Turkey and the Wolf is now open in Nashville; here's what to order
Turkey and the Wolf Icehouse opened in East Nashville officially March 1, with customers lined up down the block before the sandwich spot even flipped over the open sign.
This is the second location of Turkey and the Wolf for chef Mason Hereford. The first, located in New Orleans, had Bon Appetit's Andrew Knowlton waxing poetic over a collard green sandwich. The writer, claiming to have been rendered "drunk on mayo," also declared Turkey and the Wolf America's Best New Restaurant for 2017.
Except it wasn't just the mayo's influence. Food and Wine magazine recognized Turkey and the Wolf as one of the most important restaurants of the decade and declared, "This goofy-ass place is seriously excellent."
The place is seriously goofy, which is part of what makes it so charming. You may be handed a unicorn on a stick instead of a number to mark your table. Your cocktail may arrive in a Winnie the Pooh glass, your sandwich on a collectible McDonald's plate.
The opening menu is small, with additions to come, but for now your order is obvious: get that collard green sandwich. It's vaguely Reuben-like with its toasted rye, cherry pepper Russian dressing and melty Swiss cheese. There's also some crunchy slaw and then the umami-rich, slow-cooked collards that make this sandwich what it is. And this is a sandwich you need in your life.
And also don't sleep on that spicy-sweet cabbage salad, with thinly sliced jalapeños and a dressing of coconut milk, fish sauce and Sriracha punched up with lime, herbs, tamarind. It's finished with fried garlic and toasted sesame seeds and it's simply fantastic.
Not as show-stopping but still very good is the restaurant's wedge salad, which comes absolutely smothered with garlicky everything bagel seasoning, blue cheese dressing, fresh dill and crunchy bits of bacon over perfectly chilled iceberg lettuce. It's perfectly refreshing.
The restaurant's Mama Tried burger, an ode to a Big Mac, special sauce and all (which is undoubtedly Duke's heavy), is exactly what you'd expect: a messy, drippy burger that you want to eat on Turkey and the Wolf's huge, pretty outdoor space which will surely be full at all times when the weather warms.
The bologna sandwich is massive, and served on slabs of buttery toasted white bread. It's texturally fantastic with its shredded iceberg lettuce, crisp house-made potato chips and fried bologna, though the sweet-hot mustard is sweeter than you'd expect.
More additions to the menu are on the way.
You can buy beer by the bucket from Bud to Bell's Two-Hearted. There are some basic mixed drinks including a Ford's gin and tea with lemon and a Barq's and Buffalo Trace bourbon.
There are more frozen drinks coming in time for the warmer weather. But for now grab yourself a seriously refreshing frozen French 75, a sweet, lemony gin and champagne concoction, frozen and blended.
It's perfect for a lazy weekend afternoon.

When: Hours are limited for now, but will expand. Currently, the restaurant is open 11 a.m.-4 p.m., closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

‘Ballerina' review: Ana de Armas leads a bloody ‘John Wick' spinoff
The new 'John Wick' spinoff 'Ballerina' is recommendable, -ish, primarily for the way Anjelica Huston, as the Russian mob boss, makes a meal out of a single-syllable word near the end, delivered after a pause so unerringly timed it's almost too good for this world. We don't deserve it. This fifth and fairly diverting movie in the assassin's-revenge franchise is not much interested in what anyone has to say — although Keanu Reeves says what little he has to say in rivetingly off-human ways — but Huston blurts her game-over syllable with the 'oh, authority of an acting titan. 'Ballerina' screenwriter Shay Hatten dreams up a simple story taking place between the events of 'John Wick' Chapters 3 and 4. In a prologue, little Eve (Victoria Comte) is orphaned after her assassin father is killed in an attack from a rival underworld gang, members of which have a conspicuous 'X' branded on their wrists. Eve's taken under the protection of Wick's sometime-affiliates, the Ruska Roma. The years pass, she's Ana de Armas, she's long past ballet training even though she's still carrying around her wind-up ballerina doll, and she's ready to concentrate on killing. And that's the movie: She wants the killers of her late killer father killed, personally, by her. It's no spoiler: This is where Reeves as Wick comes in handy, dispensing helpful/cryptic/annoying/supercool life lessons in tiny little sentences. Mostly Eve goes it alone, taking care of unworthy assailants of every type, including the deadliest barista alive. Reportedly, the late adds to the final cut of 'Ballerina' reinstated some extensive, relatively complex action sequences. They're pretty fair for what they are, meaning: They're stunt-driven, sometimes, and digitally futzed and stitched and glossed other times. You rarely get the kind of clean, inventive propulsion generated by that amazing 'John Wick 3' opener in the rare-books emporium, or the best bits in the Paris staircase marathon in '4.' How's de Armas? She's OK. Sometimes better, but rarely holding the screen or activating the human element in any surprising ways. It's not her fault that Eve has so little emotional or psychological detail to go on; it's not in the script, which is both straightforward and filmable (I mean, they did film it) and as thin as Dollar Store printing paper. As for the finale, well, it's a little too in love with the obvious lust object of 'Ballerina': the superhot flamethrower brandished by Eve as she incinerates a dutiful roster of village assassins. The movie hits sincere variations on the themes of fate and family, practically begging for a 'Fast & Furious' crossover project. But 'Ballerina' really can't wait to get to the flames. A fairy tale in Paris: French wild card Boisson stuns No. 6 Andreeva to reach French Open semis
The run continues for the 361st-ranked Loïs Boisson at Roland-Garros. After taking down third-seeded Jessica Pegula in the previous round, the French wild-card entry upset sixth-ranked Mirra Andreeva 7-6 (6), 6-3 Wednesday in front of a boisterous and largely partisan crowd to reach the semifinals of the French Open. A year ago, Boisson tore the ACL in her left knee just a week before her home Grand Slam tournament started, preventing her from accepting an invitation to play. On Thursday, she will have the chance to advance to the final. 'It's incredible, no matter what, given what happened last year and all the difficult moments I went through,' Boisson said during her post-match interview. The 22-year-old Boisson was largely unknown outside tennis circles before capturing the spotlight in Paris. She is playing in her first Grand Slam main draw and became the first woman to reach the semifinals at her debut major tournament since 1989, when Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati both did it at the French Open. She is also the youngest French semifinalist at a Grand Slam event since Amelie Mauresmo at Wimbledon in 1999. The last Frenchwoman to win the title at Roland-Garros was Mary Pierce, 25 years ago. The first set was marked by momentum swings and brilliant shot-making from both players. Boisson twice found herself down a break but fought back each time, using heavy spin and deep groundstrokes to trouble her Russian opponent. Andreeva grew visibly tense on key points, struggling to maintain her composure and wasting a chance to close out the set when up 5-3. Despite saving three set points and forcing a tiebreaker, she ultimately handed the set to Boisson with two consecutive backhand errors. Andreeva responded strongly at the start of the second set, racing to a 3-0 lead. But Boisson broke back with a thunderous backhand winner down the line, drawing a roar of approval from the lively crowd. Andreeva received a warning after netting a routine forehand volley and angrily hitting a ball into the stands. She then argued with the umpire over a call that gave Boisson three break points. Andreeva saved the first one with a forehand winner then double-faulted, and never recovered. 'The first set was super intense, and I was really struggling at the start of the second, but I managed to regroup and finish like that,' said Boisson, who will make a big jump in the rankings. Having reached a career high of No. 152 last year before her knee injury, Boisson will climb at least to No. 68 on Monday. And that could be even higher if she manages to pull off a third straight shocker against the No. 2-seeded Coco Gauff in the semifinals. French wildcard Lois Boisson makes history at Roland Garros with semi-final spot
Lois Boisson drank in her French Open fairytale after becoming the first wildcard to reach the semi-finals – and then planned an even more glorious encore. The 22-year-old Frenchwoman, ranked 361 in the world, followed up her win over third seed Jessica Pegula with a 7-6 (6) 6-3 victory over Russian world number six Mirra Andreeva. Advertisement Boisson dropped to the clay with her hands over her eyes in emotional scenes on a packed, ecstatic Court Philippe-Chatrier. 'I'm just proud of myself, because it was really tough for me to go into the semi-final,' she said. 'Every match was really tough, so I'm just proud about how it ends every time. And proud about what I do on the court.' Boisson's earnings from the year so far were £15,000, and she has now pocketed £580,000 for her fortnight's work in Paris. Her run has echoes of Emma Raducanu's charge through qualifying to win the US Open in 2021. If she goes on to win it, it would be even more unbelievable, as Raducanu was at least on the radar having reached the fourth round at Wimbledon before her New York triumph. Andreeva said: 'I think that the way I managed to kind of not react to anything in the first set – I think that if I would have been able to do this throughout the whole match, would have been great.' The 21-year-old faces arguably an even bigger test on Thursday against an inspired Boisson and 15,000 raucous Parisians on Court Philippe-Chatrier. 'I think it's just something that I will mentally prepare for if it were to happen and expect and be ready for.'
