Shootout win keeps Kettering promotion hopes alive
Two clubs, just 12 miles apart, both made headlines this season by reaching the FA Cup second round.But on Wednesday night it was Kettering Town who came out on top against Harborough Town in the most dramatic of circumstances to keep their Southern League Premier Central play-off hopes alive.The Poppies won 4-3 on penalties following a goalless draw, despite failing to score with either of their first two spot-kicks, and will now host AFC Telford United in the play-off final on Monday, May 5 (15:00 BST) with a place in the National League North or South next season at stake."I didn't watch it - I had my back turned. I did see one go in [but that's all]," Kettering manager Richard Lavery told BBC Radio Northampton."We did practice penalties but that was in front of no crowd. This was a big occasion, nearly 3,000 fans, and nobody in that entire ground - Harborough fans included - can say we didn't deserve to win that game."We had plenty of chances and you've got to take one of them - it wasn't to be. Extra time we had a few more chances, then it goes to penalties and the first ones weren't great, we missed a couple, but it doesn't matter - we're through to the final."Kettering, who knocked out League One neighbours Northampton Town in the first round of the FA Cup, had home advantage at Latimer Park by virtue of finishing second in Southern League Premier Central.But their opponents were boosted by the return of former Tottenham and Brazil midfielder Sandro, who appeared for Harborough in their 5-3 FA Cup defeat by Reading after a chance meeting with manager Mitch Austin.
It proved to be an unhappy evening for the 36-year-old who was one of four Bees players who failed to score in the shootout."It was amazing to be here with the boys. We need to be proud of ourselves because they gave 100%. Penalties, it's unlucky," Sandro told BBC Radio Leicester.Asked why he had returned for the play-offs, the Brazilian said: "We created a very good connection. It was amazing to be part of the FA Cup game and I said 'let me be involved again'. For me it was a dream to come here and play in front of the fans again."The score was 3-3 when Sandro stepped up for his penalty, but he shot wide and Connor Johnson eventually settled the tie with Kettering's seventh spot-kick."I didn't feel the pressure, I just tried to put it in the corner and it was a little bit out. I'm not good on penalties. But it will always be in my heart, this experience," he added.Kettering are hoping to return to the second tier of non-league football for the first time since being relegated in 2023, but face tough opposition in Telford who went through by beating Halesowen 3-2. Lavery was assistant to Marcus Law the last time Kettering won promotion to National League North in 2019.He returned to the club in February last year as their third manager in four months and his appointment was followed three months later by the arrival of the ambitious George Akhtar as Kettering's new owner.They took four points from their two games against Telford in the regular season, but Lavery is taking nothing for granted before Monday's game, also at Latimer Park."Telford are a good side - I don't underestimate anybody. That was a tough one [against Harborough], but we'll regroup again. We've got one more game to go - nothing's won yet," he added.

Crystal Palace face missing out on playing European football for the first time in their history despite winning the FA Cup due to UEFA's rules on multi-club ownership Eberechi Eze says that he's 'positive' about Crystal Palace's chances of avoiding a controversial ban on playing European football for the first time in their history. Eagles star Eze scored the winning goal as Palace stunned Manchester City 1-0 in the FA Cup final last month, earning them a place in next season's Europa League group phase. Or so they thought. It emerged this week that the London club's participation in the competition was suddenly in doubt because of UEFA's rules on multi-club ownership. American businessman John Textor has shares in both Palace and French giants Lyon, who've also qualified for the Europa League after finishing sixth in Ligue 1. The outspoken Textor has a 43 per cent stake in the Eagles but only 25 per cent of voting rights. Palace chiefs flew out to UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland for a meeting which is understood to have lasted two hours. Textor, who made a rare appearance representing the Eagles at Wembley, is offering to sell his Palace shares, as he did when he tried to buy Everton. UEFA chiefs are expected to confirm a decision within the next 10 days. To make matters worse, rivals Brighton would potentially replace Palace in Europe, having finished eighth in the Premier League. Eze, 26, is currently on international duty with England in Spain but he's keeping a close eye on the unfolding situation amid uncertainty over his own future. The midfielder has been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park in the summer transfer window. Tottenham, who qualified for the Champions League, are known admirers and UEFA's ruling could play a part in deciding his future. On the prospect of being Palace banned, Eze said: "I really hope that that's not the case and I hope that Palace do get the reward for that (FA Cup win), because of what it took to actually achieve it. "It would be a huge shame if that was the case, but I'm trusting that it will work out in the end. I'm sure it will work itself out and it should work itself out, because there are players who have worked to be in this position. Which club should make a bid for Eberechi Eze? Wrexham AFC: Phil Parkinson on update for Kop end stand
