans. I'm grateful to my parents, who believed in me every step of the way, to my brothers who still are my heroes and to my wife and kids, who inspire me every day.
'Holding the record for assists reminds me that basketball is never just about individual success — it's about elevating others and being a part of something bigger than yourself. This jersey represents all the moments, all the connections, and all the love that got me here.'
The No. 1 pick in the 2008 WNBA Draft, Parker spent the first 13 seasons of her 16-year tenure in the league with Los Angeles (2008-2020), where she helped the franchise win its third and most recent title in 2016 (she also won championships with the Sky and Las Vegas Aces).
Parker's daughter Lailaa was born in 2009; the Staples Center (now Crypto.com Arena) 'was her playground growing up,' Parker said in the release.
The team said Parker's jersey retirement ceremony will feature a halftime tribute with appearances from former teammates, coaches and special guests, as well as a video of Parker's highlights with the franchise.
'Candace Parker has left an indelible mark on the Los Angeles Sparks, not only as one of the greatest players to ever grace the court, but as a true ambassador of our franchise and women's basketball as a whole. Beginning with her arrival to the City of Angels in 2008, she not only lived up to the expectations placed on her as a two-time Gatorade Basketball Player of the Year and NCAA national champion, she far exceeded them,' Sparks co-owner Magic Johnson said in a statement. 'Her unparalleled skill, relentless drive and leadership elevated the Sparks to new heights and set a new standard of greatness.

'Candace is the best all-around player that has ever played in the WNBA. Her legacy is immeasurable — she redefined excellence, was a champion on the court and for the Los Angeles community and inspired countless fans and future generations of athletes. Very few champions get to see their jersey hanging from the rafters in this city. Retiring Candace's No. 3 jersey is not just a celebration of her extraordinary career, but a tribute to the enduring mark she's left on this organization, the WNBA, and the city of Los Angeles. She will forever be a part of the Sparks family.'

Cardinals' No. 1 Prospect Added to NL All-Star Futures Game Roster originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Rosters for the 2025 MLB All-Star Futures Game were revealed by the league on Monday with the NL roster featuring St. Louis Cardinals No. 1 prospect JJ Wetherholt among 16 other Top 100 prospects. St. Louis Cardinals No. 1 prospect stands with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred after being selected 7th overall in the 2024 MLB Draft. Kevin Jairaj-Imagn Images The 22-year-old shortstop will be the 27th member of the Springfield Cardinals organization to represent the team on the Futures Game roster. Advertisement Wetherholt has been putting on a masterclass on both sides of the ball at the Double-A level so far this year, racking up 62 hits and 41 walks while striking out 35 times - 7th least in the Texas League - in 57 games played. His .305 average and .430 on base percentage lead all qualified Texas League hitters by a considerable margin and his 1.171 walk to strikeout rate ranks third on the league leaderboard. With a second-best walk rate (16.3%) and third-best strikeout rate (13.9%), Wetherholt finds ways to get on base in nearly half of his at bats. On top of his stellar performance at the dish, Wetherholt has made a variety of highlight-reel plays at both shortstop and second base this season, proving that he's more than just a big bat for the Cardinals' front office to be excited for. The former seventh overall pick says that while he is focusing on polishing his hitting and defense, he is taking a focused approach to baserunning this season, which he has shown through his 13 stolen bases. Cardinals' Nolan Arenado Dethrones Athletics Denzel Clarke Per MLB Announcement

Cardinals' Nolan Arenado Dethrones Athletics Denzel Clarke Per MLB Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. For the first time in five weeks we have a new recipient of MLB's Electric Play of the Week presented by Chevrolet. Advertisement MLB announced on Monday that St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado has dethroned Athletics rookie centerfielder Denzel Clarke as this week's winner. Arenado claimed the honor for his bare-handed game-ending play against the Chicago Cubs on June 24. With two outs in the top of the ninth inning of an 8-7 game, and the game-tying run on third base, the Cubs' Danbsy Swanson hit a high chopper to third base. Arenado, a 10-time gold glove winner, charged the ball and made a barehanded play, throwing out Swanson at first base to preserve the crucial victory for the Cardinals. 'I didn't expect us to be winning like this, at this point,' Arenado told after the game. 'I expected us to play hard, I thought we were going to be good defensively and I thought our pitching would be fine. … Just seeing everyone one-through-nine contributing, I mean I like playing baseball like this … against the Cubs … where games matter. You don't want to play games just to play games. Individually, I've accomplished some things in this game and I want to accomplish something team-oriented and special and win a World Series. Games like this, it's easy to wake up for. This is the most excited [that] I've come to the ballpark for – this series – in about two years.' Advertisement Arenado's Electric Play of the Week win breaks the record streak set by Clarke, who won four weeks in a row. It's also the second win for Arenado in his career, and first by a Cardinals player since Jordan Walker took home the award on July 17, 2023. Alec Burleson's amazing diving catch against the netting in the same game also received votes.
