15th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship to start in Chennai from July 28
The tournament will run until August 8 and will follow the newly introduced division-based format, which was first implemented earlier this year during the Senior Men and Women's National Championships and earlier this month during the Women's Sub Junior National Championship.
Like the earlier National Championships this year, the 15th Hockey India Sub Junior Men National Championship 2025 features 29 teams divided into three divisions—Division A, Division B, and Division C—with the aim of introducing an added competitive edge with promotion and relegation of teams at stake.
Division A of the Men's Sub Junior National Championship comprises the top 12 teams in the country and will feature defending champions Uttar Pradesh Hockey in Pool A, last year's runners-up Hockey Haryana in Pool B, and second runners-up Hockey Punjab in Pool C.
Meanwhile, Division B and Division C will comprise teams that are not in the top 12 rankings, fighting to climb the ranks and make it to a higher division for next year's National Championship.
Division Format & Pool Composition:
Division 'A' (Top-tier Championship Division): Teams will compete for the title, and the 11th and 12th ranked teams will be relegated to Division 'B'. Matches for Division A will start on August 1.
Teams:
Pool A: Uttar Pradesh Hockey, Hockey Madhya Pradesh, Delhi
Pool B: Hockey Haryana, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu Hockey, Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu
Pool C: Hockey Punjab, Hockey Jharkhand, Hockey Karnataka
Pool D: Hockey Association of Odisha, Hockey Chandigarh, Hockey Maharashtra
Each team will play round-robin matches within their pool. The top two teams from each pool will qualify for the Quarterfinals (August 5), followed by the Semifinals (August 6) and the Final & 3rd place playoff (August 8).
In Division A, if a classification match ends in a draw at the end of regulation time, a shoot-out competition—as specified in the FIH Tournament Regulations—will be conducted to determine
the winners.
Division 'B' (Mid-tier Division): Only league matches will take place, with the top two ranked teams being promoted to Division 'A' and the last two ranked teams being relegated to Division 'C'. Matches for Division B will start on July 28 and conclude on August 1.

Pool A: Hockey Arunachal, Chhattisgarh Hockey, Hockey Bengal, Hockey Gujarat, Goans Hockey
Pool B: Kerala Hockey, Manipur Hockey, Hockey Himachal, Hockey Andhra Pradesh, Telangana Hockey
Division 'C' (Entry-level Division): Only league matches will take place, with the top two ranked teams
being promoted to Division 'B'. Matches for Division C will start on July 28 and conclude on July 31.

Pool A: Rajasthan, Le Puducherry Hockey, Jammu & Kashmir
Pool B: Hockey Association of Bihar, Hockey Uttarakhand, Hockey Mizoram, Tripura
Across all three divisions, teams will earn 3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, and 0 points for
a loss.
Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said, "We have had a very positive response to the new division-based format, which has also made the competition more interesting for domestic players. The Sub Junior Women National Championship also had a very positive response earlier this month, and we are positive we will see a similar response in the Sub Junior Men National Championship as well."
Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh echoed his sentiments, adding, "This revamped structure is getting a very positive response from all the domestic teams, and now with the added pressure to avoid relegation, teams, be it at the Senior level or at the Sub Junior level, have become more competitive during the tournament. We will continue providing this pivotal exposure to our Sub Junior teams in Chennai, and I am sure all 29 teams will have a memorable tournament."

