Chess grandmaster at 14: Who is Nihal Sarin, the 21-year-old who refused to draw with Magnus Carlsen?
Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin has reached the Chess playoffs at the Esports World Cup 2025 in Riyadh. After losing 0–2 to Arjun Erigaisi on Day 1, he bounced back with a 2–0 win over Anish Giri. Sarin, who represents S8UL Esports, then defeated Maxime Vachier-Lagrave 1.5–0.5 to qualify from Group B. At EWC 2025, Nihal then faced five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen in the quarter-finals on July 31. The match drew attention for its tension and high-level play. In the first rapid game, Nihal managed a draw despite having only 20 seconds left. However, Carlsen later won the match 2.5–0.5 by taking the next games. One key moment came when Carlsen offered a draw in the second game, but Nihal refused. Carlsen smiled during the moment. Magnus later won that game. Though Nihal didn't reach the semifinals, his fearless performance impressed fans and experts. Nihal Sarin is one of India's top young chess players. He was born on July 13, 2004, in Thrissur, Kerala. He became a grandmaster at the age of 14 in 2018. Nihal is known for playing very fast while staying calm, even under time pressure. In 2022, he reached the final of the Global Championship, beating top players like Kramnik, Ding Liren and Anish Giri. Only Wesley So could stop him. He earned $100,000 as runner-up. That year, he also won the Tata Steel India Rapid and got a bronze medal at the FIDE Olympiad. In 2023, his FIDE rating reached 2692, placing him 44th in the world.

Galatasaray Break Transfer Record To Sign Victor Osimhen On Permanent Deal
Last Updated: The 26-year-old, who has been on loan with Galatasaray since the 2024/25 campaign, inked a four-year deal with the Turkish giants from Napoli in a deal valued at 75 million euros. Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen completed the permanent switch to Turkish champions Galatasaray on Thursday in a club record move worth around the 75 million euro mark. The 26-year-old, who has been on loan with Galatasaray since the 2024 season, inked a four-year deal with the Turkish giants from Italian champions Napoli. Osimhen, who played a crucial role in Napoli's 2023 Serie A triumph, spearheaded Galatasaray's successful title thrust in the bygone season as he netted 26 times in 30 league outings to help the Istanbul club claim their 25th Super Lig crown. 'Regarding the transfer of professional footballer Victor James Osimhen, an agreement has been reached with his club, SSCN Napoli SPA," a club statement read. 'In this context, a net transfer fee of 75,000,000 EUR will be paid to the player's former club. Additionally, under the terms of the agreement, 10% of the profit from the player's next sale will be paid to SSCN Napoli SPA," the club added. 'A 4-year contract has been signed with the player, effective from the 2025-2026 season. According to the agreement, the player will receive a net guaranteed fee of 15,000,000 EUR per season, a net loyalty bonus of 1,000,000 EUR, and an image rights fee of 5,000,000 EUR," Galatasaray clarified. Osimhen was missing from the training session at Napoli, who clinched their 4th Scudetto title under the stewardship of Antonio Conte in the 2024/25 campaign, the freshly crowned Serie A champions, at the start of the week while the fine print on his permeant switch to the Aslan were being concluded. Napoli head coach Conte seemingly did not have the 26-year-old in his plans for his side's title defence next term and negotiations with Galatasaray had been ongoing for several weeks as talks had stalled over the terms of payment for the switch. Napoli have been active in the transfer window as they have roped in Noa Lang, Lorenzo Lucca, Vanja Milinkovic-Savic, and Luca Marianucci in addition to former Manchester City starman Kevin De Buryne. view comments First Published: August 01, 2025, 08:12 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Rio Takeda and Eri Okayama lead a Japanese surge in the Women's British Open
PORTHCAWL, Wales (AP) — Rio Takeda overcame a double bogey at the turn with four birdies over her final seven holes Thursday for a 5-under 67 to share the lead with Eri Okayama in a Women's British Open that featured a Japanese surge and a mixed day for Lottie Woad. HT Image Japanese players held the top three spots at Royal Porthcawl, with Miyu Yamashita at 68. Three others were among the top 12 after an opening round in which the wind kept anyone from going low but about half the field was at par or better. Takeda, one of 20 players who have won on the LPGA Tour this year, took a double bogey on the par-5 ninth hole, only to rally over the closing hole to make up ground. Okayama, who plays the Japan LPGA, hit fairway metal to 12 feet on No. 17 for her final birdie. Woad started the month as the No. 1 amateur in women's golf. She won on the Ladies European Tour, missed a playoff by one shot in an LPGA major and then won the Women's Scottish Open against a strong field in her pro debut. She was the betting favorite at the final major of the year and did well to stay in the mix with a birdie on the par-5 18th for an even-par 72. Woad played alongside defending champion Lydia Ko (73) and Lilia Vu, a double major winner from two years ago, who had a 74. 'Had a good amount of birdies, just a few poor bogeys on the front nine that could have definitely been avoided,' Woad said. 'Nice to finish on par and birdie the last. It's one of those rounds that could have definitely gotten away from me. I am happy how I hung in there and got a decent round together.' Nelly Korda, whose No. 1 ranking she has held for the last 16 months is in jeopardy, had an early bogey and kept a clean card the rest of the way, adding three birdies for a 70. Much like Woad, that round could have produced a much higher score if not for a series of key pars, none bigger than Korda's 12-footer on No. 16. 'Sometimes you have to get lucky when you make the wrong decision. You kind of have to bail yourself out,' said Korda, still looking for her first win this year after seven titles last season. Korda and Woad played in the afternoon, when the wind began to blow harder off the Bristol Channel, and faced a quick turnaround before starting the second round in the morning. Mao Saigo, who won the first LPGA major of the year at the Chevron Championship, and Riviera Maya Open winner Chisato Iwai were in the large group at 69. That also included Mimi Rhodes of England, who leads the LET money list with three titles. Rhodes grew up playing across the Bristol Channel, and she came over a month ago to see Royal Porthcawl ahead of her first Women's British Open. The wind was strong that day, which made Thursday feel more manageable. 'The members told me it was the windiest they'd ever seen it, so I played it like with a lot of wind,' Rhodes said. 'So yeah, maybe I played it when it was at its toughest and now I just think it's easier.' ___ AP golf:
