Four bets for today and tomorrow

Four bets for today and tomorrow

Spectator11-07-2025
It is so-called 'Super Saturday' tomorrow with a host of great racing from Newmarket, York and Ascot. The fast ground, which follows yet another week of fine weather, has reduced the anticipated size of some of the handicap fields but there is still a host of competitive racing at the three tracks.
Before I turn to tomorrow's fare, I want to put up bets for today's racing at York and Newmarket. I generally don't like to back horses on their seasonal debut because their fitness cannot be guaranteed, especially when racing against rivals who have a race, or in this case several races, under their belts.
However, in York's Group 3 William Hill Summer Stakes (2.45 p.m.), CELANDINE is not only the pick of the runners on last year's racecourse form but she is also the subject of some sparkling gallop reports from Lambourn handler Ed Walker. He has worked his three-year-old filly with the likes of his top sprinters, Mgheera and Balmoral Lady. In his Racing Post Weekender column on Wednesday, Walker revealed that connections had toyed with supplementing Celandine for the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket tomorrow because she has been working so well.
Instead, going for the easier option at York, he said he expects his filly to be hard to beat if she translates her home work to the racetrack. So in this 12-runner field over six furlongs, back Celandine at 1 point each way at 5-1 with bet365, paying four places. Other bookies are half a point bigger but with one place less. At Newmarket, I want to back two horses in the bet365 Trophy (3 p.m.), a red-hot handicap over 1 mile 6 furlongs that is worth more than £51,000 to winning connections. The favourite, Endless Victory, will be tough to beat but he is too short for me at 3-1.
Ian Williams is a masterful trainer of middle-distance handicappers and he certainly knows how to prime one of his inmates for a big target. The trouble is that today Williams fields thee of the 13 runners in this bet365 Trophy and they all have a decent chance.
The shortest price of the trio, and the one with probably the best chance of winning, is Dancing In Paris who has run two mighty races in the past month, first at Goodwood and then at Newcastle. He is 4lbs well in as a result of this being an early-closing handicap as he will go up by that amount in future handicaps after his second in the JenningsBet Northumberland Plate late last month.
However, betting is all about odds and so I am instead going to back Williams' two other runners. The first is ONEFORTHEGUTTER who is constantly under-estimated in these big handicaps. Now only was the gelding, now six, second in this very race last year, he went on to be third in the Sky Bet Ebor, Europe's richest handicap, last August before filling the same place in the Virgin Bet November Handicap at the end of the season.
It is true that the horse has a poor win ratio – just three wins from 31 runs – but that may simply be because he contests such competitive races. Oneforthegutter is still nicely weighted off a mark of 92, ran well last time out at Ayr and, at more than twice the odds of Dancing In Paris, the recommendation is 1 point each way on him at 12-1 with bet365, paying four places.
The other Williams runner is REAL DREAM, who is 6lbs well in after finishing a close third to Coltrane in the listed Coral Marathon at Sandown a week ago. The form of that slowly-run, four-horse race could be suspect but Real Dream also ran a fair race in the Copper Horse handicap at Royal Ascot too.
