Police continue to probe woman's death on ferry from Fishguard
POLICE in Ireland have said they are not investigating any alleged public order offences on board a ferry following the death of a woman travelling from Fishguard to Rosslare on Tuesday.
Wexford Gardai are investigating the circumstances around the "unexplained" death of a woman on board a Stena Line crossing to Rosslare on February 25.
It had been confirmed that the woman was pronounced dead on board the ferry, and a man was arrested.
A post mortem examination is currently being carried out at Waterford University Hospital, which will determine the nature and course of the investigation, a Garda Síochána spokesperson said.
'A man arrested in connection with the investigation remains currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at a Garda Station in the Eastern Region,' the Garda spokesperson said.
'A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and a Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to provide support and information to the deceased's family.
'An Garda Síochána is not investigating any separate alleged public order incidents on board this ferry sailing.
'Investigations are ongoing.'

A spokesperson for Stena Line said: 'An incident occurred on the 2pm sailing from Fishguard to Rosslare.
"This a police matter."
Further sailings on the Fishguard to Rosslare ferry route were cancelled following the incident.
The next Stena Line crossing will be at 7.30pm on Wednesday, February 26 from Rosslare, with the next crossing from Fishguard taking place at 1.30am on Thursday.
Rosslare Europort said all other services are operating as normal.
Speaking to the PA news agency, Wexford councillor Ger Carthy said locals reacted with 'shock and sadness' at the news.
'I think the reaction here locally was one of shock and indeed sadness at what transpired on board the Stena Nordica en route to Rosslare Port here and the tragic events that unfolded,' he said.
'What transpired here last night and the response that was given by the gardai and the state agencies was second to none. There was a large presence here of specialist units and indeed the national ambulance and a large number of vehicles at the scene.'

Exonerated US death row inmate turned campaigner dies in Irish house fire
Sadness has been expressed after former US death row inmate turned campaigner Sunny Jacobs died following a fire in Ireland. The 77-year-old yoga teacher who was originally from New York was found dead following the blaze at the Sunny Healing Centre in rural Co Galway. 'Both bodies were taken to the mortuary at University Hospital Galway for post-mortem examinations, while the scene was preserved for a technical probe,' they said. 'The results of the post-mortem examinations will inform the direction of garda inquiries.' A statement on Ms Jacobs' campaign website confirmed she had died in the incident, along with her caretaker. 'We don't have many details at this time, but investigation is ongoing and our contacts in Galway are providing us with information as it comes in,' they said. 'Sunny was a fierce advocate for justice and a guiding light for many. 'As someone who survived wrongful conviction – including five years in solitary confinement under a sentence of death, and 17 years of imprisonment total – she knew the difficulties of incarceration and the struggle to regain one's footing after being exonerated and released.' They said that Ms Jacobs, along with her late husband Peter Pringle, established The Sunny Centre to help other exonerees through the difficult process of building new lives after being released from prison. 'Together, they brought many exonerees to the centre in Ireland to help them process their trauma and move forward to the next steps of their healing,' they said. 'During and after the pandemic, they continued to support and counsel exonerees remotely by video and phone. 'After Peter's passing in 2022, Sunny continued the work of The Sunny Centre. She hosted exonerees and started a training programme for those who wanted to carry forward her vision to establish similar centres for exonerees within their communities.' The statement concluded: 'Fair winds and full sails on your crossing, Sunny. Your memory is a blessing to us.'

Man dead and girl injured following shooting incident at Carlow shopping centre
A man has died following a shooting incident at a shopping centre in Co Carlow. The PA news agency understands that it appears that the dead man's wounds were self-inflicted. A young girl was also injured in the incident but did not require hospital care. Gardai have identified the dead man as a white Irish male. Ireland's Justice Minister Jim O'Callaghan has described it as a 'really shocking incident'. One local councillor told how people ran terrified from the shopping centre in Carlow town as shots were fired. The body of the man remains at the scene and will not be removed until the area has been declared safe. The shopping centre has been evacuated and emergency services remain at the scene, but gardai said there is no further concern for public safety. A Garda spokesperson said they were alerted to reports of a firearm discharge at Fairgreen Shopping Centre shortly after 6.15pm. The spokesperson said: 'An Garda Siochana are currently at the scene, with the shopping centre and car park cordoned off. 'The cordon will remain in place overnight. 'A white Irish adult male is deceased at the scene. 'The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team has been requested to attend.' The spokesperson added: 'A female juvenile received treatment from paramedics following the incident but did not require hospital care. 'It's undetermined at this time as to how those injuries were sustained.' Gardai have asked that anyone who may have recorded footage of the incident not share it on social media platforms or messaging apps, but instead provide it to Carlow Garda Station. Ireland's deputy premier, Simon Harris, said he was 'deeply concerned' to hear about the incident and was being kept briefed. 'People were obviously terrified, a bank holiday Sunday, going into town to do their shopping. 'People ran from the centre crying and upset. 'There was a bunch of foreign students in the area, who could not believe they were caught up in the middle of all of it. 'It's a busy spot. We launched a photographic exhibition there on Friday night in the shopping centre.' Mr Browne added: 'There is lots of activity in the centre between people shopping and people working there, exhibitions. 'You could not make it up. It's very upsetting for everyone who was involved in it or who witnessed it. 'I was down there in the last hour and it seems to have calmed down a good bit now.' The release added, "On Saturday afternoon, 17th May 2025, State Pathologist, Dr Sally Anne Collis and Forensic Anthropologist Laureen Buckley assisted by the Garda Technical Bureau have carried out preliminary examinations at the scene." "An Garda Síochána can confirm that partial human remains have been found," police continued. "Searches are ongoing to recover any further human remains," the post added. "DNA analysis will be required to carry out formal identification of the recovered human remains." When asked about the reports that the human remans were found in liquid manure spread across Mr. Gaines' farm, police told PEOPLE, "An Garda Síochána does not comment on ongoing or potential lines of enquiry of active investigations. An Garda Síochána does not comment on statements made by third parties." Police also confirmed in a statement obtained by PEOPLE that a man in his 50s had been arrested and remained detained as of Monday, May 19. "On Sunday afternoon, 18th May 2025 a male (aged in his 50s) has been arrested on suspicion of murder," the statement added.
