Malda: Two buses with about 100 migrant workers from the National Capital Region returned to South Dinajpur's Buniadpur on Monday after traversing a distance of more than 1,500 km over two days.
The passengers, who had arranged the private buses with their own money, said they had fled as they were afraid of being picked up by Delhi and Haryana cops on the suspicion of being Bangladeshis, tortured and forced to give up all their earnings to secure a release. Among them were several women who worked as domestic helps in Gurgaon.'s posh residential complexes.
Not all who made the return journey had faced detention in NCR, but each one had a story to tell of how "people dressed as cops" were picking up Bengali-speaking migrants at night, refusing to accept their IDs and demanding Rs 5-6 lakh for their release.
"We lived in Gurgaon for years with our families. We have all our documents to prove Indian citizenship. But we were still being being harassed by police and told to prove our identity. We were so scared that we hired a bus to return home," said Masud Karim, a resident of Rangapukur under Bangshihari police station

They are not accepting any documents. Either one has to pay them money or be kicked, abused and then jailed. I did not want to end up in a police station and decided to return home with my family."
Getting off the bus, Mojlesh Mollah said, "No document is a valid identity for the cops (in NCR). The more you keep showing, the more they keep asking. One cannot live in a place with the constant fear of being picked up by cops." Their fear of being harassed and thrown in a lockup is not misplaced.
Junaid Alam of Gedrigach village under Goalpokhor police station of North Dinajpur was employed in a carpet factory in Panipat for the past two years.
A few days back, he claimed, he was picked up by police and taken to Panipat police station. There, he was interrogated on his citizenship and pressed to confess that he was a Bangladeshi. When he refused, Alam alleged, he was brutally beaten up. His sustained a fracture in his leg in the police assault and was hospitalised.
His family managed to bring him home last Thursday.
Two other youths from Goalpokhor, Sabir Alam and Md Kabir, also met the same fate. A resident of Bijuvita village, Sabir returned home with a broken leg on Saturday night. He had been working in a carpet factory in Panipat for 15 years. On July 29, police came to the factory and checked his Aadhaar and EPIC. The next day, cops came again and picked him up. For three days, he was tortured in custody and suffered a fracture in his leg.
"They kept insisting that I confess that I was a Bangladeshi," he claimed. Kabir from Solpara village, however, has still not been able to return home. A video in which he claims being tortured by Panipat police and appeals for help has reached his family. Both alleged that cops took away all their money. State minister Golam Rabbani visited their families and assured help.
Trinamool Congress in a statement on Monday said, "They were beaten, abused and extorted by Delhi Police, which allegedly demanded bribes of ₹5–7 lakh for their release. These are Indian citizens, targeted solely for their language and identity. This is a hate-driven crackdown on the Bengali identity, enabled and emboldened by the Bangla Birodhi BJP regime. Delhi Police has turned into a tool of linguistic apartheid, criminalising Bangla, vilifying Bengalis, and extorting helpless workers.

Madras HC issues notice on PIL seeking safety check of grounded sulphur-laden ship at VOC Port

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court on Tuesday issued notice to central and state governments on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed seeking direction to conduct a safety inspection before allowing a ship, which ran aground while entering VOC Port in Thoothukudi, to leave Indian waters. Petitioner K Rajan, a former cargo ship captain from Kanniyakumari, stated that the ship MV NAVIX which was carrying over 39,000 tonnes of sulphur, ran aground on July 29, one mile away from the breakwater at the port entrance and remained grounded for two days, before being pulled back into the waters and berthed for unloading. Since the vessel carried hazardous cargo, it should be verified whether there was any environmental impact due to the grounding incident, he added. Romance to ruin: Bengaluru sees spike in dating scams

BENGALURU: Bengaluru is witnessing a surge in online dating scams, with fraudsters exploiting emotionally vulnerable individuals and drawing them into sophisticated financial frauds. What often begins as a search for love ends in heartbreak and financial ruin, as scammers exploit dating platforms to either extort victims or lure them into fraudulent investment schemes. Recently, a 32-year-old software engineer lost Rs 79.3 lakh after investing in a fake trading app, following the advice of a woman he met on a matrimonial website. In another case, a 37-year-old businessman lost Rs 5.5 lakh in a sextortion scam after connecting with a woman on a dating app. A senior officer from the cybercrime police station said dating fraud typically falls into two categories: honey-trap extortion (sextortion) and fraudulent trading schemes that trick victims into transferring money under the guise of investment opportunities. 'These women initiate warm, emotional conversations and gradually build trust,' the officer said. 'Eventually, they promise a future together, often even marriage.' Once the bond is established, often over several months, the victim is persuaded to invest in a fake trading platform. Many share personal financial struggles, including debts and loans, believing they are confiding in a partner. The scammers exploit these vulnerabilities, offering financial solutions that ultimately drain the victim's savings. The officer urged the public to avoid sharing personal or financial details with strangers online and to be cautious of anyone promising quick financial gains.

Two Indian-origin men drown in Colorado river

A late Sunday evening outing on August 3, 2025 in a waterbody turned fatal for two of the five picnickers in the scenic Topock Gorge of the Colorado river. 'The victims have been identified as Anoop Gankidi, 32 of Tempe, Arizona, and Venkata Mukkaala, 32 of Milpitas, California,' according to a statement released by Mohave County Sheriff's Office. The Indian-origin men had hired a rental pontoon which was parked on the edge of the river at the time of the incident. 'All five occupants of the boat had entered the water to cool off when three of them slipped underwater and began to struggle. One of the occupants was able to get back to the shallow area, however Gankidi and Mukkaala did not resurface,' says the statement by the Sheriff's office. San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department which was first to arrive at the scene deployed a diver. The SBCSD diver was able to locate and retrieve one of the missing men and tried life-saving measures before transporting the person to water safety centre. Both the men were transported to the Colorado River Medical Center in Needles but were pronounced deceased. Investigators said that the two victims had been underwater for approximately 20 minutes when divers arrived on scene and were located in approximately 12 feet of water. The men were not under influence, said the sheriff's office.
