Banks need to build resilience against cyber threat: DFS Secretary

New Delhi, Jul 19 (PTI) Financial Services Secretary M Nagaraju on Saturday cautioned banks to bolster their defences against the growing menace of cyber threats.
Speaking at a prize distribution ceremony of the 'Code Against Malware' hackathon at PNB headquarters here, Nagaruaju highlighted the growing importance of cybersecurity in the banking sector.
Such initiatives align with the national goal of building resilience against emerging digital threats, he said.
Launched in December 2024, the 'Code Against Malware' hackathon invited student teams from IIT Kanpur and other premier institutions to develop endpoint security solutions to detect ransomware, using behavioural analysis, artificial intelligence, and heuristic techniques.
The hackathon was conducted in collaboration with the IIT Kanpur, under the guidance of the Department of Financial Services (DFS) and the Indian Banks' Association (IBA), with the objective of fostering innovation in cybersecurity and engaging India's young technical talent.
PNB MD and CEO Ashok Chandra, in his remarks, underscored the institution's commitment to driving innovation, strengthening cyber defences, and promoting collaboration between industry and academia. PTI DP BAL BAL

"I'm disappointed in President Putin, very disappointed in him," Trump said, as quoted by news agency AFP, adding, 'We're going to reduce that 50 days to something like 10 or 12. I think I already know what's going to happen.' Ukraine praised Trump for saying he would cut the 50-day deadline. "Thanks to President Trump for standing firm and delivering a clear message of peace through strength," Ukrainian presidential aide Andriy Yermak said on social media, adding, "When America leads with strength, others think twice." Trump had originally warned Putin of severe economic penalties if the conflict wasn't halted by early September. These included 100 percent secondary tariffs on Russia and its trading partners, a move that would force any country continuing trade with Moscow to pay a steep price to sell goods in the US. This could affect nations like India and China, which still maintain trade relations with Russia. Trump told reporters at Turnberry that the decision to shorten the timeline was made because ceasefire hopes had repeatedly collapsed. 'We thought we had that settled numerous times,' he said, 'and then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city like Kyiv and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever — you have bodies lying all over the street.' The US President has in recent weeks begun expressing unusually harsh criticism of Putin. 'There's a bit of an issue with him,' he remarked, as per Politico. Although Trump has had several discussions with the Russian leader, even claiming they came close to ceasefire terms five times, little concrete progress has been made. Trump also addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, stating that a ceasefire there was 'possible' and urging international partners to share the responsibility. He criticised Hamas for reportedly stealing aid and added, 'It's not a US problem. It's an international problem.'

Union Minister Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani said Billionaire Elon Musk's satellite communications company, Starlink, can only have 20 lakh connections in India amid the competitive threat to the state-owned BSNL and other telecom operators, reported news agency PTI on Monday, 28 July 2025. Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, the Minister of State for Rural Development and Telecommunications, also said that the US-based satellite internet provider will be able to offer up to 200 Mbps of internet speed, which the government believes will not affect other telecom operators. 'Starlink can have only 20 lakh customers in India and offer up to 200 Mbps speed. That won't affect telecom services,' Minister Pemmasani told the news agency on the sidelines of a BSNL review meeting. The company's satellite internet services are expected to target customers in the rural and remote areas of India, which is also a big market for the state-owned telecom service provider BSNL. Minister Pemmasani also said that the upfront cost for the satcom service will be too high, and the monthly cost will likely be around ₹ 3,000. According to the report, Pemmasani also said that BSNL's 4G network rollout is completed, and the government-owned telecom provider does not plan to increase its network tariffs at this time. 'We want market first. There are no tariff hikes planned,' the minister told the news agency. According to the official website, the eStarlink network is the world's first and largest satellite internet provider. The technology uses Earth's lower orbit to deliver broadband (Wi-Fi) internet to its users. People can use this broadband network to support streaming, online gaming, and video calling by accessing the satellite network through their home setup or portable Starlink equipment. Billionaire founder Elon Musk's space tech startup SpaceX owns and controls Starlink's operations worldwide. Mint reported earlier that Starlink aims to address connectivity issues in rural and remote regions of India and expand the domestic telecom industry with its satellite technology.

Google officials appear before ED in case linked to promotion of "illegal" online betting and gambling platforms
Representative Image Google executives appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection to a money laundering investigation related to alleged promotion of "illegal" online betting and gambling platforms, reports news agency PTI. The probe agency had called executives of both Google and Meta, first on July 21. The officials then sought more time, citing the need to gather relevant documents and information before they present themselves for questioning and recording of their statements. However, only representatives of Google deposed, the agency said, quoting official sources. As per the PTI report, ED may have recorded the statement of a designated "compliance officer" of Google under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in addition to obtaining some documents from the company. A Google spokesperson told the news agency in a statement last week that the company was "committed to keeping our platforms safe and secure, prohibiting the promotion of illegal gambling ads." The tech companies were called to explain the mechanisms that allowed such promotions. The ED is also expected to question several celebrities and sportspersons in connection with the same probe. Earlier this month, actors Prakash Raj, Vijay Deverakonda, and Rana Daggubati and 26 other celebrities were charged by ED for endorsing betting apps. They have been accused of violating the Public Gambling Act, 1867, by promoting such gambling apps. According to the agency, the platforms under investigation were involved in cheating users and laundering money, with large-scale tax evasion also suspected. The ED is currently handling more than a dozen cases linked to illegal betting apps, including the Mahadev Online Book, which is believed to be run by individuals from Chhattisgarh.
