PD Act will be invoked against encroachers, warns Surekha

HYDERABAD: Endowments Minister Konda Surekha on Thursday warned that the Preventive Detention Act (PD Act) will be invoked against those who encroach upon land belonging to temples and the Endowments department.
The minister, on the request of local leaders, inspected the allegedly encroached lands in Chengicherla in Medchal-Malkajgiri district.
Later speaking to reporters, the minister said that a total of 30.23 acres in three survey numbers in Chengicherla belonging to the Endowments department and a few individuals have been occupied since 2022.
'After conducting a survey, the authorities confirmed that this land belongs to the Endowments department. We have ordered an inquiry. After receiving the survey report, the government will take appropriate action,' she said while instructing the officials to erect a fence around the land to protect it.
The officials informed her that out of a total of 91,827 acres of land belonging to the Endowments department, close to 6,000 acres of land is under encroachment.
Later in the day, the Endowments minister made a surprise visit to the Balkampet Yellamma temple to inspect the arrangements being made for the upcoming annual kalyana mahotsavam of Goddess Yellamma.

A local court in Guntur on Monday (August 11) sentenced a man to six months' simple imprisonment in connection with an auto-rickshaw theft case reported at the Guntur APSRTC bus stand last year. According to Superintendent of Police S. Satish Kumar, the incident took place between 10 p.m. on August 12 and 6 a.m. on August 13, 2024, when complainant 51-year-old Derangula Veeraswamy, a member of the Vaddera community, parked his auto-rickshaw worth ₹50,000 near the bus stand and returned to find it missing. A formal complaint was lodged on September 3, 2024, with Head Constable Shaik Kareemulla Sharif registering an FIR. Investigations led to the arrest of 33-year-old Potineni Gopi, a resident of Vadlamudi village in Chebrolu mandal, who was produced before the court. On Monday, Honourable Judge Mohammad Gouse of the VI Additional Junior Civil Judge Court, Guntur, convicted Gopi under Section 271(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and sentenced him to six months' simple imprisonment. Police said Gopi has a rowdy sheet against him and is already serving a sentence in Rajamahendravaram Central Prison under the Preventive Detention Act.

Tirupati: Kadapa district police arrested six most wanted red sanders smugglers and seized red sanders logs worth approximately 1 cr near the Lankamalla forest area. According to Kadapa SP EG Ashok Kumar, Chapadu police arrested E Naga Dasthagiri Reddy (35), M Ramamohan Reddy (47), U Krishnaiah (53), K Srinivasulu (44), B Obul Reddy (54) and S Balagangi Reddy (44). Police recovered 52 red sanders logs weighing around one tonne and seized two cars and a bike from the possession of the accused. Naga Dasthagiri Reddy was a most wanted smuggler, accused in about 84 smuggling cases and 34 theft cases. He was even booked thrice under the Preventive Detention Act but continued to involve in smuggling activities. His wife Lalubi is also a smuggler, who is serving a jail sentence at present. Many others in his family are also involved in smuggling activities, the SP said. Police investigation revealed that Delhi-based red sanders kingpin Saleem and others used to route money through hawala network headed by Hyderabad-based Vikram Singh Solanki to Naga Dasthagiri Reddy. Police had recently arrested Vikram Solanki. Police said other smugglers nabbed by the police were also seasoned offenders involved in multiple smuggling cases. Tirupati: The famous Konda Bitragunta Sri Prasanna Venkateswara Swamy temple will soon get its temple tank (Koneru) renovated at a cost of Rs 2.10 crore. VPR Foundation established by Nellore TDP MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, has come forward to sponsor the cost of renovation, giving the temple a refreshingly new look. The temple is also getting a compound wall with Rs 1.65 crore provided by the Endowments department. Vemireddy along with his wife and Kovur legislator Vemireddy Prashanthi Reddy and Kavali MLA Dagumati Venkata Krishna Reddy, took part in the foundation stone laying ceremony for the proposed development works at the temple on Sunday. Addressing the public, the MP recalled that the 800-year-old temple deserved a better maintenance and called it a 'divine blessing' bestowed upon him for taking up the work. He expected the developmental work to be completed before the Brahmotsavam to be conducted next year. Prashanthi Reddy, who is also a member of the TTD trust board, offered to moot the idea of establishing a Veda Patashala here. She added that efforts are underway to secure additional funds to the tune of Rs 15 crore for the comprehensive development of this ancient shrine with the help of the state govt's support.
