SEOUL, May 29 (UPI) -- South Korea's stock market has been ruled by traditional manufacturing companies, including Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Hyundai Motor.
However, KB Financial Group has broken into the top five firms by market capitalization this month, nudging past the country's largest automaker, Hyundai Motor, and defense giant Hanwha Aerospace.
The financial group's market capitalization climbed to $28.91 billion Monday to overtake Hanwha Aerospace, with $28.63 billion, and Hyundai Motor, with $27.69 billion.
Although Hanwha Aerospace reclaimed the No. 5 spot Tuesday, KB rebounded Wednesday. This marks the first time in roughly 15 years that KB Financial has become one of the five most valuable corporations in the Seoul bourse.
"Most of all, KB Financial's profitability is outstanding, which has supported its share price since 2024," Hana Securities analyst Choi Jeong-wook told UPI.
"Its diversified portfolio is also attractive. Many of its subsidiaries are leaders in their respective businesses. Its non-banking units accounted for some 40% of the total profits last year," he said.
KB Financial netted $3.6 billion in profit last year, becoming South Korea's first financial company to reach the milestone. During the first quarter of this year, its bottom line amounted to $1.18 billion, up 62.9% from a year earlier.
In the beginning of 2023, KB Financial trailed far behind Hyundai Motor, ranking 18th with a market capitalization of $15.88 billion against the latter's $31.32 billion.
Since then, however, KB Financial's share price has nearly doubled to beat Hyundai Motor, which lost more than 10% during the span.
The group's flagship unit is KB Kookmin Bank, South Korea's largest lender. Also under its umbrella are KB Kookmin Card, KB Securities, KB Insurance and KB Life Insurance.
"Investor sentiment has been buoyed by KB Financial's embrace of the value-up program designed to boost the stock price," NH Investment & Securities analyst Jung Jun-seop said in a phone interview.
In addition, the company recently disclosed s stock buyback plan -- a measure that "seems to win the hearts and minds of investors at home and abroad. The stabilizing foreign exchange rate also helps it," he added.
The value-up program is the Korean government's initiative aimed at addressing the so-called "Korea Discount," which refers to the tendency of Korean stocks to trade at low valuations despite strong fundamentals.
The Seoul administration has tried to encourage enterprises here to strengthen their corporate governance and improve capital allocation to deal with the Korea Discount.
KB Financial was recently honored with the top prize in a government-held value-up award ceremony. Last month, the entity canceled 12 million shares, which were valued at $740 million.
In his recent report, SK Securities analyst Seol Yong-jin said that KB Financial has enjoyed a premium, thanks to its status as a business bellwether.
"KB Financial has demonstrated an advantage over its competitors in terms of foreign investor inflows," he wrote.
As of Wednesday, foreign investors' net purchases of KB Financial stood at around $870 million for the month.
Still, challenges remain, according to some observers.
"Like its smaller competitors, KB Financial has failed to make its presence felt in the global market. The outfit mostly focuses on the domestic market," Seoul-based consultancy Leaders Index CEO Park Ju-gun said.
"In addition, KB Financial depends too heavily on interest profits. The lowered key interest rate is feared to weigh on the group at least in the short term," he predicted.
The Bank of Korea slashed its benchmark interest rate by 0.25% points to 2.5% Thursday. It was the central bank's fourth cut in seven months since last October.
Globally, KB Financial is also recognized as a proactive sponsor of professional golfers, who play on the LPGA Tour. It backs Park In-bee, who topped the podium in the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.

South Korea exports fall as tariffs hit U.S., China shipments
South Korea's exports fell in May for the first time in four months, as shipments to the United States and China dropped on global trade conflict triggered by U.S. President Donald Trump's sweeping tariffs. Exports from Asia's fourth-largest economy, an early bellwether for global trade, declined 1.3% from the same month last year to $57.27 billion, government data showed on Sunday. "Declines in exports to both the United States and China, the two biggest markets, suggest U.S. tariff measures are having an impact on the global economy as well as our exports," said South Korean Industry and Trade Minister Ahn Duk-geun. The first decline since January followed rises as strong chip sales had offset downward pressure from Trump's tariff threats. The May decline, however, was milder than the 2.7% fall forecast in a Reuters poll of economists. On a working-day adjusted basis, exports in fact rose 1.0%. China and the United States agreed in mid-May to a 90-day truce, significantly unwinding their tariffs on each other, after months of back-and-forth retaliatory measures, but Trump on Friday accused Beijing of violating the agreement and threatened to take tougher action. He also said he would double global tariffs on steel and aluminum to 50%. Trump's "reciprocal tariffs", including 25% duties on South Korea, are on a 90-day pause for negotiations. South Korea's May shipments to the United States fell 8.1% and those to China fell 8.4%. Exports to the European Union rose 4.0%, those to Southeast Asian countries fell 1.3%, while those to Taiwan surged 49.6%. Exports of semiconductors jumped 21.2%, thanks to robust demand for advanced memory chips, but car exports fell 4.4% due to U.S. tariffs and production at Hyundai Motor's new factory in the U.S. state of Georgia, according to the ministry. South Korea's imports fell 5.3% to $50.33 billion, bringing the monthly trade balance to a surplus of $6.94 billion, the biggest since June 2024.

