Just because someone's sentiment hurt, movie, stand up comedy can't be stopped, says SC on Thug life ban
The top court also questioned the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) for seeking an apology from veteran actor Kamal Haasan over his remark that Kannada was born out of Tamil.
"We cannot allow this to happen. Just because of an opinion, should a movie be stopped? A stand-up comedy should be stopped? Recital of a poem should be stopped?," the bench asked.
However, counsel for KFCC said that they did not issue any threats but only issued a letter that there was widespread protests across the state and kindly consider issuing an apology.
The KFCC counsel that the mob entered their offices and after that they had issued a letter.
Justice Bhuyan asked if KFCC had made any complaint to the police in this regard.
"You actually succumbed to mob pressure. Did you go to the police? No.
That means you have no complaints against them. You are just hiding behind them," he observed.
The KFCC counsel said that they would abide by any order passed by the court.
Counsel appearing for Kamal Haasan's RajKamal Film International Ltd, one of the producers of the film, said though they had lost Rs 30 crore (in revenue) so far, they had no problems if the state agreed to provide security for screening of the film.
The top court was hearing a PIL filed by one M Mahesh Reddy seeking directions to allow the screening of 'Thug Life', which was not released in Karnataka after Haasan's remarks.
Advocate A Velan, appearing for Reddy, said the state did not take any action against the persons who issued threats against the film and that its affidavit was silent on the issue.
He referred to the apex court's slew of guidelines on mob violence and hate speeches, which the state was bound to follow in the present case.
The counsel for the state assured action against those issuing threats against the film's release.

Sitaare Zameen Par box office prediction: Early estimates not in sync with Aamir Khan's stardom, says expert
Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan returns to the big screen after a gap of three years. His long absence could lead to one of two outcomes – either a massive turnout at the box office from eager fans, or the risk that audiences may have forgotten the unique magic only Aamir brings to the screen. Ahead of its Friday release, Livemint reached out to industry analyst Taran Adarsh for his early box office predictions. It seems Aamir Khan's spiritual sequel to Taare Zameen Par might see an opening business of a single digit. According to the industry tracker Sacnilk, as of 9 pm Thursday, Sitaare Zameen Par collected ₹ 2.21 crore from the advance booking. Considering blocked seats, the film's revenue now stands at ₹ 5.59 crore after selling over 79,000 tickets so far. Taran Adarsh weighed in, 'The advance booking is not in sync with the star status of Aamir Khan. Yes, the advances should have been better because Aamir Khan returns to the big screen after a big gap with his own production, starring in it. It should have been better.' 'I genuinely believe Sitaare Zameen Par is a word-of-mouth film. It should grow with word of mouth,' he added. Sitaare Zameen Par will be screened in 8,747 shows across India. The film will be released in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. Releasing on 20 June, the film sees no major clash at the ticket window. Adarsh points out, 'The film enjoys the advantage of a solo release. Right now, it's a wait and watch." "Not just Aamir, but the entire industry is looking at it because this is something that has not happened in the past. People sign lucrative contracts with digital players, and depending on how the film fares, after 10–12 weeks or maybe later, they premiere it on a digital platform. We will be looking at it closely. The screening was a star-studded affair as Rekha, Javed Akhtar, Shabana Azmi, Vicky Kaushal, Jeetendra, Tushar Kapoor, Kriti Kharbanda, Sunny Kaushal, and Tiger Shroff, among others, marked their attendance. The entire cast and crew of the film, including Aamir, Genelia D'Souza and director RS Prasanna, were spotted wearing Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla on the red carpet. Rekha made everyone's head turn, as she was escorted by Aamir and Vicky to pose for the paparazzi. Besides Aamir's girlfriend Gauri Spratt, Tisca Chopra and Darsheel Safary, who were a part of Aamir's 2007 film Taare Zameen Par, also attended the screening.
