Special to the Miami Herald
The Miami Springs baseball team started its season in Fort Myers three months ago. And the Golden Hawks are going to finish it there as well.
Six years after making a first-ever trip to the state final four, Springs is headed back again following an impressive 5-0 shutout victory over St. Brendan in Game two of a Region 4-3A final on Wednesday afternoon at Springs' Shelly Dunkel Field.
The win finished off an outstanding three-week run by the Hawks who entered as the region's No. 1 seed and finished a perfect 6-0 on their home field. Along the way, they outscored their three opponents, iMater Academy, Monsignor Pace and St. Brendan by a composite score of 39-7.
Springs (26-3) advances to the Class 3A state semifinals for the first time since 2019 and will play on Monday, May 19 at the Lee Health Sports Complex – Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers. The Hawks will enter as the No. 3 seed and will face either Clearwater Calvary Christian or Fort Myers Bishop Verot who are playing Game 3 of their best-of-3 series in Region 3-3A on Thursday night.
If it's Bishop Verot, it would mark a rematch of the two teams who met in Fort Myers to kick off the 2025 season in a Feb. 3 preseason classic.
'Isn't it something how it all started for us in Fort Myers three months ago and now we're going to finish in Fort Myers,' Springs coach David Fanshawe said. 'Hopefully we've got two more wins in us to complete the journey.'
Fanshawe said that even though the game didn't count officially, the 8-1 victory over a Bishop Verot team that is currently 26-1 this season was a huge confidence booster for his players.
'Even though it was only a preseason game, we played really well against them that night and beat them decisively,' Fanshawe said. 'I think that our kids got a boatload of confidence from that game and as it turned out, was the launching pad to our season.'
One day after winning a 3-2 extra-inning nail-biter over St. Brendan in the first game, there would be no such drama on Wednesday thanks to a brilliant and dominating pitching performance by senior Magdiel Estevez.
With an effective slider that St. Brendan hitters simply could not figure out, Estevez was in complete command the entire time, as he struck out 10 Sabre batters, gave up just two hits, and walked just two as the Sabres (19-15) had just two runners reach second base.
The only thing keeping Estevez from a complete game shutout was pitch count. With just one batter left, he maxed out at 105 pitches forcing Fanshawe to replace him with reliever Anthony Espinoza, who recorded the final out.
'Maybe I was a little nervous inside but I managed to stay calm all game long and really got out there and found my comfort zone,' said Estevez, a Miami-Dade commit. 'I was excited for the game and the opportunity to come through for my team. I was really getting a lot of movement on my slider, filthy for sure.'
Estevez also enjoyed what all pitchers love, especially in a big game – an early lead.
The Hawks got him a single run in the first inning and then blew things open when No. 9 hitter Justin Mercado stepped up with the bases loaded in the second and ripped a line shot down the right field line to clear the bases and put the Hawks up 4-0.
Miami Springs pitcher Magdiel Estevez dominated from first pitch to last pitch as he gave up just two hits and struck out 10 to lead the Hawks to a 5-0 victory over St. Brendan in the clinching game of the Region 4-3A final series. Bill Daley

'The early runs were big,' Estevez said. 'When you get a lead that like, it gives you the confidence to make some pitches without the worry of making a mistake and giving up a long ball because you have a little wiggle room. What a cool moment this is for me. You dream about something like this as a little kid playing Little League.'
The Hawks, whose only losses this season came to COHEA, Belen Jesuit and Varela in a GMAC semifinal, then got Estevez one more run in the fourth when Yordan Torres, who delivered an RBI game-winning hit in the ninth on Tuesday, came through again with a one-out triple before scoring on a wild pitch.
'Every high school team out there sets this as a goal whey they take the practice field back in January and to realize it, to actually walk through that door to state is just so gratifying,' Springs catcher and senior captain Kelven Perera said. 'All the hard work paid off. Now, we've got some time to get ready and we want to go out there and take advantage of the opportunity in front of us and get two more wins.'

