Evander is 'bridge' in FC Cincinnati's locker room

Sundays are usually calm around Mercy Health Training Center.
Often, the day after a match, many FC Cincinnati players spend their time inside the facility, focusing on recovery and other similar activities.
But as one talent, Evander, wraps up his work, he wanders outside, takes a seat and delivers praise to the few folks running intense sprints in the scorching summer heat.

'You'll see Evander just sitting out there, encouraging and helping the guys out, and the guys see that in him,' said goalkeeper Roman Celentano. 'They know the kind of player he is, but the fact that he's a great person around the locker room and around the guys.'
On the field, Evander's play has been vital, but off the pitch, his quality has become indispensable. In just his first season with FC Cincinnati, the Brazilian's teammates and coach have lauded his personality.
Coach Pat Noonan said Evander, who has 20 goal contributions in 20 matches, has had a tremendous impact on FC Cincinnati, noting the star's humility in working with the coaching staff and accepting challenges.
Evander has accepted development challenges and connected with his teammates, which has helped him get on the ball closer to the goal more often. The midfielder has also been running extra to be especially fit, given the blistering summer heat.
'One of the players said that (Evander)'s the bridge in the locker room,' Noonan said. 'He connects with everybody and in a really unique but authentic way. And staff members love him. He goes about this profession and being a star player in such a humble way.'
Evander said he has always tried to connect with everyone in the locker room, crediting wingback DeAndre Yedlin for the 'bridge' nickname.
'For me, it matters how everyone is feeling.'
Evander is modest in his in-match demeanor. He roams the pitch and makes plays – lots, in fact – but often leaves the talking to the teammates.
Around the locker room, however, Evander jokes and connects with nearly everyone. He said those connections manifest themselves in games.
'I like to be nice with everyone,' Evander said. 'I like to have a good chat with everyone … For me, it matters how everyone is feeling, and I'm trying to do my best to help the team off the pitch as well.'
Midfielder Pavel Bucha said Evander gets along with everyone. On the pitch, the Czech player noted that he is always trying to find the Brazilian. Off the field seems to be not much different.
'(Evander) fits in the locker room in a perfect way,' Bucha said. 'Everybody loves (having) him here, and we are so glad and lucky to have him just because (of) the way he plays, but also on the other part, it's so easy to talk to him. (He's a) really good guy outside of the pitch.'
Defender Alvas Powell echoed a similar sentiment, saying Evander was 'playful' and talkative in the locker room.
'Whatever you see on the field, Evander, he's giving you exactly what he does in training every single day,' he said. 'Very humble guy in the locker room … I'm grateful that I'm playing next to him.'
'We were pleasantly surprised with just how affable he is.'
General manager Chris Albright said he was unaware of how 'affable' Evander was until he began speaking with him. It could have been easy for a player like Evander to be cocky after scoring 15 goals and notching 15 assists with the Portland Timbers in 2024. Instead, Albright said Evander has been incredibly likable and 'more additive' than they expected.
'We were pleasantly surprised with just how affable he is and how easygoing he is,' Albright said. ' He doesn't have the demeanor of a normal No. 10.'
More: Magical moments have become regular for FC Cincinnati's Evander
Noonan said he had heard Evander connected well with teammates and staff members, but noted that it's hard to know how those traits would manifest themselves in a new environment.
Luckily for FC Cincinnati, they have. Tremendously.
'Everything's authentic, everything is respectful, but with the idea to build relationships and to improve in different ways, on and off the field,' Noonan said of Evander. 'And so that's why that word (bridge) has been used – It's accurate.
'He's been better than advertised.'

Sean Payton: Dre Greenlaw plays like Mike Tyson

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw made the most of the first day in pads at Broncos training camp. Greenlaw filled gaps and delivered hits throughout team drills in Denver and head coach Sean Payton said you didn't even have to be watching to know that Greenlaw was the one landing blows. Payton said "you can hear it" when Greenlaw makes a hit and then went on to compare his style to another knockout artist from a different sport. "He plays like Mike Tyson," Payton said, via the team's website. "He's tough, he's physical. He's built that way. There's not a lot of leaky yardage. Some guys [allow that]. He's a knock-back tackler. They stop where he hits them. There's an intensity to how he plays. He's one of those players that if you put the film on and didn't say anything, at some point early, you'd ask, 'Who is this guy?'" Greenlaw was limited to two games for the 49ers last year because of injuries and a quad injury interrupted his first offseason in Denver, so one key for the Broncos will be making sure Greenlaw's healthy enough to deploy that physicality on a regular basis. If he is, facing an already tough Broncos defense will be even less enjoyable for opposing offenses in 2025.

Commanders put OL Nate Herbig on reserve/retired list

Veteran offensive lineman Nate Herbig is walking away from football. Herbig signed with the Commanders this offseason, but the team announced on Tuesday morning that he has been placed on the team's reserve/retired list. He will no longer count against the team's 90-man roster limit. Herbig spent the last two seasons with the Steelers, but did not play at all in 2024 after a rotator cuff injury. Herbig appeared in 17 games for the Steelers in 2023 and he started 11 games at guard for the Jets in 2022. The Eagles signed Herbig as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and he started 17 of the 33 games he played while with Philadelphia. Nick Allegretti and Chris Paul remain on hand as depth options at guard in Washington.

