Thomas Frank facing major dilemma over Tottenham players' futures including Son Heung-min and £60m Richarlison

The Sun19-06-2025
DOMINIC SOLANKE will feel ace after hearing the comments of his new boss Thomas Frank.
Frank, snapped playing table-tennis at Tottenham's training ground yesterday, spoke glowingly of the England striker during his first interview.

He served up compliments to other players too — though keen-eared fans also noted those the Dane did NOT mention.
Frank, 51, is only just through the door and will take time assessing his current squad with 2½ weeks until players return for pre-season.
But then he must decide who is in and who is out as he bids to turn Spurs into a smash hit for the new Premier League campaign . . .
GOALKEEPER
FRANK is unlikely to bring in or ship out any of his main stoppers.
There was some talk of AC Milan being interested in Guglielmo Vicario should Mike Maignan leave, but Spurs sources dismissed the prospect of selling the Italian, 28.
The biggest question mark will be whether he sticks with Vicario as his first choice or if Antonin Kinsky, 22, signed from Slavia Prague for £12.5million in January, can convince him a swap is needed.
Long-serving back-up Brandon Austin remains third choice while Alfie Whiteman leaves this month and highly-rated Josh Keeley could go out on loan again after spending last season at Leyton Orient.
DEFENCE
QUESTIONS remain over the future of Cristian Romero, one of those stars not named by Frank.

The Argentine World Cup winner, 27, appeared to be agitating for a move last season, even speaking of his desire to play in LaLiga during a candid interview.
Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone would love to sign him but a proposed £60million price tag could be prohibitive for a player who has two years left on his contract.

Fans will also demand a quality replacement if Romero goes.
Spurs offered £70m for Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi in January and the England man would likely be a target again.
One who may benefit either way is Radu Dragusin, who met Frank this week along with the club's other injured players.
The Romanian, 23, damaged knee ligaments in February and never seemed to fit into Ange Postecoglou's style.
But Frank has a history of getting the best out of no-nonsense centre-backs.
Sergio Reguilon is out on a free transfer, leaving Spurs with only three recognised full-backs — if you do not count the versatile Ben Davies. So another is likely to be required.
MIDFIELD
FRANK spoke of trying to get the best out of James Maddison and Rodrigo Bentancur, so both seem to be part of his plans.
Spurs hope to tie down the Uruguayan to a new contract with only a year left. But if that does not happen an exit would not be ruled out amid interest from Atletico.
Yves Bissouma also has only 12 months remaining and a few weeks ago fans would have expected the Malian, 28, to be sold given how far down the pecking order he fell under Postecoglou.
But he played a pivotal role in the Europa League win over Manchester United and, with Frank often favouring two holding midfielders, his future is harder to call.
Spurs want the Dane to develop their young talent, including teenagers Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray.
But another holding midfielder, perhaps with more experience, could be on Frank's shopping list.
ATTACK
'DOMINIC SOLANKE, I'm a big fan of him in terms of his abilities. I'm sure we'll make him score a lot of goals.'
So said Frank of Spurs' £65m striker, who was always going to be central to his approach. But who backs up the England man and plays wide?
Spurs have been open to selling Richarlison, 28, for a while now but, with his injury record and two years left on his deal, they might struggle to get an offer for the Brazilian that they will find acceptable.
There is serious interest in Bryan Mbeumo, 25, who scored 20 Prem goals for Frank's Brentford last term — but Manchester United are also keen.
Mathys Tel, 20, has signed permanently after his spell on loan from Bayern Munich but another speedy wideman may be targeted given how Frank likes his teams to break at pace.
Then there is captain Son Heung-min, who is open to leaving after marking ten years at the club by lifting a trophy.
Son turns 33 next month, is wanted by Saudi clubs, as well as former Spurs boss Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce and also has only a year left on his contract.
But his unique commercial value means Spurs will not let him go on the cheap — and almost certainly not until after the club's tour to South Korea at the start of August.

