PWSC implements urgent measures to mitigate water supply issues
Its chief executive officer, Datuk K. Pathmanathan, said the company's move to optimise its pipeline system, including valve adjustments, to channel more water to affected areas, has helped shorten the duration of interruptions.
Currently, consumers experience low water pressure during the peak hours of between 6 pm and 11 pm, but efforts are in progress to reduce the disruption to just two to three hours daily.
'July and August are the most challenging months due to higher demand and usage during the hot season, especially with ongoing development projects.
'During peak hours, some 3,000 to 4,000 consumer accounts, mostly in SPS, are affected by low pressure, and we've even received complaints of complete supply loss for three to five hours,' he told reporters at the Air Itam Dam today.
He was speaking after officiating the Auxiliary Police Hub of Perbadanan Bekalan Air Holdings Bhd, launched by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. Also present was Penang Acting police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin
Pathmanathan said that any further increase in water pressure could raise the level of non-revenue water, including the risk of leaks and burst pipes, as parts of the piping system in the affected areas are more than 50 years old.
He noted that two major projects have been approved as long-term solutions for SPS. The first is the Sungai Kerian Water Treatment Plant project, with a capacity of 114 million litres per day (MLD), which is already underway and expected to be completed within 14 to 18 months.
'The second is a new 50 MLD Dissolved Air Flotation water treatment module at Sungai Kerian, which was recently approved by the board of directors and is expected to be completed within 12 to 14 months,' he said.
Affected areas in SPS include Sungai Bakap, Nibong Tebal, Jawi, Simpang Ampat, Bukit Tambun, and Batu Kawan.
Other impacted locations are Bukit Penara and Balik Pulau in the Southwest District, as well as several parts of Seberang Perai Tengah. — BERNAMA

Kedah water agency raising tariffs, says to sustain water supply in state
ALOR SETAR, Aug 3 — Syarikat Air Darul Aman (Sada) is implementing a tariff adjustment through a review of the Tariff Setting Mechanism for all categories of users in Kedah, taking into account the company's operational expenditure (opex) and capital expenditure (capex). In a statement, Sada said the tariff adjustment came into effect on Friday and will be reflected in the September billing cycle. 'The tariff adjustment is a crucial requirement for the water operator to ensure long-term sustainability of the water supply in the state. It is also in line with Sada's ongoing efforts to improve service quality through the development of water infrastructure projects currently being actively implemented by the state government and Sada itself. 'Key focus areas include the replacement of old and deteriorated pipes, which are the main contributors to the non-revenue water (NRW) issue. To address water supply shortages, several new water treatment plant (WTP) projects are being developed, including the Pelubang WTP, Kodiang WTP Phase 1, Padang Saga WTP Phases 4 and 5, Sidam Kiri WTP Phase 1, Sungai Karangan WTP Phase 1, and the construction of a compact plant at Kulim Hi-Tech,' it said. Sada added that repair works for distribution systems and pump houses were also being actively carried out to address low water pressure issues in several areas. It said additional revenue from the tariff adjustment would be used to cover operating costs, repair and maintenance of existing systems, development of new, more sustainable and efficient water supply systems, improvements in service quality, including the company's capacity to respond to consumer complaints more swiftly, and to reduce the NRW rate in Kedah. 'The adjustment also considers the need to meet the company's operating costs for 2025, which are expected to increase by six per cent, covering key components such as electricity, wages, raw water charges, and chemicals used in the water treatment process,' it said. Sada stated that these rising costs exerted direct pressure on the company's operational capacity to deliver efficient, stable and quality water supply services to the people of Kedah. 'This tariff adjustment is seen as a strategic step to ensure the company's financial stability and to strengthen Sada's ability to continuously plan and implement service improvements,' it added. Overall, the impact of the tariff adjustment was described as reasonable and not burdensome. Sada said the adjustment had gone through a thorough review with the National Water Services Commission (SPAN) and was being implemented in phases to avoid burdening users. According to the statement, the approach taken strikes a balance between user affordability and the need for the water operator to meet its operating expenses. US tariff cut benefits Malaysia SMEs, says Penang CM Chow
GEORGE TOWN: The tariff reduction for Malaysia, from 25 per cent to 19 per cent, is seen as a good step forward and comes as a positive achievement and a relief for many, said Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow. The chief minister said that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) might remain exposed in the new tariff environment, and hoped that the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) would continue negotiating for better deals for these businesses. 'We hope MITI will continue negotiating better deals and prepare for the possible impact, especially on our small and medium industries (SMEs), who may be more exposed in this new environment,' he told reporters at the GBS By The Sea launching ceremony in Bayan Lepas here, today. Chow said that the current exemptions remained in place for now, but expects the situation to become clearer by the end of the year. He highlighted that Penang accounted for about 55 per cent of Malaysia's electrical and electronics (E&E) exports, highlighting the state's vital contribution to the national economy and reinforcing the urgency for strategic trade negotiations. It was reported earlier that the US would impose a reduced 19 per cent tariff on Malaysian imports, effective Aug 1, 2025. On July 7, Washington announced a 25 per cent tariff on all Malaysian products entering the US, in addition to existing sectoral tariffs, effective Aug 1 this year. This figure was one percentage point higher than the tariff rate announced in April. Meanwhile, on the Penang-Perak water project, Chow said negotiations with the Perak state authority would commence soon. 'We are working pretty well. Negotiations with Perak will begin very soon, followed by the implementation of the project. The target is by 2030 to 2031,' he said. Chow added that the additional water supply would be crucial for supporting the Penang Development Corporation (PDC)'s efforts to open new areas for industrial development. The chief minister also highlighted that Penang remained on a strong growth trajectory, driven by positive investment sentiment, including both new investments and expansions. 'We are currently focused on expanding our industrial parks. Recently, I announced that we have sufficient industrial land for the next five years. 'But sometimes, we may speak too soon.