Recapping Day 5 of Chicago Bears training camp

The Chicago Bears were back at Halas Hall for their fifth practice of training camp on Monday morning, where there were still plenty of notable headlines and standouts. The Bears were in pads for the first time during training camp, which is when the real evaluation begins for roster spots and position battles. According to Brad Biggs, practice lasted roughly two hours in "sweltering humidity" where there was a "major emphasis on run game" with "some of the pass stuff was 1/2 speed or 2/3 speed, so not a lot to go off of." Let's recap Day 5 of Bears training camp: What we learned Rookie wide receiver Luther Burden III practiced for the first time during training camp on Monday. Burden missed the previous four non-padded practices with a lingering hamstring injury. But on the first day of pads, Burden was back and ready to go with his teammates. Burden was spotted participating during individual drills, but he wasn't on the field for team drills. That's not unexpected as he's ramping up (as expected) and should be full-go by the end of the week. Bears rookie tight end Colston Loveland has only practiced in full for two days, but he's made headlines after both outings. Loveland was the standout of Monday's practice, where he shined during 7-on-7 with some nice catches. According to Patrick Finley, that included "leaping to catch a Caleb Williams pass over the middle." DJ Moore reminded everyone why he's still WR1 during Monday's practice. According to Zack Pearson, Moore won a rep against cornerback Tyrique Stevenson on a deep ball where he made a sliding catch from quarterback Caleb Williams during 1-on-1 drills. Moore's helmet even popped off during the reception. Alex Shapirorevealed that Moore got a look at running back during this padded practice, which "could be fun" in this Ben Johnson offense. With the Bears in pads for the first time this summer -- and Braxton Jones a full-go in practice -- the left tackle competition has officially kicked into high gear. Chicago rotated all three contenders -- rookie Ozzy Trapilo, Jones and Kiran Amegadjie -- with the starting offensive line during team drills on Monday morning. But according to Mark Carman, the left tackle battle is "going to last awhile" as there's "no clear standout" at this point. The offensive line "dominated the"looked pretty stout" against the defensive line during one-on-one drills, per Alex Shapiro. According to Clay Harbor, here's how it went down: "Darnell Wright won vs. Montez Sweat; Jonah Jackson won vs. Gervon Dexter Sr.; Drew Dalman won vs. (Andrew Billings); Joe Thuney won vs. Grady Jarrett and Kiran Amegadjie won vs. Dayo Odeyingbo." Another day, another JP Richardson mention during training camp practice. The undrafted rookie wide receiver has been one of the biggest standouts through the first five days of camp, and he continued his impressive showcase into padded practice. According to Zack Pearson, won two reps during 1-on-1 drills -- which was notable as defensive backs had the edge on the day. But he did drop one pass and another was overthrown to him deep. Per Alex Shapiro, Richardson has excelled "creating space," which was evident on Monday. Standouts TE Colston Loveland: Loveland has made a strong impression in his two full days of practice. The 10th overall pick was the standout of Monday's practice, where he shined during 7-on-7 with some nice catches. According to Patrick Finley, that included "leaping to catch a Caleb Williams pass over the middle." Loveland returned to full speed on Saturday after missing the entire offseason program recovering from shoulder surgery. But after just two days, he already looks like he hasn't missed a beat and could be a key contributor in Ben Johnson's offense. WR DJ Moore: While Rome Odunze has been the standout wide receiver so far in training camp, DJ Moore once again showed why he'll be a key playmaker in Ben Johnson's offense. According to Zack Pearson, Moore won a rep against cornerback Tyrique Stevenson on a deep ball where he made a sliding catch from quarterback Caleb Williams during 1-on-1 drills. Moore's helmet even came off during the catch. While there's no denying that Moore will serve a key role in the passing game, Alex Shapiro revealed that Moore got a look at running back during this padded practice, which "could be fun" with Johnson calling the shots on offense. DT Grady Jarrett: The Bears offensive line appeared to best the defensive line during one-on-one drills during Monday's practice, but veteran Grady Jarrett held his own -- and there were plenty of comments about his practice. Mark Carman said "Jarrett was a problem in one-on-one drills" while Alex Shapiro noted Jarrett "looks disruptive as ever." Clay Harbor added that Jarrett "still has juice plays with a motor" and "still has quicks and explosiveness." Following practice, center Drew Dalman wasn't sure Jarrett has any weaknesses and believes it's beneficial for any offensive lineman to go against him. Jarrett has been an impactful run defender and disruptive pass rusher with the Falcons, and it appears like he hasn't lost a step with the Bears. WR JP Richardson: This isn't the first time JP Richardson has landed on this list, and it certainly won't be the last. It appears like every other day the undrafted rookie wide receiver is making waves during training camp as he states his case for a roster spot, and he continued his impressive showcase once the pads came on. According to Zack Pearson, Richardson won two reps during 1-on-1 drills -- which was impressive considering defensive backs had the edge on the day. But he did drop one pass and another was a deep overthrow (not from Williams). According to Alex Shapiro, Richardson has excelled "creating space," which was evident on Monday. Injury updates While Luther Burden III made his return to practice, the Bears are still without rookie defensive tackle Shemar Turner (ankle), rookie cornerback Zah Frazier (personal) and offensive lineman Doug Kramer. But there was some reassuring news with Kramer, who suffered a leg injury near the end of Saturday's practice. While he didn't participate on Monday, he was dubbed "day-to-day." In Kramer's absence, rookie Luke Newman got the work with the backup offensive line at center. Meanwhile, newly-signed defensive end Tanoh Kpassagnon was carted off with apparent hand/wrist injury. Also, offensive lineman Bill Murray came off the field limping with an apparent left knee injury, which is something to monitor. Highlights Press conferences What's next The Bears are back on the practice field on Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. CT for their sixth practice of training camp. It marks the third open practice of the summer, where fans will be out in Halas Hall at full force.
