West Bengal: BJP leader arrested for allegedly stealing gold from jewellery shop; TMC shares his pics with major leaders

Mint5 hours ago

Somnath Sahoo, a BJP leader from West Bengal, has been arrested for allegedly stealing 100 grams of gold from a jewellery shop. The incident has caused a stir in West Midnapore's political circle.
Trinamool Congress (TMC) shared a clip of the alleged incident on social media.
'Locals caught him while he was trying to flee and handed him over to the police,' it wrote on Twitter (now X).
'The party that claims to be the guardian of law and order is busy sheltering criminals!' Mamata Banerjee's party added.
TMC State General Secretary Kunal Ghosh claimed on social media that the BJP Yuva Morcha leader from Habibpur had been caught by Odisha Police while stealing jewellery worth ₹ 25 lakh.
'CCTV footage exposes him. Locals caught him while he was trying to flee and handed him over to the police,' Ghosh wrote while sharing the accused's photo with BJP State President, Sukanta Majumdar, also Minister of State for Education of India. He also shared Sahoo's photo with actor-turned-politician Hiran Chatterjee, a BJP MLA.
'What link does the BJP State President have with a thief? Has he got a share? Clarify please. Whether these are facts or not,' Ghosh added.
Sujoy Hazra, West Midnapore district TMC president, has mocked the BJP.
'BJP leaders are involved in human trafficking, drugs, and gold smuggling. This man says he's not with the BJP, but in this district, the BJP hardly exists. If you check, you'll find many BJP workers with similar shady records,' he said.
BJP has claimed that Somnath Sahoo was once associated with the party but holds no post now. It added that Odisha, a BJP-ruled state, had arrested him without bias. That should be a lesson for Bengal's ruling party about good governance, it added.
According to Anandabazar Patrika sources, Somnath was caught while trying to flee after stealing from a jewellery store in Jaleswar, Odisha. TMC claims he still holds the post of district youth wing secretary in the BJP.
BJP's district spokesperson Arup Das denied any current link with Somnath. However, he claims Somnath's name may still appear on the party list because a new committee has yet to be formed.
'He was once connected to the BJP, but there's been no contact for over a year and a half,' the publication quoted Das as saying.
'TMC has no right to speak about such issues. They shelter murderers and rapists.' Arup added.
MLA Hiran Chattopadhyay has said he doesn't feel awkward.
'Odisha BJP government and its police acted without bias and arrested a criminal. I praise them. The photo seems to be from the 2021 election campaign. Hundreds took photos with me. I can't know who among them is a thief or not,' he said.

BSP, SP oppose any move to remove 'Secular' and 'Socialist' from Preamble of Constitution

Lucknow, June 28 (UNI) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) have opposed any move by the BJP to amend the Constitution to remove the words "Secular" and "Socialist" from the Preamble of the Constitution. Both the parties threatened to launch an agitation if a "conspiracy was hatched to amend the Constitution". BSP supremo Mayawati while talking to reporters here today warned the BJP and the Congress over the debate on the Constitution. She said that it seems that the BSP will have to raise its voice against these parties across the country. Mayawati said that Babasaheb Ambedkar had given a "humanitarian" Constitution to the country by spending his entire life. "But, the first Congress party and now the BJP government never implemented it with full devotion. Both parties and their supporters mostly emphasised the ideology of their respective party. Unnecessary changes were made from time to time in the constitution," she alleged. "Anyway, all the words used in the Indian Constitution and its Preamble, they satisfy the soul of the country and have been implemented in the country only after much understanding, long and deep thinking and now it is not right to tamper with them as it will be grossly inappropriate," she added. BSP chief Mayawati alleged that "there is something else in the heart of both parties and something else on their tongue". Mayawati said that parties should rise above their narrow thought and avoid tampering with the Constitution. BSP supremo also said that politics in the name of language going on in many states of the country is not good. "All languages should be respected," she said. On the issue of voters list controversy in Bihar, Mayawati said the Election Commission should clarify its position and the political parties should be taken into confidence before launching any new decision. Reacting on the rape of a student in Kolkata, she said that women are not completely safe anywhere in the entire country, including West Bengal. In this matter too, the central and all state governments must pay attention, she said. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said here today that, 'Those opposing reservations are also opposing socialism and secularism words in the Constitution. The BJP had opposed these principles since its inception. Today, they continue spreading hatred because they cannot attack the Constitution directly. So they oppose secularism and socialism instead.' Akhilesh Yadav further said that, "The excuse for the two words is actually the goal of the BJP and their fellow colleagues to remove the entire Constitution." "That is why if the Constitution is to be saved, then the BJP has to be removed," he stressed. UNI XC RN

Congress says the BJP is delaying implementing 27% OBC reservation in Madhya Pradesh

Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being against the Backward Classes, the Congress on Saturday (June 28 2025), alleged that the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh has been wilfully delaying passing on the benefits of 27% reservation in State government jobs and institutions despite a law enacted by the State Assembly. The party demanded immediate implementation of 27% reservation for the OBCs in Madhya Pradesh as it has been categorically cleared by the Supreme Court of India as well. Addressing a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters, senior party leaders, including former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, AICC in-charge for Madhya Pradesh Harish Chaudhary, MP Congress chief Jitu Patwari, and the head of the Congress's OBC department Anil JaiHind, said the delay in implementing the reservation is revealing the State government's anti-reservation and anti-Backward Class mindset. Mr. Chaudhary said in 1994, the Congress government had provided 14% reservation to the OBCs and subsequently, in 2003, proposed the quota to be raised to 27%. However, since then, the BJP has been in power in the State and it never took any decision to implement the decision. When the Kamal Nath government was formed in December 2018, it brought an Ordinance to provide 27% reservation for OBCs in 2019. 'The BJP challenged it in court, which then directed that a law be enacted on the matter. We subsequently got the Bill passed in the Assembly. But the BJP formed the government again, and it did not implement the reservation,' Mr. Chaudhary said, adding that the pleas against the 27% quota were by the High Court and the Supreme Court as well. Chhattisgarh issue Mr. Baghel said that the Congress government in Chhattisgarh had unanimously passed a law in December 2022 for providing 27% reservation to the OBCs, but the Bill is still to get the nod of the Governor. 'This is because the BJP does not want to provide 27% reservation to the OBCs,' the former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister said. 'We will not only fight the issue legally, but will raise it publicly to build pressure on the BJP government to implement it,' he added. Mr. Patwari said that it was strange that Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he belonged to the OBCs but was not providing the community its rightful due. 'The OBC Chief Ministers of MP belonging to the BJP, including Uma Bharti, Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Mohan Yadav, have all betrayed their own community,' he said.

Work begins on ‘Greater Ghaziabad' plan; Khoda, Loni, Muradnagar likely to merge

The Ghaziabad district administration has begun preparing a roadmap for the proposed 'Greater Ghaziabad' project, under which local bodies such as Khoda, Loni, and Muradnagar may be merged into the Ghaziabad municipal corporation. The move comes following directions from Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath, who floated the idea during a visit to the district on Thursday, officials said. According to officials, the Ghaziabad Development Authority has already included Ghaziabad, Loni, Muradnagar, and Modinagar in its integrated draft Master Plan 2031. (HT Archive) The chief minister was in Ghaziabad to inaugurate a data centre at Central Electronics Limited and to visit Kailash Mansarovar Bhawan in Indirapuram. Addressing an event, he emphasised integrated development and proposed the formation of a larger municipal entity named Greater Ghaziabad. The proposal will require both legislative approval and a cabinet nod, with the final decision resting with the state government. 'On directions of the chief minister, we have asked the officials of the district administration and the corporation to chalk out a plan, which will then be submitted to the state government,' said Deepak Meena, district magistrate of Ghaziabad. 'The final decision will be taken at the state government level and will also involve the state cabinet.' The Ghaziabad district currently comprises nine local bodies—one municipal corporation, four Nagar Palikas (Khoda, Loni, Modinagar, and Muradnagar), and four Nagar Panchayats (Patla, Dasna, Faridnagar, and Niwari). In 2023, ahead of the inauguration of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) priority section in Ghaziabad, BJP MLAs Sunil Sharma (Sahibabad) and Nandkishor Gurjar (Loni) had raised concerns about civic issues in Khoda and Loni to the chief minister. While BJP leaders support the proposed merger, some political opponents have criticised it as a reaction to electoral losses. Former MLA Amarpal Sharma, whose wife Mohini Sharma currently chairs the Khoda Nagar Palika, said, 'After the BJP lost the Khoda chairperson seat in 2023, its politicians floated the concept of merger. The corporation itself struggles to manage its jurisdiction areas, and managing Khoda and Loni would be a tough task. People in Khoda are yet to get tapped water supply and face many other civic issues like bad roads, sewerage disposal, proper drainage, etc., after repeated promises for years.' In the May 2023 civic polls, the BJP won the Ghaziabad mayoral seat but lost the chairperson elections in Loni, Khoda, and Muradnagar Nagar Palikas. The party managed to retain only the Modinagar chairperson seat. Nandkishor Gurjar, BJP MLA from Loni, dismissed allegations of political motivation. 'The local bodies proposed by the CM for merger under the corporation suffer many issues like water-logging, bad roads, drinking water shortages, sewerage problems, among others,' he said. 'Since these areas will see massive housing development in the future, it is vital that these areas also get developed like Ghaziabad city. Further, they will also be able to receive big funds for development. So, it is vital that they become part of Greater Ghaziabad.' Meanwhile, Ranjita Dhama, the chairperson of Loni Nagar Palika, did not respond to requests for comment. According to officials, the Ghaziabad Development Authority has already included Ghaziabad, Loni, Muradnagar, and Modinagar in its integrated draft Master Plan 2031.
