In a bold move into production financing, Austin's Fantastic Fest is celebrating its 20th anniversary by partnering with new genre label Chroma to launch Fantastic Pitches.
Ahbra Perry has been appointed vice president of Chroma, which is dedicated to the global distribution, acquisition and production of bold, visionary genre cinema.

A champion of distinctive genre movies, Perry is the former head of Alamo on Demand, also served as director of Giant Pictures OTT channels and theatrical acquisitions for Drafthouse Films.
Supported by a team of experienced distribution executives, Perry, in her new role, will oversee Chroma's slate and spearhead production efforts, with a focus on elevating filmmakers working with smaller budgets and creative visions aiming to support the next wave of independent genre cinema.
'We're at a turning point for the future of independent cinema, and launching Chroma to champion emerging talent feels like the right move at the right moment,' said Perry. 'We eat, breathe, and sleep genre—and the filmmakers we work with do too. Every project we take on is, in its own way, fantastic,' she added. 'That's why this partnership with Fantastic Fest couldn't be more perfect – it's built to serve the artists we love and the ones we haven't met yet.'
Films should be independent productions and shot in English, though projects are accepted from any part of the world. Submissions for feature film pitches will be open from June 16 through Aug. 8. Finalists will attend a live pitching event held in Austin, Texas at the festival, judged by a panel ofindustry experts who will announce a winner onsite.
Fantastic Pitches invites ideas for micro-budget genre feature ideas. The winning pitch team at this year's Fantastic Fest will receive $100,000 in funding to complete their film, a guaranteed world premiere at Fantastic Fest 2026 and global all-rights distribution through Chroma, which is backed by Narrative Distribution.
'Over the past 20 years, Fantastic Fest has been proud to launch the careers of hundreds of filmmakers. The new partnership with Chroma champions the future of independent genre cinema — closing out Cannes with purpose and vision,' said Fantastic Festival Director Lisa Dreyer.
As genre production ramps up around the world, largely a push phenomenon driven by a new generation of filmmakers, the Fantastic Pitches sees the festival dipping a big toe in project development. To date, Fantastic Fest has not had a project showcase nor a formal market.
The Pitches are 'hopefully the first step in building that,' Dreyer told Variety at Cannes. 'There's so much genre getting made and with the success of titles such as 'The Substance,' people are seeing its commercial value,' she added.
'The box office just proves that people want to see genre films. We're seeing amazingly creative genre films coming out. There's never enough art in the world, and genre film is part of that,' she said.
Yet 'it's still extraordinary for many small films to get any kind of distribution,' Perry noted.'Every year we see so many amazing films, you know, films that play Sundance, you know, they can't even get distribution,' said Dreyer.
'Chroma can help with the production, guiding filmmakers to states where they can get tax rebates in order to really stretch that $100,000,' she added. The whole point of the Fantastic Pitches is to just really help these filmmakers and then have the world premiere at Fantastic Fest. But we'e rewriting the playbook on how independent genre films get made – from pitch to premiere.'

‘The Phoenician Scheme' Reviews: Do Critics Buy Into Wes Anderson's Comedy?

Featuring a screenplay by Anderson and Roman Coppola, the offbeat comedy follows the story of European businessman Zsa-zsa Korda (Del Toro) and his only daughter and sole heir, a nun named Sister Liesel (Threapleton), who are each being targeted by assassins and schemers. As of Friday, Rotten Tomatoes critics have collectively given The Phoenician Scheme a 78% 'fresh' rating based on 185 reviews. The RT Critics Consensus for the film reads, 'A caper made with all the intricacy of a Rube Goldberg machine, The Phoenician Scheme doesn't deviate from Wes Anderson's increasingly ornate style but delivers the formula with mannered delicacy.' Audiences on RT gave the film a 73% 'fresh' score on the critic aggregation site's Popcornmeter based on 100-plus verified user ratings. Kyle Smith of The Wall Street Journal is among the top critics on RT who gives The Phoenician Scheme a 'fresh' rating on RT, writing, 'Given that The Phoenician Scheme essentially concludes by saying, as some of the director's other movies did, 'Forgive your ridiculous dad for his failings,' its major attraction is the whimsy with which it is decorated, or suffused, or infested.' Also giving The Phoenician Scheme a 'fresh' take on RT is Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post, who writes, "At its fleeting best — in its meditation on the transactional and the transcendent — this one feels like it's reaching for something more than surface charm." In addition, Justin Chang of The New Yorker gives the film a 'fresh' rating on RT, albeit with some minor reservations, writing, 'The result is more digestible, though also less moving, than Anderson's recent Asteroid City, but it does have a stealth emotional weapon in [Mia] Threapleton's Liesl, who exudes the intelligence and self-possession of a young Anna Karina.' Coleman Spilde of Salon is among the top critics on RT who gives The Phoenician Scheme a 'rotten' rating, writing in his summary, 'The resulting product is just that: a product, with all of the matte pastel appeal of Anderson's oeuvre, yet little of its memorable charm.' Dana Stevens of Slate also gives The Phoenician Scheme a 'rotten' rating on RT, writing, 'For all its exquisite boxes-within-boxes compositions and cleverly designed sets, this whole movie unfolded for me as if behind a thick pane of emotion-proof glass.' Nicholas Barber of the BBC wasn't impressed by the film, either, writing in his 'rotten' take on RT, 'Some directors boast that they make the films that they want to see, and they don't care about pleasing anyone else. In the case of The Phoenician Scheme, it feels as if Anderson and his team were enjoying it more than audiences ever will.' The Phoenician Scheme is now playing in theaters in wide release.