Yangon (Myanmar), Aug 6 (UNI) The India U20 Women's Team were held to a goalless draw by Indonesia at the Thuwunna Stadium today, in their opening Group D encounter of the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers. The Young Tigresses have one point in the group, which is currently topped by hosts Myanmar, who defeated Turkmenistan 6-1 at the same venue, earlier in the day. An intense midfield battle began right from the kick-off, as both sides looked to assert their dominance. India managed to settle into the game early on, as they were able to pass it around in the opposition half, often creating chances down the wings. Neha's sixth-minute cross from the left wing deceived the Indonesian defence, leaving Pooja and Sulanjana Raul on the chase at the far post. A simple touch could have posed serious questions to Indonesia goalkeeper Alleana Ayu Arumy, but the ball eluded everyone. As the clock ticked past the half-hour mark, Sulanjana and Pooja tried their luck from long range. While the former's effort missed the target by inches, the latter saw her shot fly straight into Alleana's hands. Neha looked lively down the left flank after the change of ends, but the Indonesia defenders worked in unison to isolate the former and gain possession of the ball. With a little over 20 minutes left, India began to press high in order to induce some panic among the Indonesia defence. Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam intercepted a pass in the attacking third and cut it back for substitute Babita Kumari, who had replaced Neha. The latter, however, was unable to get a touch on the ball. Minutes later, Sibani looked to find Babita again with a cross from the left, but Alleana collected it calmly. Indonesia's only notable chance of the match came in the 87th minute, when substitute Ajeng Sri Handayani bounded past the India defence and attempted to place the ball at the far post. India goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem, however, got down low to make a save before Thoibisana Chanu Toijam cleared. IGPL will be launchpad for future generations: Gaganjeet Singh Bhullar
New Delh, Aug 6(UNI) Gaganjeet Singh Bhullar, the veteran Indian golfer, has signed on with the Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) as an Icon player, and will be leading one of the six franchises in the highly-anticipated tournament. The Arjuna Awardee, during a media briefing, expressed his excitement, describing IGPL as one of the most exciting golf ventures in many years, and explained the reasons behind his participation. 'Golf is an individual sport. But whenever I have had the opportunity to represent my country, I have really enjoyed playing as a team,' Bhullar, who was part of India's silver medal-winning team at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, said. 'When I heard the news regarding a golf league, I knew it was exactly what I was looking forward for. Because we do not often get to play as a team. I think that was one part which was missing and I was really looking forward to do that,' the 37-year-old said. IGPL will be hosting India's first-ever professional league tour to feature both men and women playing on the same platform, competing across franchise teams and regional circuits. The integrated format not only redefines how golf is played in India but also reflects their commitment to promote inclusive excellence and athlete empowerment. From having the Indian cricket legend and golf enthusiast Yuvraj Singh as a co-owner and the brand ambassador, to signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Golf Union (IGU) — the official governing body for men's amateur golf in India - the IGPL has already made major moves to establish themselves as a premier league competition for men's, women's and amateur golf talent. Bhullar views the tournament as an opportunity to nurture, groom and spot fresh talent – and is eager to help in this endeavour. 'When I got the opportunity to be a captain of one of the teams, I thought I could mentor the next generation of Indian golfers. I am personally going to really enjoy this aspect. There are other icon stars with the likes of Shiv Kapur, Gaurav Ghei, SSP Chawrasia – who all have been veterans of the sport. This will be really beneficial for the young players to quicken their growth,' he further added. Further, to create an overall impact on the ecosystem and to funnel rising talent into the league, IGPL tour will be played across different cities in the build-up to the first edition of the league between September and December. 'One of the things that people don't realise is that golf is a very expensive sport. And for some of the youngsters to get a launchpad like the IGPL at early stages of their careers is immensely helpful. It's not just a ceremonial league. It's going to be very competitive and there's going to be serious prize money to win here,' Bhullar said. 'Hence, for some youngsters to come out and get that opportunity to make money and invest it in themselves, and then to go and play across different tournaments is a big thing. Because golf being an expensive sport, it's sometimes very difficult to have the resources to invest in your own game at the starting point of your career. I think that's something that the league will also do,' Bhullar added. IGPL also aims to transform the golf ecosystem by paving pathways for mentorship for amateurs by bringing on overseas talent and legends of the sport to give the best possible exposure and guidance for athletes. With a heavy focus on developing athletes at grassroots level and developing a pipeline of athletes, IGPL will also be tying up with various schools and universities in India. Boxing: Neeraj, Ishan Kataria, Yatri Patel, Priya to fight for gold after convincing wins in semis
Bangkok, Aug 6 (UNI) Neeraj (men's 75kg) and Ishan Kataria (men's 90+kg), Yatri Patel (women's 57kg), Priya (women's 60kg) registered convincing victories to reach the finals of their respective weight categories in the U22 Asian Boxing Championships 2025 here in Thailand today. Neeraj banked on his speed and counter attacks to defeat Kyeongho Bang of South Korea 5:0 to become the first Indian boxer to make it to the summit clash on Wednesday. Ishan Kataria then joined him in the final when he used his big frame and strong punches to dominate Chen Chen of China as the referee had to stop the contest in the third round as the Chinese was getting battered. Yatri Patel then became the first Indian women boxer to reach the final as she used the left-right combination punches to great effect to dominate Vietnam's Thi Nhung Quand to bag a 5:0 unanimous verdict in the women's 57kg semifinals. A few minutes later, Priya also came up with a dominating performance to overpower Uzbekistan's Odinakhon Ismoilova to reach the women's 60kg final. The U19 and U22 Asian Boxing Championships, which are being held simultaneously, provides India's rising stars a platform to showcase their skills and determination against some Asia's toughest opponents. India has fielded a strong contingent of 40 boxers — 20 in each age group — with a perfect mix of proven champions and potential talents who have impressed in the domestic circuit. Among the four other semi-finalists in the morning session, Rockey Chaudhary was unlucky as the referee did not allow him to continue in the second round as he suffered cuts over both his eyebrows against Iran's Sam Estaki. Harsh (60kg) and Mayur (90kg) took the fight to their respective opponents but could not finish on the right side of the split verdict from the judges. Harsh went down 1:4 against Uzbekistan's Shohruh Abdumalikov while Mayur lost to Shakhzod Polvonov of the same country. Ankush, the other boxer in fray, went down 0:5 against Sanzhar-Ali Begaliyev of Kazakhstan. All the four boxers will bring home a bronze medal. In the evening session, Bhawna Sharma could not rekindle her quarterfinal form and went down 1:4 against Robiyakhon Bakhtiyorova of Uzbekistan in the women's 48kg weight category.
