Police ID 3 killed after SUV hits tree, bursts into flames on Long Island

Yahoo14-05-2025
Three 20-year-old men were the victims of a fatal car crash in Bethpage, Long Island on Mother's Day, Nassau County police confirmed Tuesday.
Police identified Gino Vicale of Seaford, Nicholas Rivera of Glendale, and Vincent Cavaliere of Bethpage as the occupants of the 2022 Dodge Durango that slammed into a tree near Bethpage State Park and burst into flames around 1 a.m. on Sunday as they traveled east on Stymus Avenue.
Police are still investigating what led to the crash, who had been driving and how fast they were going.
Cavaliere was a sophomore at Assumption University in Worcester, Mass., and was a defensive back on the school's football team. He had also played at Plainedge High School, winning two All-Conference football championships in 2019 and 2021, according to his biography on the university's athletics website.
Details on Vicale and Rivera were not immediately available on Tuesday, but friends told ABC News that all three had attended Plainedge High School.
A makeshift memorial that had sprung up on Sunday continued to grow Monday, as friends of the three came by to inspect the scene, pay tribute and grieve, News 12 Long Island reported.
Neighbors said over the weekend that the stretch of road, which is often used as a high-speed shortcut between two local highways, is known to be dangerous.

Ketel Marte's post-burglary actions irking Diamondbacks teammates

Ketel Marte is reportedly frustrating his teammates, though his manager pushed back against the severity of that narrative. The Arizona Republic reported Thursday that some Diamondbacks players and 'others in the organization have quietly grumbled about' the star second baseman's 'propensity to ask for days off.' Marte, 31, reportedly asked for a day off in Arizona's final game before the All-Star break. The outlet wrote that Marte 'raised eyebrows' when he 'motored around the bases in Atlanta on a double in the All-Star Game' after taking a game off just days earlier. But Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, who said he was unaware of the timing of the break-in, didn't feel as if he needed to address the clubhouse over it, he told Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks gestures to the crowd after hitting a three-run home run in the ninth inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on August 13, 2025 in Arlington, Texas. Getty Images 'I will say that Ketel Marte has a massive heart,' Lovullo said. 'He is extremely emotional. He loves to play. He wants to be in the middle of everything with his teammates every single day.' During the break, Marte, who traveled to the Dominican Republic after playing in the All-Star Game, had his home in Arizona burglarized, losing about $400,000 worth of items. Marte then took three more games off post-All-Star break, although he stayed in the Dominican Republic rather than return to his home in Scottsdale after the burglary. Per the Arizona Republic report, some inside the franchise believe Marte's 'departure around the All-Star break set in motion the collapse that led to the Diamondbacks' trade deadline sell-off.' The Diamondbacks are in the midst of a disappointing season, sitting at 60-62 heading into Friday's play, after finishing above .500 in each of the past two seasons, including a World Series appearance in 2023. The franchise traded away several key pieces — Josh Naylor, Eugenio Suarez, Merrill Kelly, Randal Grichuk and Shelby Miller — ahead of the deadline when it appeared a playoff run wasn't in the cards this season. Getty Images The situation has led some of the Arizona Republic's sources to wonder if the team should trade Marte, who has been in a Diamondbacks uniform since 2017 and signed a six-year, $116.5 million contract extension in April, over the offseason. Marte is one of the top second basemen in baseball, making three All-Star teams and twice finishing in the top five of the National League MVP voting. This year, he's enjoying another excellent season, hitting .296/.398/.557 with 23 home runs in 89 games. But his actions have some of those who play alongside him every day wondering if his production is worth the trouble. 'He is a great player, they say, when he wants to be,' the Arizona Republic wrote.

Angels-Dodgers fans get into ugly brawl that leads to two arrests

Things got ugly quickly in the outfield stands at Angel Stadium. During Wednesday's game between the Angels and the Dodgers, a violent brawl broke out, with punches and kicks being thrown throughout. The incident, which was caught on camera and went viral on social media, included a fan wearing a Mike Trout Angels jersey getting punched by a man in a black shirt. After the Angels fan fell back into his seat, a Dodgers supporter ran behind and kicked him directly in the head. The altercation led to two arrests, according to TMZ Sports. A spokesperson for the Anaheim Police Department said the fight 'appears to have started over the stealing of a hat,' per TMZ Sports. However, the police did not say exactly who took the cap. The Dodgers fan kicked the Angels fan directly in the head. @Actually_Borgen/X The APD said two people in their mid-20s were arrested for the fight, with one being charged with a misdemeanor assault and the other — who the cops deemed the primary attacker — is facing a felony assault charge. The identities of the two individuals have not been released. At the time of the brawl, the victim did not accept transportation to the hospital for his injuries, and it remains unclear if they went to seek medical attention following the game. Two people were arrested for the fight. @Actually_Borgen/X As for the game, the Angels ended up sweeping their rival with a 6-5 comeback win, only furthering the Dodgers' skid to start the second half of the season. Following the loss, Shohei Ohtani said that the Dodgers are doing everything possible to try and end their cold streak. 'Obviously, it doesn't feel good to fall into second place and to lose a lot of these games,' Ohtani told reporters. 'We're doing everything in our power, having close meetings, doing everything that we can to try to right the ship. We just have to do a better job.' With the Dodgers holding a 10-13 record since the All-Star break, the Padres have risen to first place in the NL West, holding a one-game lead over Los Angeles.