Clarendon Hills Little League team soaks in international experience at World Series

Clarendon Hills Little League Baseball catcher Hudson Lauerman called his first impression of arriving in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, for the Little League World Series 'a whole different level of coolness.' The Clarendon Hills 12 and under age group team advanced to the Aug. 13-24 tournament for the first time by winning the Great Lakes Region Aug. 6. The team arrived in Williamsport, the headquarters for Little League, the evening after claiming the Region championship. 'You see it on TV, but it really is amazing to come here and see all of this,' Hudson said Sunday. 'They give you all kinds of free stuff, mostly baseball gear. It's like a kid on Christmas experience, and it's something I'll remember forever.' Teammate Christian Gernot had a similar reaction. 'And the first time I saw the field, what we've seen before on TV, it's just amazing,' he said. Clarendon Hills manager Brian Herold took a page out of the 1986 movie, 'Hoosiers,' when his team spent 45 minutes on the field Sunday at Lamade Stadium, the renowned venue that can accommodate up to about 40,000 people for the World Series championship game. 'It's an iconic stadium, with so much history here,' he said. 'I took them around so they could see it's the same as the field in Prospect Park. There are four bases that are 60 feet apart, and the pitcher's mound is 46 feet (from home plate). I took them back to what's familiar.' While Hudson, Christian and their manager are focused on winning as many games as possible while in Williamsport, and not looking at being there as 'icing on the cake' to what already has been a spectacular season, they are enjoying other aspects of the experience, especially meeting and interacting with players from nine other United States teams and 10 international squads. 'It's kind of difficult to talk to them, but we go and play basketball and ping pong together,' Hudsons said of players from non-English-speaking countries. 'The whole experience has been amazing. I'll have it in my heart forever.' Players and managers/coaches from all teams stay in dorms and have a cafeteria where they eat together. 'The food is pretty good,' Christian said. 'Our team been close during the season, but staying together in the dorms has really bonded up together even more.' Herold is enjoying being in Williamsport for the Little League World Series, but watching the boys on his team have the experience makes it even better. 'It's just so special, the whole uniqueness of Williamsport,' he said.

Tampa Bay Rays at A's odds, picks and predictions

The Tampa Bay Rays (57-62) and the A's (53-67) open a 3-game series Monday at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento. First pitch is scheduled for 10:05 p.m. ET. Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's MLB odds around the Rays vs. A's odds and make our expert MLB picks and predictions for the best bets. Season series: A's lead 2-1 The Rays are in the midst of a 12-game West Coast road trip. It started out OK, as Tampa Bay won 2 of 3 games in Anaheim against the Los Angeles Angels. However, the Rays were swept in 3 games over the weekend against the Seattle Mariners. Tampa Bay was outscored 16-9 in the sweep, as the Over cashed in 2 of the outings. In Sunday's 6-3 loss against the Mariners, the Rays fell behind 4-0. However, Tampa Bay closed the deficit to 4-3, and that's how it stayed heading to the bottom of the seventh inning. However, the bullpen allowed a run in both the seventh and eighth innings. OF Chandler Simpson was 2-for-5 with a double, a triple and run scored from the leadoff spot. SS Ha-Seong Kim went 2-for-3 with a double, a solo home run, a walk and 2 RBIs. The A's are returning home after winning 2 of 3 games in both a road series in Washington, and a road series in Baltimore over the weekend. The A's edged Baltimore 3-2 on Sunday as the Under (9) cashed. They were down 2-1 heading to the ninth inning, but the A's scored twice in the top of the frame to steal the game in Charm City. C Willie MacIver delivered the 2-run double in the top of the ninth to win it. The A's are a respectable 11-5 in the past 16 games, while the Under is 4-1 in the past 5 games, and 13-3-1 in the past 17 outings. Rays at A's projected starters RHP Ryan Pepiot vs. LHP Jeffrey Springs Pepiot (7-9, 3.77 ERA) makes his 25th start of the season. He has a 1.18 WHIP, 3.1 BB/9 and 8.9 K/9 through 136 innings. Springs (10-7, 3.89 ERA) makes his 23rd start and 25th appearance. He has a 1.12 WHIP, 2.7 BB/9 and 7.3 K/9 through 132 innings. Rays at A's picks and predictions A's 5, Rays 3 Moneyline The A'S (-115) are a solid play behind Springs, the former Rays starter. Tampa Bay is just 14-18 against left-handed starting pitchers, and Springs should pitch with a little extra oomph against his old team, trying to kick them while they're down. The A's have been a pain for a lot of teams lately, and while they're just 23-34 at home, Springs is 4-1 in his past 7 starts. Run line/Against the spread If you're a bit conservative, and you just can't back the A's straight up, you could take them +1.5 (-185). That's a little too expensive for me, however. If you were toss them into a multi-leg parlay, it would be OK to use the A's, but don't do it as a standalone bet. AVOID, and just play the A's straight up. Over/Under UNDER 10 (-115) might be the best play on the board in this series opener. The Under is 5-3-1 in the past 9 games for the Rays, while going 13-3-1 in the past 17 outings for the A's. The Under is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings in this series since May 28, 2024, too. Play our free daily Pick'em Challenge and win! Play now! For more sports betting picks and tips, check out and BetFTW.
