Guardians' Ownership Succession Plan Is Solid—a Rarity in U.S. Sports
Oftentimes in U.S. sports, the death of a long-time franchise owner is followed immediately by questions about estate planning, succession intentions and the club's long-term ownership. The death of 94-year-old Larry Dolan on Monday is unlikely to spark that uncertainty for the Cleveland Guardians.
David Blitzer, who became a minority partner in the MLB team in 2022, is holding a path to control that he acquired as part of his investment. As Sportico previously reported, the deal gives Blitzer the pre-priced opportunity to buy control of the Guardians roughly six years after his initial investment. In the meantime, the club will continue to be owned by the Dolan family and run by Larry's son Paul, who has been the club's primary control person since 2013.

'Nothing changes,' a team spokesperson said Monday night in an email. He declined to comment on the specifics of Blitzer's deal. A rep for Blitzer also declined to comment.
Should Blitzer execute his option, it would be a tidy change of ownership for the Guardians, in contrast to what we've seen from a number of sports franchises recently. The Denver Broncos sold in 2022 because the family of late owner Pat Bowlen could not agree on a successor. The family of late Padres owner Peter Seidler is currently in court fighting over control of the MLB team. The death of longtime Chicago Bears owner Virginia McCaskey in early February has spurred all sorts of questions about whether her family can maintain ownership of the team while remaining compliant with the NFL's ownership rules. The Baltimore Orioles sold last year on the eve of Peter Angelos' death following disagreements between his children. The Boston Celtics are currently on the market as a result of estate planning for Irving Grousbeck, who is around 90 years old.
The Dolan family bought the Guardians, then nicknamed the Indians, from Dick Jacobs in 2000 for $323 million. Larry Dolan was the brother of Cablevision founder Charles Dolan, and uncle to Jim Dolan, owner of the New York Knicks and New York Rangers. Paul took over control of the franchise in 2013.
The team is currently worth $1.48 billion, according to Sportico's number. Over the 25 years, that's a compound annual growth rate of about 6.28%. That's roughly on par with what an investment in the S&P 500 would have grown to, without dividends reinvested ($1.35 billion). With dividends reinvested, $323 million put into the stock index in late 1999 would be $2.1 billion today.
Blitzer, the chairman of Blackstone's tactical opportunities group, is the only person Sportico is aware of who has investments in all five major U.S. sports leagues. He is the co-owner with Josh Harris in the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils; an investor in MLS club Real Salt Lake; an investor in the NFL's Washington Commanders; and a minority partner in the Guardians. The Guardians were the fifth and final piece to that achievement.
Blitzer's Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment has other sports holdings in its portfolio, including a minority stake in Premier League club Crystal Palace and sports consultancy Elevate. His sports-focused family office, Bolt Ventures, also owns a number of soccer teams in Europe.Best of Sportico.com

Why American Express Stock Bumped Higher on Monday
American Express is giving its Platinum cards an update. Management promised more features and perks, details of which should be provided in the coming months. 10 stocks we like better than American Express › With news of upcoming changes to its most popular product, American Express (NYSE: AXP) was a winner on the stock market as the trading week began. The company's shares increased more than 2% in value on Monday, more than double the 0.9% percentage gain of the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC). Before market open, AmEx announced a series of major updates to its premium Platinum Card, a bonus-packed card that is its No. 1 product. The catch is, that won't occur right away. AmEx said in a fairly brief press release that more details would be forthcoming in the fall. It did not provide more detail. In fact, detail was quite sparse in the press release. The payment card giant didn't get specific at all regarding changes and adjustments to its popular Member Rewards program. It only went as far as to quote its group president of U.S. consumer services Howard Grosfield as saying, "We're going to take these cards to a new level, not only in what they offer in travel, dining, and lifestyle benefits, but also in how they look and feel, to meet the evolving needs of our customers." AmEx did, however, offer a few clues within its communication. In the travel sphere, it boasted that qualifying card "members" can potentially access more than 1,550 airport lounges throughout the world. More are on the way; the company said it will open its Centurion Lounges in airports located in Newark, New Jersey; Salt Lake City, Utah; and across the Pacific Ocean in Tokyo. It's likely the company will spruce up at least a few existing lounges, too. Management also touted AmEx's continued investment in dining and hotel options, so we can imagine the company boosting these offerings for cardholders as well. The credit card space is becoming ever more competitive, with issuers scrambling to offer more and better perks. This is AmEx's wheelhouse, and as the master of perks, it's comforting to see the company still considers them a priority. Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures fall as Trump calls for evacuation of Iran's capital amid escalating strikes
US stock futures fell with investors on edge as Israel and Iran continued to trade strikes against a backdrop of shifting US trade policy and stubborn interest rates. Futures attached to the Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F) fell 0.2%. Futures attached to the benchmark S&P 500 (ES=F) and the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 (NQ=F) stumbled 0.3%. On Monday evening, Trump called for the evacuation of Iran's capital city, Tehran, as Israel pledged to continue attacking the country. "Iran should have signed the 'deal' I told them to sign," the president wrote on Truth Social. "IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON," he continued, closing with, "everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran!" Trump's latest comments add to confusion about whether a cessation of hostilities is possible in the near term. Earlier in the day, Trump urged Iran to resume negotiations on its nuclear program "before it's too late." Stocks fluctuated on Monday but ended on a high note after The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran does, in fact, seek to strike a ceasefire with Israel and return to the negotiation table on its nuclear program. The news temporarily eased some fears that the conflict could unfurl into a regional war, and oil prices slid, but uncertainty as to where the fast-moving conflict will go next persists. While the situation between Iran and Israel dominated market moves on Monday, concerns over Trump's trade policy and the direction of interest rates lurked in the background. As the deadline for Trump's pause on his most sweeping tariffs approaches, his administration is meeting with key trading partners at the G7 summit in Canada in hopes of striking deals. The first completed deal emerged Monday, after Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said they had signed the trade agreement they had landed on last month. Read more: The latest on Trump's tariffs Even with the tariff pause in place as negotiations take shape, however, Trump's trade policy has rattled retail sales and consumer confidence. On Tuesday, Investors will get fresh insight into how retail is faring amid tariff uncertainty with the May retail sales report, which is due for release at 8:30 a.m. ET. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve is set to issue its next decision on interest rates on Wednesday. A consistent refrain from policymakers this year has been that tariffs represent a stumbling block in terms of issuing interest rate cuts due to the potential for an uptick in inflation. New signs of cooling inflation, consequently, aren't expected to convince the central bank to change directions; policymakers are expected to hold rates steady Wednesday.
