Steve Burns reflects on early struggles with pay during Blue's Clues, shares his path to fame
In an interview with Rainn Wilson on the May 1 episode of the Soul Boom podcast, Burns admitted that his pay for hosting the beloved Nickelodeon children's series was "grim" for a long time.
Despite the fame Blue's Clues brought him, Burns revealed that he made less money than many waiters he knew in the early seasons of the show. "Every waiter I ever knew made more money than I did for the first many seasons," Burns said. For much of that time, Burns relied on his voiceover work for commercials to support himself, which he described as his primary income. He even lived in a hallway in a New York City apartment while managing his Blue's Clues duties as a "side hustle."
Burns also shared his initial hesitation about the role, recalling that he had no intention of becoming the host. He had originally thought the audition was for a voiceover gig and had never considered working in children's television. 'If I had known that it was to be the guy on the show, I wouldn't have gone,' he said. Despite his reluctance, Burns ultimately decided to go for it, using his acting training from the esteemed Uta Hagen to give the audition his best effort.
Burns hosted Blue's Clues from 1996 to 2002. After his departure, Donovan Patton took over as the on-screen host, and the show was later revived with Josh Dela Cruz as the new host in Blue's Clues & You!, with Burns making occasional appearances.

Drake Bell finalises divorce from Janet Von Schmeling two years after separation
Drake Bell is officially proceeding with his divorce from Janet Von Schmeling, two years after the couple first separated. Court records confirm that the Drake & Josh actor filed documents in Seminole County, Florida, on Thursday to move the process forward. Von Schmeling originally filed for divorce in Los Angeles in April 2023, citing irreconcilable differences. At the time, she revealed that she and Bell had separated in September 2022 and requested legal and physical custody of their child, along with spousal support. Her filing came one week after Bell was briefly reported missing and later located. Bell's representative, Juan José Rovirosa, issued a statement explaining the development: "At this stage, both of them are simply concluding that legal process. Their priority remains the safety and wellbeing of their son, and they are doing so from a place of love and respect.' Bell married Von Schmeling in 2018 but did not publicly confirm the marriage until 2021, when he also revealed that they share a son together. Earlier this year, Bell shared in an interview that he has a new girlfriend but admitted balancing a relationship is challenging while touring. The actor has remained in the spotlight through personal and professional revelations, including his participation on The Masked Singer as the Ice King and his role in the docuseries Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV, where he identified himself as a survivor of abuse at Nickelodeon.

Jason Reitman exits 'I'm Glad My Mom Died' series over creative differences with Jennette McCurdy
Jennifer Aniston's upcoming Apple TV+ limited series I'm Glad My Mom Died, based on Jennette McCurdy's bestselling memoir, is now at risk of being put on hold indefinitely after director Jason Reitman unexpectedly exited the project. Photo: AFP Reitman, known for Juno and Up in the Air, reportedly left following creative disagreements with McCurdy, who also serves as showrunner. The 10-episode drama-comedy is produced by Aniston who is set to portray Debra McCurdy, Jennette's late mother. Despite being backed by a strong production team, including Margot Robbie, Jerrod Carmichael, and Sharon Horgan, producers now have just two weeks to secure a new director. Sources told Puck that Reitman's departure followed a dispute that turned 'disrespectful,' as he aimed for a more comedic tone than McCurdy found appropriate. Although the memoir includes humour, it primarily deals with serious issues, including McCurdy's abuse allegations against her mother and former Nickelodeon producer Dan Schneider. McCurdy's book, released in 2022, quickly topped the New York Times bestsellers list and gained widespread attention for its honest depiction of childhood trauma and industry exploitation.
