Longhorns trio named to Bronko Nagurski Trophy watch list
For Hill, this is familiar territory. The Longhorns' star EDGE was also named to the preseason watch list last year. He showed why during the regular season, leading the team in total tackles with 103 and forced fumbles with four. Due to his play, the Kansas native added to his trophy case. That included SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week accolades on Oct.14th and Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct.15th.
For Simmons, this is the first time his name has been connected to the Bronco Nagurski award. He is coming off a stellar freshman season in which he led the Longhorns in sacks with nine. He finished second on the team in quarterback hurries with nine and forced fumbles with three. The Texas native made history as he became the first Longhorn to win the Shaun Alexander National Freshman of the Year award.
Rounding out the list is Taaffe, who has become one of the best defensive backs in the nation. The former walk-on started every game last season, finishing with 78 total tackles. He also made life difficult for quarterbacks with 10 pass deflections. Over the last few years, he has become a staple in Steve Sarkisian's defense and turned himself into a legitimate NFL prospect.
While the Longhorns trio has made headlines with their play, they do face the competition. The Bronko Nagurski Trophy is presented annually to the nation's top defensive player, and rankings will change over the next few months. Luckily for Texas, they have a good track record with this honor. Last year, Jahdae Barron was one of four finalists. In 2014, former Longhorns star Malcom Brown was a finalist, and in 2008, Brian Orakpo took home the honors. Regardless of how the award plays out, the Longhorns' talented trio is poised to do big things and build on what have already been unforgettable college careers.

Ryan Wingo steps into the WR1 role in Austin this season with Matthew Golden moving on. After a strong freshman season, can he continue to develop into a true star for the Longhorns? We are four weeks out from Longhorn football getting underway and today we are going to talk about the presumed WR1, Ryan Wingo. Wingo was a top receiver prospect in the 2024 class and Texas was able to win the commitment late in the process over Missouri. He burst onto the scene immediately in 2024, with a number of explosive plays in his freshman year, that set the bar for an explosive sophomore season. 2024 Stats: 29 catches, 472 yards(16.3 yards/catch), 2 TDs The freshman WR group around the country last year was special. Jeremiah Smith led the way at Ohio State, but Ryan Williams(Alabama), Bryant Wesco(Clemson) and more stole the show as well. That left Wingo underdiscussed compared to his peers a year ago, largely because of the options around him. Matthew Golden, Isaiah Bond and Gunnar Helm took the lion's share of the targets a year ago, but when Wingo got the ball in his hands, the ability was immediately clear. He walks into the 2025 season without Golden or Bond in the room and as the second most experienced WR on the team, behind DeAndre Moore Jr. He is widely expected to be the go-to guy for Arch Manning early and often this year. The two scores Wingo had a year ago came in games Arch Manning was under center, against UTSA and ULM. The rapport between the two is very clear in a short period of time. This question that many people around the sport have about Texas this year is the replacement of those pass catchers. Ryan Wingo could make a lot of that a non-issue if he elevates his game to the level of Jeremiah Smith and Ryan Williams in 2025. The talent level is beyond question, with remarkable speed with the ball in his hands, great 50/50 ball ability and plus route running. Expecting a big year out of sophomore WR Ryan Wingo in rising crossers and deep shots were a strength a year ago and certainly fit the strengths of Arch Manning at QB. Wingo is one of the most important players for the Longhorns in 2025. The pass game will need a true WR1 throughout the season to reach its potential. I believe, along with a number of others, that Ryan Wingo can become that and more. The mix of the opportunity with many guys moving on, Arch Manning and his confidence together and his unique ability will give way for a huge year for Wingo. Texas has major questions when it comes to the pass catchers on this team, with tons of new names taking over big roles. Ryan Wingo will be the one among that group that is expected to be the gamechanger. It seems Sarkisian and co. have all the confidence in the world he can do that, with only one portal addition at the WR position. Texas will lose at Florida according to CBS Sports
Texas has a challenging schedule. It's not the hardest in the SEC by any means. But it's also not the easiest. UT has several tough games on the road in 2025. Texas opens at Ohio State. They face OU in Dallas. They will travel to Georgia. And they go to the Swamp to take on Florida, where they will suffered their first loss of the season according to CBS Sports. Last year, the Gators had an up and down year. There were a lot of rumors head coach Billy Napier was going to get fired midway through the season. The Gators lost to rival Miami, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Georgia and Texas. But then Florida showed signs of life. UF upset LSU and Ole Miss and Napier saved his job. The Gators have one of the best quarterbacks the Longhorns will face in DJ Lagway. Lagway was hurt when Texas hosted Florida last season. Florida's rising sophomore quarterback made big plays in Florida's two upset wins and some have called Lagway the most important individual player in the country. His play would be the big reason Florida beats Texas, if it happens. The schedule is too treacherous compared to last season, and The Swamp could be a nightmare this fall for visiting teams. Transfer special teamers named to preseason award watchlists
Texas special teams was a huge talking point during the latter parts of last season. The Longhorns special teams unit was the worst in the playoff field, according to ESPN's SP+. It showed up in huge moments, with multiple missed kicks against Georgia in the SEC title and against Arizona State in the Peach Bowl. Sarkisian and company made a concerted effort to fix that problem in the portal, adding one of the top punters and kickers in the portal. Jack Bouwmeester comes in from Utah to take over the punting duties and Mason Shipley arrives from Texas State as the expected starting kicker for the Horns. Bouwmeester was placed on the Ray Guy Award watchlist on Friday. The Ray Guy Award recognizes the best punter in the country every year, an award that Michael Dickson won for Texas in 2017. Bouwmeester is coming off a year where he averaged 44.7 yards/punt a year ago at Utah, which would improve Texas' mark from 2024 by 15 yards/punt. Bouwmeester also dropped 23 of 60 punts a year ago inside the 20-yard line, with only 4 touchbacks. As for the kicking side, Mason Shipley was placed on the Lou Groza Award watchlist. Shipley was a spring portal addition from Texas State and is set to compete with Will Stone for the kicking duties this year. Shipley went 15-19 on FGs a year ago, not missing from inside 30 yards and 60-yarder. That comes off a year where he didn't miss a kick, going a perfect 15-15 in 2023. A year ago, Texas kickers went 16-25(64%) on FGs, so the addition of Shipley should improve that drastically. Texas has had winners of both the Ray Guy and Lou Groza award winners, but during the 2024 run, there were a number of times where special teams let them down. Bringing in Jack Bouwmeester and Mason Shipley should give a boost to the Longhorns special teams unit. Special teams is often the decider in National Championship runs and Texas went out and got two guys that figure to be pieces in those major moments in 2025.
