Bengaluru stampede: Open invitation without preparation is criminal negligence, says MP Tejasvi Surya
Bengaluru: Bangalore South MP
Tejasvi Surya
criticized the decision to hold an open invitation event at Chinnaswamy Stadium without logistical preparation as "criminal negligence" that culminated in the loss of 11 innocent lives.
Drawing a comparison with the 2011 World Cup victory celebrations in Mumbai, Surya said despite the participation of over 15 lakh people there, no such tragedy occurred. That was because of better crowd management and planning in Mumbai, he pointed out.
Surya lashed out at what he described as an "egotistical and irresponsible" attempt by the state's top leadership, including CM Siddaramiah and DCM DK Shivakumar, to get involved in RCB celebrations and "bask in undeserved glory".
He alleged that despite being fully aware of the massive crowd that would gather for the event, the govt failed to make adequate safety arrangements. "It is not cricketers or fans who are to blame.
The state govt, particularly the CM and DCM, orchestrated a scenario that led to this tragic stampede," Surya said.
He urged the RCB franchise to show solidarity with its fanbase. "Even though there is no legal obligation, morally and humanely, the franchise should come forward to support and compensate the victims' families," Surya said.

Row over Bengaluru stampede intensifies after complaint against CM Siddaramaiah filed with governor
Bengaluru: A formal complaint was submitted to Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Saturday against chief minister Siddaramaiah over alleged negligence leading to the June 4 stampede near the Chinnaswamy stadium that claimed 11 lives, even as the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intensified its attack on the Congress leadership in the state. In his complaint to the governor, Girish Kumar, a resident of Kottigepalya in Bengaluru, alleged that the chief minister had personally invited the public to participate in the celebrations of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory without ensuring adequate safety arrangements. The complaint also questioned the state government's decision to host a grand reception for a private cricket franchise like RCB, claiming that IPL is a commercial venture driven by profit motives rather than national pride. 'Players are bought by franchises and play for money, not for the country or the state,' the letter alleged, pointing out that such celebrations were not extended to national heroes such as soldiers or Olympic athletes. The complainant also criticised deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar for receiving the RCB team at the airport, calling it excessive and unwarranted. He alleged that the government failed in its duty to protect citizens and demanded that those responsible for the mismanagement be held accountable. The stampede on June 4 evening occurred in front of the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru, where a large number of people thronged to participate in the RCB team's maiden IPL victory celebrations. At least 11 people died and 56 were injured in the incident. Meanwhile, the one-man inquiry commission constituted by the state government under retired high court judge John Michael Cunha to inquire into the stampede, has been asked to identify the persons responsible for the omissions or deficiencies that led to this incident. A political slugfest over the incident continued, with senior BJP leader and Union minister of state Shobha Karandlaje alleging that CM Siddaramiah and his deputy Shivakumar have 'blood on their hands', holding them directly responsible for the stampede and demanded their resignation. 'The parents who have lost their children are cursing. They (CM and DCM) are trying to wash the blood on their hands and wipe it on police officers,' Karandlaje alleged. Taking to social media, CM Siddaramaiah on Saturday said, 'I have ordered an increase in the compensation announced for the families of those who died in the stampede at Chinnaswamy Stadium from ₹10 lakh each to ₹25 lakh.' The increased compensation announcement comes even as victims' family alleged that no one has visited them so far. 'We are a very poor family... It has been three days since my son died, but not a single official has visited our home. We have received no help from the government either,' Mariyamma, mother of Shiva Linga, who died in the stampede, told reporters. Separately, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA)president Raghuram Bhat on Saturday said the resignation of A Shankar and ES Jairam, secretary and treasurer of the governing body, was accepted in an emergency meeting but ruled out dissolving the rest of the managing committee. The emergency meeting was convened after the two senior officials stepped down from their respective roles through a letter to the KSCA president, taking moral responsibility for the stampede . D Gukesh heartbreak paves way for Magnus Carlsen in Norway Chess
D Gukesh and Magnus Carlsen at Norway Chess (Images via X/@NorwayChess) D Gukesh failed to see the knight fork. And when it was on the board, the pain was difficult to hide. The 19-year-old record-breaking world champion did not cry. He did not bang the table either. But he was inconsolable, sitting stunned in his chair, covering his face and forehead. He remained in the chair, not making eye contact with anyone and turning the chair the other way, making his face less visible. Fabiano Caruana had given a lifeline to Gukesh in the 10th and last round by missing some tactics in a thrilling endgame in Stavanger on Friday. The winning position for the American turned dead equal when Caruana made a dubious pawn push on the 47th turn in the queen, knight, bishop and pawns vs queen, rook and pawns endgame. He failed to see a forced sequence that would have given him extra bishop in queen and pawns each climax. But Gukesh made a cardinal mistake of queening his d-file pawn in a hurry. The knight fork (for rook and queen) which gave him quite a heartburn. Moments earlier, Magnus Carlsen had just managed to draw with Arjun E,rigaisi and jumped to a minimum 16 points in a topsy-turvy game, meaning a classical 3-0 win for Caruana would be still short of Carlsen by at least half a point. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Poll Who do you believe will be the next big contender against Magnus Carlsen? D Gukesh Fabiano Caruana Arjun Erigaisi But if Gukesh had held his position to a draw in time trouble, he could have caught Carlsen level on points with a win in the Armageddon (worth 1.5 points) and Carlsen losing the Armageddon (worth one point). That would have set up a blitz tiebreak between Carlsen and Gukesh for the title. But Gukesh let this opportunity slip away. For a change, lady luck smiled the other way. Minutes later, Carlsen indeed lost his Armageddon game against Arjun with black pieces. But it was still good enough to be clear first and clinch the Norway title for the seventh time. Virat Kohli's love for 'dhaba' food, priority for family & more | RCB bus driver shares stories Earlier, Anna Muzychuk failed to beat R Vaishali with white pieces in a winning position in the Armageddon game. The draw with white pieces (hence technical defeat in 10 mins vs 7 mins scenario) meant she finished on 16.5 points and had to wait for Humpy's result. Since the Indian veteran could only draw with women's world champion Ju Wenjun after a temporary knight sacrifice in the classical game, Ukraine's world No. 7, Muzychuk (Elo 2535), took an unassailable lead.
