‘Heartbroken beyond words.' Family of girl killed in sailboat crash speaks out
Erin was among five girls and a camp counselor aboard a 17-foot Hobie Getaway, part of a Miami Yacht Club summer camp program teaching children to sail, when it was hit by a 60-foot barge being pushed by a tugboat. The impact of the crash, which happened around 11 a.m. Monday, caused the boat to capsize.
The accident also claimed the life of 7-year-old Mila Yankelevich, the granddaughter of well-known Argentine television producers Cris Morena and Gustavo Yankelevich. Mila and her parents, also prominent in the arts, had moved to South Florida.

On behalf of the grieving Ko family, Erin's uncle and godfather, Alvin Wu, delivered the family's message to the public.
'Our lives were forever changed by a devastating accident that took Erin from us far too soon, leaving our family heartbroken beyond words,' the statement read. 'We hold the other victims and their loved ones in our hearts, sharing in the profound sorrow this loss has brought to so many.'

The Ko family has asked for privacy as they begin the painful process of grieving and healing. They shared a selection of photos commemorating Erin's life and said they hope, in time, to speak more about who she was and the joy she brought to those around her.
Erin attended Colegio San Pedro Nolasco de Vitacura in a province of Santiago until her family moved to South Florida in December. In a statement released Wednesday, the school remembered Erin as a kind, gifted student who 'left an indelible mark' on their community.
Erin excelled academically, especially in math, the school noted. She was on the volleyball team and participated in trapeze.
'Her friendliness and personality allowed her to interact with students at different levels, whether through her participation in extracurricular activities or through the family ties that united her with classmates from other classes,' the school wrote.
A memorial Mass was held Thursday in Chile, where Erin's former classmates and relatives gathered to remember her. In a video shared by the school, students formed a circle and released white balloons in her honor.
'While she was here, she was a light for us, for our school, ' the Chilean school's elementary school director Francisca Aburto told Miami Herald news partner CBS Miami. 'Erin left a mark that's indelible. So that's very important for us to pass that on.
'For me, I also taught Erin before taking over as principal. I was her teacher in fifth grade, and in sixth grade. It was a wonderful experience…'
Erin also had attended Nautilus Middle School in Miami Beach, Local 10 reported. The Miami-Dade school district confirmed Friday she was a student at one of its schools.
The collision occurred near Hibiscus and Monument Islands off Miami Beach. Two other campers, ages 8 and 11, were critically injured and rushed to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, officials say. The 19-year-old camp counselor and a 12-year-old girl were treated at the scene.

'The entire MYC family is devastated by this terrible tragedy,'' Emily Copeland, the Miami Yacht Club's commodore, said in an email to the Herald.

The U.S. Coast Guard, which is leading the investigation into the crash, has yet to publicly identify the victims nor indicate the girls' conditions at Jackson.
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office, which conducted the autopsies, concluded Erin and Mila accidentally drowned.

Lake Tahoe boating crackdown launched for Fourth of July weekend after deadly capsize
In the wake of one of Lake Tahoe's deadliest maritime disasters, law enforcement agencies across California and Nevada are mounting a full-scale safety campaign this Fourth of July weekend to prevent further tragedy on the lake's famously pristine but perilous waters. Last month, a sudden and violent squall capsized a boat near D.L. Bliss State Park, throwing 10 people into the frigid lake. Eight died. Two survived by clinging to the rocky shore in life jackets. The incident, among the worst recreational boating accidents in the region's history, sent shock waves through the tight-knit Tahoe boating community. From July 4 to 6, agencies from both states will participate in Operation Dry Water, a nationwide effort to curb boating under the influence through increased patrols, sobriety checkpoints and public education. Launched in 2009 by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators and supported by the U.S. Coast Guard, the campaign targets holiday weekends when waterways are busiest. 'Recreate responsibly: wear your life jacket, designate a sober operator and make safety the priority every time you're on the water,' Ramona Fernandez, deputy director of California's Division of Boating and Waterways, said in a statement. Captain Buck Tingle of the Nevada Department of Wildlife echoed the urgency. 'Drinking and boating is a recipe for disaster,' he added. 'Our job is to ensure everyone's safety on the water. If you're boating under the influence, you could be ending your holiday in handcuffs.' Participating agencies include dozens of county sheriff's departments, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and law enforcement units from Washoe and El Dorado counties. Patrol boats will be active on Lake Tahoe, Lake Mead, Lake Oroville and other heavily trafficked waterways. Boaters are being urged to wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets, check weather forecasts, file float plans and avoid alcohol while on the water. According to the Coast Guard, alcohol was the leading contributing factor in 17% of fatal boating accidents in 2023. In addition to enforcing sobriety, authorities are ramping up environmental protections. Mandatory boat inspections and designated no-wake zones — areas with strict speed limits to prevent boats from creating waves that disturb wildlife habitats or swimmers — are to be enforced around Lake Tahoe. A free Tahoe Boating app provides live weather updates, no-wake zone maps and safety tips. Officials warn that weather conditions could pose additional risks. The National Weather Service warns of gusty southwest winds on Thursday and Friday, with speeds reaching up to 25 mph on the lake and up to 40 mph on ridges. These winds may generate hazardous waves, especially for smaller vessels. Conditions are expected to improve by the weekend, bringing sunny skies and seasonal temperatures in the low to mid-70s. 'People often think of life jackets as bulky or uncomfortable,' Tingle said. 'But they've come a long way. Today's life jackets are stylish, comfortable — and most importantly, they save lives.' With tens of thousands expected on Tahoe's waters this weekend, authorities hope increased vigilance and a strong multiagency presence will keep the holiday celebration safe.

Rescue workers in Chile find the body of one of 5 miners trapped in a copper mine
BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Rescue teams found a body inside a section of a Chilean copper mine that collapsed two days earlier during a moderate earthquake, the mine's director said Saturday. Rescuers have been trying to reach five miners who were trapped Thursday evening in the El Teniente mine in central Chile as rocks collapsed around them during a 4.2 magnitude quake. The copper mine is one of Chile's largest. A spokesman for the rescue team that is trying to drill through 90 meters (295 feet) of rock to reach the miners said the body found on Saturday is one of the five miners who were trapped in the mine. El Teniente Director Andres Music said authorities were still trying to identify the body. The body of another miner — not one of the five still trapped — identified as Paulo Marin Tapia was found Friday, shortly after the mine's partial collapse. Nine other mine workers suffered injuries, said Chile's National Copper Corp., known as Codelco, describing the incident as a result of 'a seismic event.'

Fourth body found on Whitby beach in three days amid string of tragedies
A woman's body has been discovered below the cliffs near Whitby, marking the fourth such tragic discovery in the area within three days. The North Yorkshire Police coastal team confirmed the sad news this afternoon, stating that the woman's body was found at Sandsend, near Whitby, below the cliffs behind the main car park. The woman, a local resident in her 50s, was spotted at 11.01am by a member of the public who promptly alerted the emergency services.
