Prince Harry asked Princess Diana's brother for advice on changing family name
Names and titles continue to be a highly sensitive subject for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. It has now been revealed Prince Harry reportedly explored ways with Earl Spencer to change his family name
Prince Harry reportedly sought advice from Princess Diana 's brother about changing his family name.
It's been almost thirty years since Princess Diana was killed in a car crash in Paris at the age of 36. Her younger brother Earl Spencer was just 32 years old at the time, while their sister Sarah and Jane were 42 and 40 years old.
Earl Charles Spencer recently made a heartbreaking admission about her death during a special episode of Loose Men. The Earl made his debut as a panellist on Loose Men today, as the panel were talking about their close bonds with their siblings.
Explaining how it felt to lose a sibling, Earl Spencer said it's like an "amputation." He later revealed that for years after his sister's tragic death, he thought he had to "ring her to tell her something" – before realising he couldn't anymore.
The Duchess of Sussex gave up her royal title along with husband Prince Harry when they stepped down as senior royals in March 2020. They still retain the HRH titles, which Harry has had since birth, but are not supposed to use them for commercial purposes.
Names and titles continue to be a highly sensitive subject for the pair. The Sussex title was given to the pair on the morning of their wedding in May 2018 by Prince Harry's late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.
But, the Mail on Sunday has revealed Prince Harry explored ways to take his mother's surname and ditch Mountbatten-Windsor, used by his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet and a name cherished by King Charles.
It is understood Prince Harry discussed the issue with Earl Spencer during a rare visit to Britain, but was told that the legalities surrounding the change were to great to overcome. A friend of Prince Harry told MailOnline: "They had a very amicable conversation and Spencer advised him against taking such a step".
The surname Mountbatten-Windsor is only available to descendants of the late Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. It combines the Royal Family 's name of Windsor and the Duke of Edinburgh 's adopted surname.
Royal author Tom Bower has claimed that 'Meghan decided her real object in life was to be Diana'. If the name change had succeeded, Meghan's daughter would have become Lilibet Diana Spencer.
According to the Government, you do not have to follow a legal process to start using a new name, but it suggests on its official website using a 'deed poll' to apply for or to change official documents such as a passport or driving licence.

Harry and Meghan wedding bombshells - 's*** show to tears over Kate's comment'
When Prince Harry and Meghan tied the knot back in 2018, on the outside it seemed to the public a fairytale day - but behind the scenes, it was reportedly 'all drama' as the couple prepared for the big day On the surface, everything seemed picture-perfect when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tied the knot in a lavish royal wedding in 2018. Millions of people tuned in to watch the nuptials across the globe, with the public's attention totally captivated by the fairytale story unfolding before their eyes: one of the monarchy's most popular members was finally settling down. Whilst Meghan had a public profile before marrying into the Royal Family - thanks to her successful career as an actress - she was quickly catapulted to new heights of notoriety, and behind closed doors, the pressure of the spotlight started getting to the couple. The pair eventually stepped back from royal life less than two years later, finding things as full-time working royals unworkable, and moved across the pond to start a new life in California - Meghan's home state. Harry and Meghan recently celebrated their seventh wedding anniversary, with Meghan sharing a sweet photo collage board on her Instagram that was filled with sentimental nods to the big day. Last year, a source who has worked with the couple since they moved to the US said the pair are clearly still "hot for each other" - but whilst their marriage may be as strong as ever, the tensions that first reared their heads in the preparations for the wedding with the other senior royals have only increased with time. The Mirror looks back at some of the biggest bombshells surrounding Meghan and Harry's wedding. A 's*** show' Insiders revealed that things were pretty stressful and strained in the lead-up to Harry and Meghan's wedding in 2018, with author Tina Brown claiming that it was a "s*** show" in her book Palace Papers, quoting an insider as saying things were "all drama, all the time". The author claimed that palace aides and staff members rapidly became "fed up" with the demands being put on them by the couple as they prepared for the big day. Urgent warning from guards The photographer who took the official portraits of the newlywed couple and their loved ones on the big day recently opened up about a severe warning given to all guests upon their arrival at the chapel. Alexi Lubomirski revealed in a TikTok video that guards urgently warned guests as they came in: "Ladies and gentlemen, please be careful what you are saying to each other because the world can lip read." This was why, he explained, many of the guests were seen covering their mouths as they chatted away, "As you walk in, you see a lot of people sort of talking like don't know what you're talking about, but everyone on these cameras is watching and lip-reading." Queen 'scolded' Meghan Royal author Katie Nicholl has claimed that after Meghan spoke sharply to a member of the catering staff during the wedding prep, the late Queen wasn't best pleased. The now-Duchess was taking part in a menu tasting to make sure all the dishes would be perfect for the big day - but when she tried one, she was reportedly left convinced that she could taste egg, meaning it wasn't vegan as directed. "She got quite upset, saying that the dish was meant to be vegan and macrobiotic," a source told the author, reported in her book The New Royals, however the Queen intervened almost immediately after hearing what she