"Angie Stone will stand proud alongside Lauryn Hill as a songwriter, producer and singer with all the props in place to become a grande dame of the R&B world in the next decade," Billboard magazine wrote in 1999.

By then, Ms. Stone was an industry veteran — not only as a singer, but as a songwriter for, and collaborator with, some of her era's biggest acts.
She first emerged as a member of the Sequence, which she formed in 1978 with Cheryl Cook and Gwendolyn Chisolm. It was the first female group signed to Sugar Hill Records, the label that put rap on the map with the single "Rapper's Delight" (1979) by the Sugarhill Gang.
The trio lasted only a few years, but in that time, it released several seminal rap singles, including 'Funk You Up' (1979) and 1981′s 'Funky Sound (Tear the Roof Off),' which have been sampled by Ice Cube, En Vogue, Dr. Dre, and other artists.
Ms. Stone then spent more than a decade as a songwriter, backup singer, and band member for prominent acts such as Mary J. Blige, Lenny Kravitz, and D'Angelo. She was busy, and successful, but she found the anonymity of working behind the scenes frustrating.
"I knew it wasn't my talent, because everybody wanted a piece of me for something," she told the Los Angeles Times in 2000. "After a while, I started to feel used. I thought, 'If I'm good enough to help Mary, and to do this and that, what is the problem?'"

Part of the issue was timing. Ms. Stone had been a member of two R&B acts — Vertical Hold and Devox — in the early 1990s, but their sound was considered out of sync with the mainstream. It was only after breakout hits by the likes of Hill and Badu later in the decade that Ms. Stone received the attention she thought she deserved.
'I really think that I was ahead of my time,' she told the Associated Press in 1999. 'My music caught up to time, or time caught up to my music.'
Angela Laverne Brown was born Dec. 18, 1961, in Columbia, S.C. She started singing at an early age at her church, where her father, Bobby Williams, a lawyer's assistant, was part of a gospel quartet. Her mother, Iona (Brown) Williams, was a hospital technician.
In 1979, Ms. Stone, Cook, and Chisolm sneaked backstage at a concert in Columbia where Sylvia Robinson, a founder of Sugar Hill Records, was seated.
They auditioned then and there, and Robinson, impressed, said she would sign them to her label. They moved to New York and began recording.
Ms. Stone's marriage to Rodney Stone, who performed under the stage name Lil' Rodney C with the rap group Funky Four Plus One, ended in divorce.
She leaves her daughter from that marriage, Diamond Stone; a son from her relationship with D'Angelo, Michael D'Angelo Archer II; and two grandchildren.
Ms. Stone had Type 2 diabetes, and she spoke openly about her efforts to lose weight. In 2006, she appeared on the television show 'Celebrity Fit Club,' losing 18 pounds over the course of the season.

She branched out into acting in the 2000s, with roles in "The Hot Chick" (2002), with Rob Schneider; "The Fighting Temptations" (2003), with Cuba Gooding Jr.; and "Ride Along" (2014), with Kevin Hart and Ice Cube. Onstage, she appeared as the prison matron Mama Morton in the Broadway production of "Chicago" in 2003.
She also had small roles in several TV series, including "Girlfriends," starring Tracee Ellis Ross, for which she sang the opening theme.
Ms. Stone recorded 10 studio albums, most recently 'Love Language' (2023). Among the 11 tracks is 'Old Thang Back,' which features her son, who performs under the name Swayvo Twain.