The real reason why Marc Guehi snubbed Oliver Glasner after Crystal Palace clash

Marc Guehi appeared to snub Oliver Glasner after Crystal Palace's draw at Chelsea fuelling speculation about his future at the club. However, it appears not all was as it seemed as there was a valid reason why the England international walked away from his manager. A week after leading Palace to glory in the Community Shield, Guehi starred as the Eagles were held to a goalless draw in their Premier League opener on Sunday. But the centre-back's time at Selhurst Park may be coming to an end as he has entered the last year of his contract and has been strongly linked with a transfer to Liverpool. Reports suggest the 25-year-old has already agreed personal terms with the Reds but the two clubs are still apart in their valuation of the Eagles captain. Following Sunday's game at Stamford Bridge, Guehi applauded the away end and was making his way back to the tunnel when Glasner called out to him. The defender seemed to look up and notice his manager before ignoring his request to speak with him and continue toward the tunnel, leaving Glasner visibly baffled. Some speculated that the incident may have had something to do with the ongoing transfer saga, but, according to News Shopper, that is not the case at all. 🗣️ "It's like the new garlic bread" Roy Keane's thoughts on that Oliver Glasner and Marc Guehi interaction at full-time of Chelsea vs Crystal Palace… — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) August 17, 2025 Instead, it is said that Guehi was randomly selected to undergo a routine drug test immediately after the full-time whistle. Having already greeted the travelling fans, the Three Lions star was keen to get on with the test and what appeared to be a tense moment between player and manager was actually just a bit of miscommunication. Glasner will no doubt clarify what happened when he speaks ahead of Palace's Conference League play-off first-leg against Fredrikstad on Thursday. Palace face the prospect of losing both Guehi and Tottenham target Eberechi Eze before the transfer window closes but Glasner has praised the pair for their professionalism despite the ongoing rumours. More Trending 'Ebs and Marc, there has been a lot of noise about these two players in the last week. Everyone could see the performances against Liverpool and today, they were 100 per cent aligned with this team and Crystal Palace,' the Austrian said. 'As long as they are 100 per cent committed, they will play as they are so good. I watched them all week in training, I spoke to them almost daily, maybe more than my kids and wife, but it's been worth it to talk to them. 'They didn't just show they are great footballers, but they are great people and that's what I expected.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Tottenham captain Cristian Romero signs new contract until 2029

The 27-year-old Argentina centre-back, who had been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid earlier this summer, was named as Spurs' new skipper on Wednesday following the departure of Son Heung-min. Romero had entered the final two years of his previous deal, but has put pen to paper on new terms running until 2029, the PA news agency understands. Romero, who starred in Tottenham's Europa League triumph in May, said: 'I'm very happy here in the club. For me this club is the best in the world. A post shared by Tottenham Hotspur (@spursofficial) 'The last two weeks, first captain and now signing the contract with the club, for me it's a fantastic decision. My message to the fans is thank you for the amazing support every day and every match. 'After winning the Europa League, it's like a special season now. In football, sometimes good moments, bad moments. The most important thing for me is to stay all together. We want to win. Maybe why not win again this season? Another trophy with the club is important for everyone.' This news will be a major boost to new Tottenham boss Thomas Frank, who fielded several questions on the topic of Romero's commitment in Friday's press conference – days after he named him captain. 'I see a very big and very good player. What I like about him and why I have chosen him as captain is his leadership qualities on the pitch,' Frank explained. 'There is a big respect for him from the players. Off the pitch as well he also sets the standards. A post shared by Tottenham Hotspur (@spursofficial) 'The staff have said to me they've never seen him train that well. He's in a very good place. I see a player that will want to lead the team and push the team.' Centre-back Romero first joined Spurs in 2021 on loan from Atalanta before the transfer was made permanent a year later. The 27-year-old has been critical of the club previously, pointedly saying last December that the spending of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea every year were 'things to imitate' because then Tottenham 'could easily be competing for the title every year' with the 'structure' they have in place. He also sent out a cryptic message on social media in the wake of Ange Postecoglou's dismissal in June and praised his achievements 'despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist'. A post shared by Cristian Romero (@cutiromero2) However, Romero proved his commitment by playing a crucial role in Tottenham's Europa League triumph in May, which ended a 17-year trophy drought for the club. Romero captained Spurs in the 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the final and also wore the armband in both semi-final legs against Bodo/Glimt. The World Cup-winner was subsequently named Europa League Player of the Season after success in Bilbao and the first club trophy of his career added to an incredible haul of silverware at international level. After Romero helped Argentina to victory at the 2022 World Cup either side of Copa America triumphs, he will aim to lead Tottenham to further trophies under Frank. We are delighted to announce that Djed Spence has signed a new, long-term contract with the Club ✍️ — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 18, 2025 Full-back Djed Spence has also signed a new deal at Spurs. Versatile full-back Spence only signed fresh terms last October until 2028, but has been rewarded for a fine breakthrough campaign at Tottenham. Spence made 35 appearances in the 2024-25 campaign, after eventually being handed his full debut in December – two-and-a-half years after he first joined the club. After Spence was deemed a 'club signing' by former Tottenham boss Antonio Conte in 2022, he had mixed loans at Rennes, Leeds and Genoa, but forced his way into Postecoglou's plans and has quickly gained the trust of Frank.