said, the source claimed. "Suddenly the Queen walked in and said: 'Meghan, in this family we don't speak to people like that.'" Unexpected reply to Charles' offer In the lead-up to Meghan's wedding, her relationship with her father Thomas Markle Senior quickly began to break down. Thomas was caught staging a photo shoot with paparazzi ahead of the big day, and whilst he later expressed regret over his decision to take part in it, things between the once-close father and daughter began to unravel. The Duchess has claimed that she only found out he was not attending her wedding due to health issues through media reports, and the pair are now totally estranged, with Thomas never having met Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, three. It had initially been planned that Thomas would be the one to walk his daughter down the aisle on her Windsor wedding day, but with him unable to attend, Charles - then Prince of Wales - offered to step into his place. However, Meghan's reaction to the offer is claimed to have caught him off guard. Author Richard Hardman claimed in his book Queen of Our Times, "The reply, according to one friend, was not quite what he was expecting: 'Can we meet halfway?' Here was an indicator that this was no blushing bride, but a confident, independent woman determined to make a grand entrance on her own." Tiara tensions Ahead of the wedding day, there were some tensions behind the scenes over what tiara Meghan would wear during the wedding. Author Tom Bower claimed in his book Revenge that after Meghan met with the Queen and Angela Kelly - the late monarch's dresser and confidant - to go over tiara options, "Meghan alighted on a tiara sparkling with emeralds. Her choice was approved by Harry. Kelly suggested that its Russian origin made it unsuitable." However, the tiara drama didn't end there. There were also issues over access to the tiara that was finally landed on, with Meghan wanting to schedule a rehearsal with the piece so her hairdresser could get to grips with fitting it and ensuring it worked with the veil when these requests to access the tiara were denied, it led to the now-infamous claim that Harry said: "What Meghan wants, Meghan gets". Bower further claimed that Harry then got cross with Angela, which led to something of a telling off from the late Queen, with reports from The Times published back in 2018 echoing these claims. "There was a very heated exchange that prompted the Queen to speak to Harry. She said, 'Meghan cannot have whatever she wants. She gets what tiara she's given by me.' The Queen also questioned why Meghan needed a veil for the wedding, given it was to be her second marriage.' However, Harry's version of events is pretty different than others that have been put forward. In Spare, the way he tells it there was some tension over the issue, but he notes the late Queen was "tender" with Meghan during the tiara selection process, and also personally advised that they made sure to practice with it ahead of the big day - something that Princess Kate also warned the bride was definitely a necessity. "It's tricky and you don't want to be doing it for the first time on the wedding day," he quoted his grandmother as saying. He also noted that there was no disagreement over which tiara Meghan should wear, with everyone in agreement over which one suited her best. He claims that Angela Kelly was deliberately "obstructive" when it came to helping organise Meghan practising with her hairdresser, and that she repeatedly ignored their messages or wouldn't facilitate access to the historic piece. Harry then alleged that when Angela eventually brought the tiara to Kensington Palace, he "thanked her, though I added that it would've made our lives so much easier to have had it sooner." This didn't seem to please Angela in Harry's version of events: "Her eyes were fire. She started having a go at fixed me with a look that made me shiver. I could read in her face a clear warning. 'This isn't over.'" Flower girl dresses Around the time of the wedding, it was widely reported that Meghan made Kate cry over the dresses the flower girls were set to wear - however, Meghan later claimed that this had been reported incorrectly, and it was in fact her who had been left in tears by the future Queen. She also revealed in her sit down with Oprah Winfrey that Kate the next day brought her flowers and apologised and that despite their argument, she thought Kate was a "good person". It had been reported that the two women had fallen out about the length of Princess Charlotte's dress - with Kate believing it to be too short - and the future Queen wanting to stick with protocol and have the youngsters wear tights, something that Meghan didn't think was necessary. "A few days before the wedding, she was upset about something pertaining - yes, the issue was correct - about flower-girl dresses, and it made me cry, and it really hurt my feelings," Meghan said to Oprah about the incident. "What was hard to get over was being blamed for something that not only I didn't do but that happened to me. "And the people who were part of our wedding going to our comms team and saying, "I know this didn't happen". I don't have to tell them what actually happened," she added. Joanne Froggatt among signatories calling on Government to take action on Sudan
Joanne Froggatt among signatories calling on Government to take action on Sudan Froggatt is among 50 high-profile people from TV, film, music and sport who have signed an open letter led by children's charity Plan International UK which calls on the Prime Minister to tackle the crisis in Sudan Joanne Froggatt Downton Abbey star Joanne Froggatt is among dozens of famous faces who have called on the UK Government to take "rapid action" and provide humanitarian aid to Sudan. Froggatt is among 50 high-profile people from TV, film, music and sport who have signed an open letter led by children's charity Plan International UK which calls on the Prime Minister to tackle the crisis in Sudan by maintaining funding commitments after announcing a cut in the foreign aid budget. The letter, which was also signed by Warfare's Will Poulter, Bridgerton actress Adjoa Andoh and singer-songwriter Cat Burns, will be delivered to 10 Downing Street on Monday alongside a petition signed by more than 8,500 members of the