Late M. Daud Kilau's Clothing Among Items Collected In Perak Music Archives

IPOH, April 21 (Bernama) -- Several pieces of clothing belonging to the legendary singer, the late Datuk M. Daud Kilau, are among the 2,000 items collected and will undergo digitisation by the Perak Music Archives which was established through the People of Remarkable Talent (PORT) since 2022.
Perak Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah said this effort is hoped to become a reference source for the community, especially for cultural researchers and art students.
He said the state government aims to launch the archives' website in July this year.
"Regarding the proposal for the development of the PORT Creative Centre, we are currently in negotiations on this matter involving the Management Services Division, Public Works Department, Lands and Mines Office and several other parties," he said.
He said this when winding up the debate on the royal address at the State Legislative Assembly sitting here today.
On Dec 18, 2023, the veteran singer known as Raja Gelek Malaysia passed away at the age of 83 at the Teluk Intan Hospital due to old age.
The late artist was famous for his performances in eye-catching self-stitched sequined outfits.
Meanwhile, Khairudin also mentioned that the recognition of Ipoh City as a Creative City of Music by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) at the end of 2023 was based on data, information and programmes by PORT.
"Several invitation opportunities to promote the state's talent have been taken, such as recently, PORT showcased traditional musicians at the Ambonia Music Fest in Ambon, Indonesia as well as Suphanburi Cultural Festival in Suphanburi, Thailand," he added.

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Bernama) -- Journalism students and those aspiring to enter the media industry are invited to the HAWANA 2025 Carnival, a three-day event starting tomorrow at Sunway Putra Mall here, to gain first-hand exposure to the field. Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj the carnival, held in conjunction with the National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebration, marked a historic milestone as it brought together all mainstream media agencies in the country under one programme. 'For the first time, we are organising a carnival involving all media agencies to showcase the development of local media. It might be difficult to visit each media agency individually, so we are bringing them together here,' he said when met by reporters after inspecting preparations for the HAWANA 2025 celebration at the World Trade Centre (WTC) Kuala Lumpur and Sunway Putra Mall today. Arul Rajoo, who is also the HAWANA 2025 Project director, said the carnival would, among other things, give visitors the opportunity to try their hand at newsreading, offering valuable insight into the media industry. 'This is a great opportunity for the public, as each media agency will feature its own activities; in addition, (visitors) will have the chance to meet newsreaders and experience what it's like to read the news or host a programme,' he said. Among the participating media companies are Astro, TV AlHijrah, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), and digital portals such as RotiKaya and Vanakkam Malaysia, in addition to media agencies from Sabah and Sarawak. The HAWANA 2025 Carnival, to be held from tomorrow until Sunday, will feature various programmes, including the Bernama mini-conti, pocket talks, Bernama services, digital newspaper giveaways by the New Straits Times Press Berhad, quizzes, and a news reading challenge by Media Prima Berhad. There will also be lucky draws, colouring contests for children and the screening of a promotional video for the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission's (MCMC) Safe Internet Campaign. Themed 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', the HAWANA 2025 celebration will also include the HAWANA Media Forum, which will be held tomorrow to provide insights into the latest developments in the local media industry.

Modern twist takes traditional wayang kulit to global stage
CONCERNS over the declining popularity of wayang kulit, Malaysia's traditional shadow puppetry, have spurred three artists to innovate, ensuring the heritage art remains relevant, especially among the young. Founded in 2012 by Muhammad Dain Othman, Tintoy Chuo and Teh Take Huat, Fusion Wayang Kulit merges traditional Kelantanese wayang kulit with modern elements, introducing new narratives and iconic pop culture characters to captivate contemporary audiences. Muhammad Dain, a 13th-generation Tok Dalang (puppet master) of traditional Kelantanese wayang kulit, explained that shifting audience interests drove their innovation while steadfastly preserving the art form's original structure. 'Kelantanese wayang kulit is fading due to a lack of interest, especially among young people. If this continues, the art may eventually disappear. 'So, we thought, why not do something to keep the art form alive,' he told Bernama at Fusion Wayang Kulit gallery in GMBB in Jalan Robertson, Kuala Lumpur. Fusion Wayang Kulit combines traditional Kelantan wayang kulit elements with a modern touch by introducing new storytelling and iconic characters from popular culture to attract audiences. — Bernama Fusion Wayang Kulit's journey into modern characters began with the Star Wars franchise, featuring puppets of Darth Vader, Skywalker, Princess Leia and Stormtroopers. Their debut performance in 2013 was a resounding success, opening doors for international showcases in Australia, China, Germany and Japan. Muhammad Dain, 73, stressed that despite incorporating modern elements, they remained committed to the traditional Kelantanese wayang kulit format, maintaining its five key characteristics of music, language/ dialogue, performance, puppetry and characters. He explained that they modified the 'outside story' segment of the show, a portion separate from the core narrative, which allows the Tok Dalang to adapt content to current contexts without altering the main storyline. His team also conducts workshops to train the younger generation in wayang kulit. Initially, Fusion Wayang Kulit faced resistance from some traditionalists who feared their innovations compromised authenticity. However, clear explanations led to understanding and acceptance. 'I have received support from international experts who agree that incorporating new elements does not undermine the fundamental principles of Kelantanese wayang kulit,' said Muhammad Dain, who has been involved in the art since the 1980s. To date, Fusion Wayang Kulit has created shadow puppet designs inspired by DC superheroes (Justice League), Sony PlayStation video games (Horizon Forbidden West, God of War), Japanese mecha (Evangelion, Gundam) as well as Japanese tokusatsu (Ultraman, Kamen Rider). The group's foray into modern characters began with the 'Star Wars' franchise, featuring puppets of Darth Vader and Skywalker among others. They also developed the world's first transforming wayang kulit puppets, inspired by the Macross anime series. The Fusion Wayang Kulit team, comprising about 20 members, has performed in Austria, China, Germany, Japan, Singapore and Thailand. They were even invited to lecture at Pixar Animation Studios in California, US. 'Performing abroad is a step towards introducing Malaysia's cultural heritage to a wider audience,' said Muhammad Dain. 'We want wayang kulit to thrive, not just be a distant memory. Our hope is to inspire more people to revive and elevate this art form to a global level.'