Kid Rock Goes ‘Nutz' Over California Gov. Gavin Newsom's Fake Endorsement Poster

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has been on an all-caps roll lately trolling the Trump White House. In a series of cap-locked Truth Social-like screeds, Newsom's press office account has expertly approximated the shouting out the window tone of many of Donald Trump's social missives while taking aim at the President, his administration members and Fox News supporters in satirical screeds on X. But over the weekend Newsom appeared to cross a line when he brought vocal Trump pal Kid Rock into the fray. In a clearly Photoshopped poster mimicking the iconic Uncle Sam Wants You WWI Army recruitment posters, Newsom's team threw up an image of Rock in a red, white and blue top hat and matching suit in front of the American flag with the message 'Kid Rock Wants You to Support Gavin Newsom.' As you might expect, Rock, 54, didn't love it. In a response post, the 'Don't Tell Me How to Live' singer wrote, 'The only support Gavin Newscum will ever get out of me is from DEEZ NUTZ,' repurposing one of Trump's pet nicknames for the California politician. Newsom went all-in this week on his challenge to Trump's call for off-cycle redistricting in Texas to hold on to Republican's slim House next year by asking Californians to vote on redistricting in the Golden State. The Rock AI post appeared to be a call-back to a Trump post from last year in which the former reality TV star shared a clearly cooked-up images of Taylor Swift falsely claiming that the singer had endorsed him. Trump has since repeatedly said he 'hates' Swift, recently lashing out at the world's biggest pop star by claiming that he 'can't stand her (HATE!)' and that she is 'NO LONGER HOT.' Newsom didn't miss that opportunity to troll either, with the Governor's press office writing on Tuesday (Aug. 19), 'I HATE KID ROCK !!!' Jack White Rips Donald Trump's ‘Vulgar, Gold-Leafed and Gaudy' White House Makeover, Comparing it To ‘Wrestler's Dressing Room'

Jack White has some thoughts on the gilding of the White House. The rocker who opened a bespoke upholstery shop in Detroit in the mid 1990s before launching his music career — and who has long had a keen eye for visual aesthetics — went scorched earth on Donald Trump's gold-plated makeover of the People's House in a no-holds-barred Instagram post on Tuesday (Aug. 19). 'Look at how disgusting trump has transformed the historic White House. It's now a vulgar, gold leafed and gaudy, professional wrestler's dressing room,' White said of the makeover Trump has rolled out for the White House, which includes all-gold-everything in the Oval Office. 'Can't wait for the UFC match on the front lawn too, he's almost fully achieved the movie Idiocracy,' White added in reference to Trump's plans to hold a ultimate fighting match on the White House grounds next year and the beloved 2006 Mike Judge movie satire of a world in which anti-intellectual, lowest-common-denominator dolts inherit the Earth. 'Look at his disgusting taste, would you even buy a used car from this conman, let alone give him the nuclear codes?' White asked. More from Billboard Kid Rock Goes 'Nutz' Over California Gov. Gavin Newsom's Fake Endorsement Poster Judas Priest's Rob Halford Said He Was 'Curled Up in a Ball' Weeping in Reaction to Ozzy Osbourne's Death Australian Country Star Troy Cassar-Daley Saluted With Excellence In The Community Award In a clever side slam, White tagged Trump with a link to professional wrestling legend 'Nature Boy' Ric Flair's Instagram feed in the post, in which he also took aim a the many ways the president is abrogating norms by profiting from his second tenure in office. 'A gold plated trump bible would look perfect up on that mantle with a pair of trump shoes on either side wouldn't it?' White wrote. 'What an embarrassment to American history. Also pictured in this photograph, a REAL leader of a nation in a black suit.' The post featured a photo of Trump meeting with Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy this week in the dizzyingly filigreed Oval Office. In keeping with the wrestling metaphor, White House communications director Steven Cheung attempted his own smack down of the 12-time Grammy-winning rocker who is slated to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the White Stripes in November. 'Jack White is a washed-up, has-been loser posting drivel on social media because he clearly has ample time on his hands due to his stalled career,' Cheung told The Daily Beast. 'It's apparent he's been masquerading as a real artist, because he fails to appreciate, and quite frankly disrespects, the splendor and significance of the Oval Office inside of 'The People's House.'' At press time it appeared White had not responded to Cheung's comments. In May, photo editor and creative consultant Emily Keegin wrote an essay in The New York Times entitled 'Trump's Oval Office is a Gilded Rococo Nightmare. Help,' in which she noted that in 2017 journalist Peter York referred to Trump's shiny aesthetic as 'dictator chic,' likening the former reality TV star's New York penthouse style to that of late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi's opulent, garish mansions. In the commentary, Keegin described the 14K White House redesign as, 'a parade of golden objects that march across the mantel, relegating the traditional Swedish ivy to a greenhouse. Gilded Rococo wall appliqués, nearly identical to the ones at Mr. Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate, are stuck to the fireplace and office walls with the same level of aesthetic consideration a child gives her doll's face before covering it in nail polish.' She also posted a Bible passage and reposted a message thanking God for waking her up today. Tamar Braxton had been active in 2025, hitting the road for a North American tour in the spring with October London. She also dropped off a single in May with 'You on You' hitting streaming services and she performed at ESSENCE Festival in July.