The Reds finished runners-up in League One this term to secure an historic third successive promotion. Back in the Championship following a 43 year absence, Parkinson's side will be playing at a three-sided stadium next season with the temporary Kop stand due to come down so that work can begin on a new, larger stand. The 5,500-capacity stand, designed by leading sports and entertainment architects Populous, has also been future proofed with the current design capable of supporting an increase in capacity, subject to a separate planning application. The rebuild of the Kop is due to be completed in time for the stadium to host the UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals tournament in 2026 and for the start of Wrexham's 2026-27 campaign. That means there will be no supporters at that end of the ground next season but Parkinson prefers to look at the bigger picture. "Unfortunately nothing can be done about that," said Parkinson. "Other grounds have had to do the same and there is no other way around that. "It is going to be different next season but we have had a few different feels at that end of The Racecourse over the last three or four years. "The most important thing is that the ground is going to be getting to where it needs to be for the division we are operating in." The temporary stand, initially designed to accommodate approximately 2,300 fans, was first used in December 2023 when Wrexham beat Newport County 2-0 in a Welsh derby in League Two. MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS An extension raised capacity to more than 3,000 for Wrexham's successful League One campaign, when the Reds finished second behind champions Birmingham City, and in February the club announced revised plans for a new Kop stand at their iconic north Wales home. Parkinson says making the stadium four-sided has benefitted his side. "It was a great idea when we got the temporary stand put up," he added. "I felt it enhanced the atmosphere a lot. "I am sure it was cost effective in the end with filling out most weeks, unless the weather was particularly bad, and it was great for us."

Marcel Desailly says Wrexham are 'good for football'
The club has become a global sensation since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney completed their takeover at The Racecourse in February 2021 while the impact of the 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary has earned the Reds a new legion of fans. There has been no shortage of success on the pitch with Wrexham finishing runners-up in League One this season, securing an historic third successive promotion under manager Phil Parkinson. Having climbed from the National League to the Championship where the Reds will compete next term for the first time in 43 years, it has been an incredible journey for the Reds. Desailly, a World Cup and European Championship winner with France who also played for the likes of AC Milan and Chelsea, says Reynolds and McElhenney have been rewarded for investing in the club. He told Oddspedia: "How well have Wrexham done? Well in football we want more investors. We aren't scared of money. "Football is ready for investment to come into the system, for people who respect the philosophy and the football. "You know that when you succeed you are going to earn a lot of money, but we like to see the investment. "They have created sports infrastructure and that's what we want to see in football. You want young people to have access to football. "So to get promoted three years in a row means you are getting the right coaches, the right players, and that's good for football." Wrexham have been a club in the spotlight since the actors became co-chairmen and former Tottenham and Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton believes other Football League sides are jealous of the Reds. Speaking to Hutton said: 'Are other Football League clubs jealous of Wrexham? Yeah. "You see them on the TV and see all the different things that they've been doing and they're getting a lot of publicity along the way, rightly so, I like it. "I don't mind it. I like all that. I like those stories. It's something different. 'Hollywood stars coming in and taking over and you see them at the games and it just gives them that kind of happy feeling. MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS "It's really motivated them to go and progress and move forward. And it's just been a brilliant story." Hutton believes Wrexham will find the step-up to the Championship - one division below the Premier League - tough going. He added: 'I just do feel that next season, unless they recruit really, really well, that it will be difficult. "It'll probably be the first year where they've come up against really strong teams week in, week out, that they'll have to work really hard for every single point. 'So we'll see where they're at. I think it'll be a good level for them to see what kind of situation they're in. It's going to be hard next season, but I like the story.'
