5 best check-in suitcases: Best Picks unveils the top models for your next vacay
It's May, and that can only mean one thing for keen travellers; Euro summer is just around the corner. If you're ready to escape the cold Aussie winter and bask under the sun in Greece, Spain or France, you're going to need a trusty suitcase to transport all your essentials from A to B. While I'm a big advocate for carry-on luggage, an international trip requires a larger case for all kinds of big and bulky items that are required on a two week (or longer) vacation. Whether you're in the market for a state-of-the-art model or ready to invest in the best of the bunch, there are three things you always need to look for in a good check-in suitcase: ease of use, design and functionality. Here at Best Picks, we've rounded up the best of the bunch that will safely transport your Euro wardrobe, shoes and all. 1. Samsonite C-Lite Suitcase 75cm, $999 at Samsonite We've written about this best-seller before — and for good reason. As one of Samsonite's most popular cases, the C-Lite is designed and made in Europe, with a strong hard shell from woven Curv material, its light enough to wheel through the airport, and durable to withstand a lifetime of trips. Shoppers say the best-selling case 'delivers on durability and performance,' and is 'great for longer adventures,' thanks to the 10 year warranty giving users a peace of mind with purchase. For a limited-time, save up to 40 per cent when you spend $299 or more, and that includes the new pearl/fuchsia colourway which can be easily be spotted on the carousel. 2. July Checked Expandable, $425 at July Aussie-made luggage brand July has long been a name on our radar, and you can spot thousands of travellers wheeling the recognisable trunk-like cases at the airport. Loved by the masses, the Checked Expandable can hold 80L in size, and has plenty of hidden features to make travelling days much more easier, including the expandle function for storing a few extra additions. Inside there's a laundry bag and a heavy-duty Y strap to compress your belongings and create more space. Thanks to the telescopic handles, it's easier than ever to wheel. 'Smooth wheels, distinctive colour, and great construction, ' says one shopper. 'Love the small little details like the smoothness or the telescopic handle, and quality of zippers - impressed.' 3. Monos Check-In Large, $485 at Monos With over 2,000 reviews, the Monos Check-In is a crowd-favourite case with nine different colourways to choose from. Deemed as a 'must-have' for any long-haul trips, shoppers says the case ' rolled smoothly over rough terrain ' when transporting across uneven paths in Europe. While it's on the heavier side, the Aerospace-grade, water-resistant outer shell offers high performance and extreme durability, with 360 degree wheels making it easy to roll, and gorgeous vegan leather detailing. As an added bonus, the Monos case comes with an ion-coated laundry bag, two shoe bags and a stylish vegan leather luggage tag. 4. American Tourister Aerostep, $399 at American Tourister A big player in the luggage game, American Tourister is home to hundreds of durable and functional cases from carry-on to check-in. That includes the award-winning Aerostep, an expandable large 77cm suitcase with double wheels, mesh pockets, and a TSA combination lock. Weighing in at 3.8kg, it leaves plenty of room (and weight) for all your holiday essentials, including heavier items like shoes, books and electronics. Thanks to an epic offer, you can save 40 per cent when spending $250 or more on a new case for your overseas adventure. 5. Antler Large Luggage, $399 at Antler Home to plenty of gorgeous colourways, Antler luggage comes highly-rated and recommended by thousands of shoppers across the country. With a lifetime warranty across all cases, it's hard to look past the British brand and the stylish designs on offer, especially the Large Luggage, a 78cm travel companion. ' Bought this case to take on long haul trips. Really good build quality so will hopefully withstand some of the rough treatment it's bound to get in transit,' one shopper commented. Thanks to the silent 360 degree wheels and bespoke comfort-grip handle, 'it's incredibly lightweight yet sturdy, making it easy to maneuver through busy airports and city streets,' another agreed. There's currently two offers up for grabs: spend $399 and save up to 40 per cent off, or build your own bundle with a matching carry on case for 20 per cent off.

Keeping it all in hand
I'm about to try something I've never done before: travel with hand luggage only on an international flight. Of course, I have travelled without checked bags on short trips to Sydney and Melbourne, but never when attempting to leave the country. Travelling with just a cabin bag is a trend on social media and a popular topic in travel forums. One friend has managed to travel with hand luggage only to Hawaii and New Zealand, but others are aghast I am going to Singapore for five nights without checking a bag. There are a couple of reasons I decided to try hand luggage only. First, what's the point of a cheap Scoot flight if you then add luggage? I added food because it's dinner time and I'm not that stingy. Second, we arrive close to midnight, and I would rather be in a taxi on the way to the hotel than staring at a baggage carousel. Two weeks out from the trip, I double check if I can take an umbrella and tweezers. Yes, on both counts. I assess my existing packing cells and decide they're not fit for the job. I need compression cells. They won't reduce the weight, but I'll feel better if they look neater and smaller. After reading 963 reviews on Amazon, I decide against bags that compress with a pump and buy a zipper-down set with see-through panels so I can identify socks from shirts in the squashed carnage. These cost around $33. I also need a MagSafe magnetic power bank for my phone because my current power bank is bulky and it's not easy to take photos with it attached by cable. Cost. $27. Another 46 hours is spent reading reviews of 20cm-by-20cm clear toiletry bags before opting for a box from the supermarket. At this stage I must confess, I have added a 20kg checked bag for the return leg to share with my mum, which cost $60 at the time of booking. Savvy readers will at this point realise I have spent more than $60 trying to save on checking in a bag, if you include at least $15 on new sets of various tiny jars and bottles with labels. A few days out, I open my Singapore packing list and ruthlessly edit. But I can't adopt the trending 5, 4, 3, 2 1 method; the five tops rule doesn't factor in Singapore humidity. Crunch time. I get out my Samsonite Upscape and Antler Lincoln cabin bags and choose the Samsonite, which looks bigger but weighs slightly less, at 2.3kg compared to 2.5kg. I do a trial pack, and it clocks in around 8.5kg. My Uniqlo crossbody bag tips the scales at 2.5kg before I've even added my passport and wallet, never mind my 1.4kg laptop. When my compression cells arrive, I repack and rethink. Remove shorts. Add extra swimsuit. Pray. Now the cabin bag is up to 9kg and the 'personal item' crossbody bag is 3kg. Why is it getting heavier not lighter?! The evening before departure, I reassess everything, from what I am wearing, to every teeny tiny jar I've squeezed into my 1L liquids bag. Can I manage to get both bags down to the required 10kg? How many things can I stuff in my pockets? Even if I get the cabin bag down to 7kg and my crossbody bag under 3kg, can I lift it into an overhead locker? Should I ditch the 1kg Kmart fold-down bag that's supposed to be the checked back on the way home? Departure day has arrived and with so much work to do, travel anxiety is creeping up on me. I log in to find the cost of adding a 20kg checked bag is now $84 (I feel like it was $77 a week or two ago). On the app, it is $81. It is allowing me to add it but not pay. Online chat doesn't open until 9am, so I phone and quickly reach the most helpful airline call centre person to who I have spoken. She advises travellers can add a bag up to four hours before departure, but can't pay online if they have already checked in. I hand over my credit card details and utter a sigh more of relief than defeat. I move everything except the Kmart bag into my trusty bigger Antler hard shell case, put most of my liquids into my toiletry bag, then add my trainers and an extra pair of shorts and a T-shirt. It comes to around 12.5kg. I am no longer stressed, I don't have to worry about sweating through all my clothes within two days, and hotel room service will be available no matter when I arrive. There's also no chance of the cabin bag being taken off me and checked in for being overweight.