A New Italian Spot Hopes to Comfort Lincoln Park After The End of Tarantino's 30-Year-Run
Another Lincoln Park stalwart fell by the wayside when Tarantino's closed in March, ending three decades along Armitage Avenue. The neighborhood's restaurant scene has seen changes in recent times, and three decades seems to be a magic number. Pizza Capri closed its own 30-year run earlier this year when it moved to Avondale. Goose Island Beer Co. moved on from its original brewpub, relocating to the Salt Shed earlier in 2024 after a 35-year run on Clybourn. As Tarantino's wished farewell to its clientele, word spread that Cornerstone Restaurant Group planned to open a new project in the space. Cornerstone's Chicago-area restaurants include chef and partner Bill Kim's Urbanbelly, The Table at Crate, and Bill Kim's Ramen Bar inside Time Out Market Chicago. Cornerstone is also known for its partnership with Michael Jordan, running MJ's Mag Mile steakhouse, plus locations across the country and South Korea. In Lincoln Park, the company wants to retain Tarantino's customers and lure new ones with Dimmi Dimmi Corner Italian, pegged for a summer opening at 1112 W. Armitage Avenue. Executive chef Matt Eckfield worked with Kim, splitting about 13 years at Belly Shack (the chef's shuttered Puerto Rican and Korean restaurant in Bucktown) and Belly Q (the shuttered Korean barbecue-style spot in West Loop). Eckfield left Chicago for New York's Major Food Group, working as one of the conglomerate's executive chefs, spending nearly 12 years with its famous Italian American brands like Carbone, Contessa, and ZZ's Club. Eckfield is hopeful to make use of produce from Green City Market, the farmers market held weekly in the summer, just east of the restaurant and toward the lake. Eckfield wouldn't spill on menu specifics other than saying customers, including Tarantino's regulars, will recognize the food. Expect a mix of pastas made on premises and seasonal veggies. There will be sandwiches. Eckfield is excited to pump out some focaccia, saying that while most anyone can make the flatbread, few folks can bake focaccia that actually tastes good. 'There's not going to be tweezer work,' the chef says. Former Boka Restaurant Group pastry chef Casey Doody is handling dessert recipes with gelato, cakes, and more. So Lincoln Park is experiencing a renaissance. Dimmi Dimmi, which means 'tell me, tell me,' in Italian, should open in late July or early August. Another notable nearby opening comes near the busy Halsted and Clybourn intersection, where a group of experienced restaurant veterans is working on Brick & Mortar inside the former Golden Ox and Burger Bar space. AI Crypto Livepeer Explodes 150% on Upbit Listing
The native token of Livepeer LPT, a decentralized artificial intelligence video processing protocol, soared on Friday to its strongest price in four months on exchange listing and other catalyst. The token advanced 150% over the past 24 hours, hitting a session high at $14.20, CoinDesk data shows. The surge defied a slump in the broader crypto market, with bitcoin BTC sliding 2% below $106,000 and the CoinDesk 20 Index declining 3.5% during the same period. Most artificial intelligence-linked tokens were down 5%-10%. The price action happened as popular Korean exchange Upbit introduced trading with the token against KRW and Tether's USDT on its platform earlier on Friday. Joel Kruger, a crypto market strategist, highlighted that asset manager Grayscale introduced earlier this week its Artificial Intelligence Crypto Sector, with Livepeer being included among the 20 cryptocurrencies. Ecosystem developer Livepeer Foundation's advisory boards also kicked into gear, starting a community survey about the platform's strategic direction, he pointed out.