When Is Wes Anderson's ‘The Phoenician Scheme' Coming To Streaming?
The Phoenician Scheme — Wes Anderson's new comedy starring Benicio del Toro, Tom Hanks, Scarlett Johansson and Bryan Cranston — is now in theaters. When will it be available to stream at home? Directed by Anderson and written by Anderson and Roman Coppola, The Phoenician Scheme held its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival before opening in theaters in limited release in six theaters on May 31. The Phoenician Scheme's studio, Focus Features, generally has a month window between the time its films open wide in theaters and arrive on PVOD. For example, the studio's acclaimed papal thriller, Conclave, opened in theaters on Oct. 25, 2024, and arrived on PVOD just over a month later, on Nov. 25. In addition, Focus Features' hit vampire thriller, Nosferatu, premiered in theaters on Dec. 24, 2024, and made its PVOD debut just under a month later, on Jan. 21. 'Dogma': 25th Anniversary Celebration Review - Kevin Smith's Controversial Classic Gets Resurrected
Kevin Smith's fourth feature film is just as prescient now, on its 25th anniversary, as it was during its original release at the Cannes Film Festival before the turn of the century. Similar in approach to satires such as Verhoeven's Starship Troopers (1997) and Judge's Idiocracy (2005), Dogma criticizes all religious sects of Western society, from Catholics to Protestants to Agnostics. Whether you're a believer, denier, or contrarian, Smith has more than a few words for you. Dogma follows two angels, Loki (Matt Damon) and Bartleby (Ben Affleck), on a quest to earn their place back in heaven by walking through the doors of a Catholic church in the midst of a rededication, when all sins will be forgiven. If they can accomplish this, transfer into human form, and then die, they can return to heaven. A young woman named Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) works at an abortion clinic and struggles with her own religious beliefs, but is pulled into the fray and encouraged to stop the fallen angels. Fortunately, she's aided by two slacker prophets, the soon-to-be-infamous Jay and Silent Bob. Along the way, they continue to receive guidance from a seraph (Alan Rickman), a 13th apostle (Chris Rock), and a muse (Salma Hayek) as everyone is in a race to stop the plan unfortunately initiated by Cardinal Glick's (George Carlin) church, though Azrael (Jason Lee) is the original trickster that sets everything in motion. Since its debut, the cast of Dogma has all gone on to successful film and television careers, mostly in front of the camera, not to mention Ben Affleck's six directorial efforts and Chris Rock's balance of acting roles, comedy shows, and award show hosting duties. Many of Smith's frequent collaborators stem from films fleshed out thanks to casting director Don Phillips (Mallrats) or Shana Lory (Chasing Amy), but Smith certainly has an eye for talent and comedic potential himself. The director continues to play with genre in Dogma, as well as tropes and stereotypes, and the line between indie features and traditional studio films couldn't be any clearer. The film constantly oscillates between poking fun at Western religion and culture, the movie industry, the film itself, and everyday life in America in the 90s. Though controversial at the time and momentarily banned and delayed in a few countries, Dogma remains a classic. Though much of the dialogue in Dogma comes across as didactic and expository, the approach and overall tone are consistent and necessary. Especially considering the current resurgence of self-help books, conspiracy theories, and rampant misinformation on the internet. Dogma's willingness to speak directly to and through its protagonist, Bethany, and subsequently the audience, makes for a movie worth listening to, whether its ideology and dogma conflict with the listener or not. Smith's film is also worth revisiting considering the pace at which AI technology is pushing into the filmmaking space, especially since the industry is only a few years removed from the writer's strikes, which took place right on the heels of the COVID-19 Pandemic recovery. Smith's work always reminds us what we're capable of as a collective: a collective of nerds, a collective of young creatives, or a collective of cast-offs and forgotten spiritual beings. If anything, Dogma reminds us to remain curious enough to create and discuss our ideas with others. In honor of the 25th anniversary, the film has been beautifully restored through remastering and color-correction in 4K by Triple Media Film with legendary cinematographer Robert Yeoman (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Bridesmaids). The remastered version, currently on a US tour of 20 cities dubbed DOGMA: The Resurrection tour, began on Easter Sunday, April 20th, at the Grove in Los Angeles, with appearances from Smith and Jason Mewes. Dogma: A 25th Anniversary Celebration is now playing newly remastered in over 1,500 theaters across North America courtesy of Iconic Events.