public. Froggatt said: "Millions of children have been forced into dangerous, overcrowded camps both within and beyond Sudan. These are not safe places for such young lives. "Children's lives are now characterised by danger and death as hunger and disease spread while the violence rages on. "They are suffering in silence. We need to draw attention to this crisis and demand rapid action from the UK Government. By talking about Sudan we can save children's lives." Article continues below Since the outbreak of the civil war in April 2023, Sudan has topped the International Rescue Committee's (IRC) Emergency Watchlist, which analyses countries that are most likely to experience a new or worsening humanitarian crisis, for a second consecutive year. The IRC has also described it as "the largest and fastest displacement crisis in the world" and the "largest humanitarian crisis on record". England footballer Lucy Bronze, director Sir Steve McQueen and musician Peter Gabriel have also added their names to the open letter alongside TV cook Delia Smith and boxer Ramla Ali. The letter reads: "Following over two years of violent conflict, Sudan is now the world's largest humanitarian crisis, with half of the country's population – a staggering 24.6 million people – already facing high levels of acute food insecurity. "Time is quickly running out. Violence, starvation and disease are killing more and more children every day. The UK Government must do all it can to help save lives before it is too late." Burns, who is known for her hit song Go, added: "What's happening in Sudan is devastating. "Children are being torn from their homes, going hungry, and living through horrors no one should ever face. "We can't turn away or stay quiet. The world needs to act before even more lives are lost." The letter also urges the Government to increase international pressure and mediation to ensure a ceasefire as well as providing emergency funding and scaling up mutual aid groups. Poulter, who is known for We're The Millers and The Maze Runner, said: "The stories about the scale of starvation coming out of Sudan are utterly heart-breaking. "The situation is quickly escalating into one of the worst famines ever recorded. "With such an extreme shortage of food, immediate action is needed now to save lives and prevent further suffering. We can't let children and their families in Sudan starve to death." The letter is supported by a coalition of aid organisations, including the chief executives of Cafod, Save the Children UK, Action Against Hunger, Christian Aid, and leading Sudanese campaigners. Mohamed Kamal, country director for Plan International Sudan, said: "The sheer scale of the suffering being endured by people in Sudan is almost impossible to comprehend. "Two years of brutal fighting, severe restrictions on the delivery of life-saving aid and a near-total collapse of the food supply across the country has caused a humanitarian catastrophe on a scale the world hasn't witnessed in generations. "With every day that passes, more and more children face the unacceptable risk of death from extreme hunger, war and disease. Turning our backs on them would be utterly inhumane." A spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: "As the Foreign Secretary said, Sudan is suffering one of the worst humanitarian catastrophes on record, which is why we convened leaders from around the world in April to strengthen support for the Sudanese people. "The UK is doing all we can to provide aid, and last month announced £120 million to support over 650,000 Sudanese people in desperate need. Article continues below "The number of people who need help will rise if the warring parties continue to show an appalling disregard for human life by blocking aid routes that must be kept open, accessible and safe."

Huge twist in Mobland finale guarantees second series, say fans – despite backlash over Pierce Brosnan's accent
Actor Pierce Brosnan's Irish accent was criticised, but an epic final episode has proven why the Paramount+ show needs to return clever plot Huge twist in Mobland finale guarantees second series, say fans – despite backlash over Pierce Brosnan's accent Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A HUGE twist in the finale of Guy Ritchie's Mobland series has guaranteed a second series, according to fans. The tenth episode of the gangster show faced backlash over Pierce Brosnan's Irish accent - with some critics calling for it to be axed. 2 Pierce Brosnan was criticised over his Irish accent Credit: Luke Varley/Paramount+ 2 Tom Hardy's character's fate was left on a cliffhanger at the end of series one Credit: Luke Varley/Paramount+ However, a dramatic end involving Tom Hardy's character Harry appears to have got viewers hooked on the idea of more episodes. In a shock move, Harry's loyal wife Jan stabbed him in the chest in a fit of rage while chopping carrots in the kitchen. Fans think this cliffhanger ending proves why the show must return - to find out whether he survives. Sharing various thoughts on how series two will play out, one said: "I saw a post about the ending being bad and Harry getting stabbed being a way for Tom Hardy to leave, but I feel like what followed after the stabbing was kind of a wink that nothing is going to happen to him. "Harry is definitely the cherry on top of the cake and the showrunners are not oblivious to that. "If the show has a season 2, Harry will be in there and he would've survived." Someone else added: "After enjoying the S1 finale, it appears we have our new antagonists to go up against Harry and Kevin: Kat and Eddie in series two. "Eddie is more f****d up than we thought! Choking your own mother to death is pretty heinous. "Before the finale, I would have said Eddie's too weak/cowardly to even be mentioned in the same breath as Kat McAllister. But seeing his venomous attempts to kill his mother, I think Kat and Eddie will find their way onto some kind of team together. I think Eddie wants to destroy every Harrigan now." Another said: "Lowkey wish Conrad and Maeve could just be gone from season 2 and they would focus on Kat and if anything Eddie only. And Seraphina perhaps as an antagonist as well working with Kat." A viewer wrote: "Well Eddie didn't successfully commit matricide so it'll be interesting to see how Bella reacts during S2."