With Tom Marquand in the saddle today, I loved the look of his price yesterday afternoon when he was widely available at 14-1. Sadly, since then the horse has been put up by two of the best tipsters in the land, Matt Brocklebank and Tom Segal, and his price has crashed. Nevertheless, back him each way 1 point each way at 17-2 with William Hill, Betfred Ladbrokes and Coral, all paying four places.
Turning to Super Saturday, I had expected to put up Holkham Bay in the LK Bennett Butterfly Mark Heritage handicap (4.50 p.m.) over five furlongs at Ascot. This horse was a hugely unlucky loser during Royal Ascot week when fourth to the trail blazing front-runner Get It in the Wokingham Stakes handicap over six furlongs.
Racing away from the main group of 21 runners, Holkham Bay won his race on the near side comfortably against six rivals, only to be beaten into fourth less than a length by the winner and two others racing far away from him. At five years old, Holkham Bay seems to be getting better with age and he has a wonderful record at Ascot – two wins and a second from his three previous runs at the track other than the Wokingham. However, his price of 7-2, added to his off-putting drawn in stall 1 and this shorter trip, means that I will give him a miss as bet.
Instead, at a much bigger price, I will suggest 1 point each way on EXISTENT for the in-form Stuart Williams yard. The Newmarket handler' has won five races from just 20 runners over the past fortnight for an impressive strike rate of 25 per cent.
Existent is consistent having been second or third in his last six outings and I am hoping the booking of talented 7lbs claimer Ashely Lewis can be the deciding factor in enabling him to get his head in front where it matters. Back him 1 point each way at 11-1 with Sky Bet paying a generous six places in this 18-runner race. Other bookies have Existent a point higher but with less places.
My biggest fancy of the weekend runs at York tomorrow in the John Smith's Cup (3.10 p.m.), a race in which I have already put up two bets ante-post. I am happy to be on Thunder Run each way at 12-1 but the horse I am sweetest on, now that he has his preferred quick ground, is See That Storm, already tipped each way at 14-1. I have high hopes for him even in an 18-runner handicap as competitive as this. Next week I am going to suggest some ante-post bets for the big summer meetings, including Glorious Goodwood, so watch this space.
Last weekend: – 5.2 points.
1 point each way Balmoral Lady at 8-1 for the Coral Charge, paying 1/5th odds, 4 places. Unplaced. – 2 points.
1 point each way Miss Tonnerre at 10-1 for the Coral Distaff, paying 1/5th odds, 3 places. Unplaced. – 2 points.
1 point each way Minstrel Knight at 11-1 for the Old Newton Cup, paying 1/5th odds, 5 places. Unplaced. – 2 points.
1 point each way Paddy The Squire at 9-1 for the Old Newton Cup, paying 1/5th odds, 5 places. 2nd. + 0.8 points.
Pending:
1 point each way Celandine at 5-1 for the Summer Stakes, paying 1/5th odds, 3 places.
1 point each way Oneforthegutter at 12-1 for the bet365 Trophy, paying 1/5th odds, 4 places.
1 point each way Real Dream at 17-2 for the bet365 Trophy, paying 1/5th odds, 4 places.
1 point each way Thunder Run at 12-1 for the John Smith's Cup, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places.
1 point each way See That Storm at 14-1 for the John Smith's Cup, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places.
1 point each way Existent at 11-1 for the Mark Heritage, paying 1/5th odds, 6 places.
2025 flat season running total: + 39.46 points.
2024-5 jump season: – 47.61 points on all tips.
2024 flat season: + 41.4 points on all tips.
2023-4 jump season: + 42.01 points on all tips.
2023 flat season: – 48.22 points on all tips.
2022-3 jump season: + 54.3 points on all tips.

Three big priced bets for the summer

This weekend's racing does not get me excited from a betting point of view so instead I am going to put up three ante-post bets at big odds. These horses should give those who follow my tips an interest, hopefully even a profit, at some of the bigger meetings over the coming month. I can't resist a big-field handicap on Ascot's long straight course so the International, run a week tomorrow over seven furlongs, is just my cup of tea. There could be some value about because I rate the favourite, More Thunder, and another fancied runner, Skukuza, as doubtful runners. The most likely winner of this race in my view is Aalto after his splendid run when pipped on the line by More Thunder in last week's bet365 Bunbury Cup at Newmarket. He is 5lbs well in for the forthcoming Ascot race for which the weights were set before last weekend's big performance by trainer Ian Williams' five-year-old gelding. However, Aalto has been backed from 20-1 to single figures odds in the past five days, plus he is a hold-up horse who needs luck in running. More worrying, there are a lot of thunder showers forecast for Ascot next week and Aalto is a confirmed fast-ground horse. All in all, single figure odds in a likely 29-runner maximum field are a shade too short. On the other hand, odds of 40-1 on last year's winner of this race, NORTHERN EXPRESS, are too long, especially as Michael Dods' runner can race of a 2lbs lower official mark this time around. At seven years old, this admirable gelding might just be past his very best but he was fourth in this race in both 2023 and 2022 and he clearly loves this course and distance. Unlike with Aalto, all ground conditions come alike to Northern Express which is a big plus. He has run moderately so far this season when Dods' horses seemed a little out of sorts but the trainer is in much sharper form now with six winners from his last 29 runners over the past fortnight for a strike rate of 21 per cent. Back Northern Express 1 point each way at 40-1 with bet365 or Unibet, paying four places. Glorious Goodwood is only 11 days away and I am going to put up a couple of horses that are not ground-dependent just in case the rain finally arrives. Both selections also have strong form on Goodwood's unique turning and undulating track which demands a well-balanced horse if he or she is to run well. In the seven-furlong Group 2 seven-furlongs HKJC World Pool Lennox Stakes on July 29, WITNESS STAND could outrun his odds for the Dr Richard Newland and Jamie Insole training duo. There was a lot to like about his return to the track after a break when he has second, beaten only a head, by Holguin in a listed race at Chester last Saturday. Furthermore, Witness Stand ran two big races at Goodwood, when then trained by Tom Clover, in August last year including winning a seven-furlong handicap on good to firm ground at the Glorious Goodwood meeting. Interestingly, his joint trainers are sure this horse will be even better on soft ground so if the wet stuff does finally arrive that would be a bonus not a concern. Back him 1 point each way at 33-1. Those odds are offered by bet365, Sky Bet, Paddy Power, Betfair, BetVictor and Unibet. The Coral Golden Mile at Goodwood on 1 August is one of the most competitive handicaps of the year and the draw often plays a key part, with low numbers favoured (although last year the first two home were drawn in stalls 21 and 20). EBT'S GUARD is a likeable, consistent four-year-old gelding and all tracks and all ground descriptions come alike to him. This horse is in the hands of another extremely capable joint-trainers team of William Muir and Chris Grassick. Ebt's Guard was second in a one-mile handicap for three-year-olds last year at Glorious Goodwood and might have won with a clearer run. The Golden Mile at Glorious Goodwood on August 1 is his only current entry and he is capable of a big run in the race with better luck in running. Back him 1 point each way at 25-1 with bet365, William Hill or Unibet, all paying four places. Anyway, that's three horses, one at 40-1, one at 33-1 and one at 25-1, for an interest over the coming weeks. I have a couple more horses that I am hugely keen on for the second half of the season: one is soft-ground dependent so not suitable as an ante-post bet and the target for the other is undecided. They will, however, certainly be highlighted in this column, hopefully sooner rather than later. I also have some strong views on ante-post bets for York's Ebor meeting but that is not until the end of August so I will save those thoughts for a later blog too. I am pleased to say that last weekend was profitable for this blog with a 12-1 winner in Oneforthegutter and three other placed horse from the five tips. However, See That Storm in the John Smith's Cup at York was the one that got away, put up each way at 14-1 ante-post before going off at 11-2 on the day. Through no fault of jockey Callum Rodriguez, the horse pulled far too hard because of the desperately slow early pace and yet, despite this, he still ran a mighty race to be second. I strongly suspect See That Storm, an improving four-year-old gelding, will be winning again before the season is out so, if you have a horse tracker, I suggest you put him in it. Pending: 1 point each way Northern Express at 40-1 for the International, paying ¼ odds, 4 places. 1 point each way Witness Stand at 33-1 for the Lennox, paying 1/5th odds, 3 places. 1 point each way Ebt's Guard at 25-1 for the Golden Mile, paying ¼ odds, 4 places. Last weekend: + 15.4 points. 1 point each way Celandine at 5-1 for the Summer Stakes, paying 1/5th odds, 3 places. 3rd, Quits. 1 point each way Oneforthegutter at 12-1 for the bet365 Trophy, paying 1/5th odds, 4 places. 1st. + 14.4 points. 1 point each way Real Dream at 17-2 for the bet365 Trophy, paying 1/5th odds, 4 places. 3rd. + 0.5 point. 1 point each way Thunder Run at 12-1 for the John Smith's Cup, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places. Unplaced. – 2 points. 1 point each way See That Storm at 14-1 for the John Smith's Cup, paying 1/4 odds, 4 places. 2nd. +2.5 points. 1 point each way Existent at 11-1 for the Mark Heritage, paying 1/5th odds, 6 places. Non runner. Stake returned. 2025 flat season running total: + 54.86 points.

Germany vs France prediction & best bets: French a strong fancy to advance

Germany vs France Betting Tips France to win & BTTS - 3/1 Bet365 Eight-time European champions Germany take on France on Saturday for a place in the semi-finals of Euro 2025 (8pm, ITV1). The Germans finished second in Group C after being beaten 4-1 by group winners Sweden, playing over an hour of that game with 10 players after Carlotta Wamser was sent off. Wamser will now be missing for Christian Wuck's side, who know they will have to play better if they are to get past France, who topped Group D. France finished as group winners after beating England, Wales and the Netherlands, and they are currently third favourites to win the trophy on betting sites. Germany have seen their Euro 2025 odds lengthen in the outright market following their humbling loss to Sweden and they look vulnerable against a French team focused on a first major honour. France might never have won a major tournament, but they are in impressive form and recently won six out of six games to finish top of their Nations League group, scoring 14 and conceding just two. They will now face Germany in the semi-finals later this year, but first they meet in Basel for a place in the last four of Euro 2025. The two sides have met 23 times in total and Germany lead the head-to-head by 13-6, with the other four meetings ending all square. One of those matches came in the semi-finals of Euro 22, when Germany ran out 2-1 winners in Milton Keynes, before they were beaten in the final by England. France got revenge in the inaugural Nations League, beating Germany 2-1 in their semi-final match before they were beaten by Spain in the final. We don't think there will be too much between these two sides, with the last five meetings all being won by just one goal. France are favoured by football betting sites to advance to the semi-finals, but they won't have this clash all their own way and adding in both teams to score bumps up the price on a French win. A Boy Named Susie impresses in winning start at Killarney

The one-mile contest has a rich recent history, being won 12 months ago by dual Derby hero Lambourn while future multiple Group One winner Luxembourg took top honours in 2021. Dial Me In was sent off the 4-5 favourite for Joseph O'Brien, but it was his brother Donnacha who was celebrating, as his Starspangledbanner newcomer showed a real turn of foot over a furlong out when asked by Gavin Ryan. O'Brien said of his 100-30 scorer, who is owned by his sister and holds a Group One entry in the National Stakes at the Curragh: 'We thought he was good as he did a really, really good piece of work up the Curragh a few weeks ago. 'This auction race looked a tough ask as he was giving away weight to winners and it is a tough track first time out, but he is obviously just smart. 'For an auction race at Killarney, it has thrown up Iridessa, Luxembourg and last year Lambourn and a few Group Two winners as well, so it's a nice start for him. 'They hacked and then sprinted, but I think he could be a proper one. He has plenty gears for a big horse.' Regarding a serious fall suffered by the successful owner at the track in July 2017, he said: 'It is a better experience for Ana than the last time she was here and that's her first winner as an owner as well.' Ana O'Brien added: 'In fairness Donnacha always liked this horse and I'm delighted he came out and did that. It's my first time back here since my fall, so thankfully this is a much better day.' The evening's feature, the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Cairn Rouge Stakes, went to Red Letter – but the Ger Lyons-trained filly (8-11 favourite) was given a fright by Fiery Lucy on the way to recording a half-length success. Lyons was represented by his brother, Shane, who said of the Juddmonte-owned, Colin Keane-ridden winner: 'She has done it the hard way, she was drawn and caught wide and the first two pulled well clear of the third horse. 'The runner-up is a hardened Listed horse and Colin was delighted with the way she handled the ground and said she will get further. 'She has got the job done today, but when she fills into her frame, she'll be some horse next year. 'She has a championship cruising speed which you need for future races and Colin said if he had been beaten, it was because they didn't go fast enough. 'We'll get home, speak to Colin and the family and make a proper plan.'
