A supercar once celebrated as America's fastest vehicle met an explosive and controversial end over the weekend—by design.
The 2007 SSC Ultimate Aero, which set a Guinness-verified production car speed record in 2007 by reaching 256.14 mph, was destroyed during the 'Thunder at the Mountain' monster truck rally in West Richland, Washington. The act was reportedly carried out at the behest of its owner, who instructed organizers that the car must not survive the event intact.
The car was crushed by multiple monster trucks, then torn apart by a mechanical 'dragon' wrecker and finally torched by a flamethrower, leaving little more than carbon-fiber shards and charred remains.
The move stunned members of the automotive community, including SSC North America founder Jerod Shelby, who called the destruction 'a shameful loss of automotive history.'
'There are only 24 of these cars in existence, and this one set a world record that dethroned Bugatti,' Shelby said in a statement to media. 'It was a symbol of American engineering.'
Launched in 2007, the SSC Ultimate Aero was powered by a twin-turbocharged 6.3-liter V8 that produced 1,180 horsepower. In September of that year, the car overtook the Bugatti Veyron's top speed record on a closed stretch of road in Washington State. Chuck Bigelow, then 72, piloted the run without a helmet, backed by a small team of engineers.
Though the engine had been removed before the rally stunt, the car's body and provenance remained intact. The destruction appears to stem from a personal dispute between the car's anonymous owner and the manufacturer, although specific details have not been disclosed.
With the car now gone, only 23 Ultimate Aeros remain. Automotive historians say the loss erases a tangible piece of modern American racing heritage.
'It's the equivalent of lighting the Wright brothers' plane on fire,' one enthusiast remarked.

Why Canada's Roads Are Getting Safer While U.S. Traffic Deaths Rise

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has released a new report showing that the United States is struggling to curb road deaths - while Canada is steadily pulling ahead. The study, done in collaboration with Canada's Traffic Injury Research Foundation, reveals a 33% increase in U.S. traffic fatalities from 2011 to 2021. Over the same period, Canadian fatalities dropped by 18%, despite having more drivers and vehicle miles gap has led the IIHS to push its "30x30" initiative - a national campaign aiming to cut roadway deaths by 30% before the end of the decade. The group says Canada's safety record proves it's possible, if the U.S. is willing to adopt proven policies and enforce them consistently. One of the clearest differences between the two countries lies in the application of safety laws. Canadian provinces have rolled out broad distracted driving bans, comprehensive seat belt requirements (including for rear passengers), and lower legal blood alcohol limits. Speed cameras and red-light enforcement are also more common and better maintained across Canada than in many U.S. measures may seem minor, but they add up. The IIHS found that vulnerable road users - like cyclists and pedestrians - saw a 17% decline in deaths in Canada, while U.S. fatalities in those categories jumped by 64%. Truck-involved deaths rose 54% in the U.S. but fell 24% north of the border. Among young drivers, Canada posted a 52% drop in fatalities, compared to a 17% increase in the U.S. Alongside stronger enforcement, the IIHS is also pointing to the importance of vehicle safety itself. As recent IIHS crash tests have shown, brands like Volvo and Tesla continue to lead in real-world safety, while more rugged, body-on-frame SUVs and pickups from Jeep and GM struggled to meet top-tier standards. The Institute argues that smarter policy needs to go hand in hand with safer vehicles - especially as large SUVs remain popular with American buyers with tight budgets can prioritize crash protection. Earlier this year, the IIHS published a list of smart choices for families shopping on a budget, outlining safe, affordable cars recommended for teen drivers. The goal is to remove barriers for entry-level buyers, making safety accessible even in used markets. The cultural differences between the U.S. and Canada are relatively minor, the IIHS notes, which makes Canada's success even more compelling. The organization says the U.S. doesn't need to invent new strategies - just implement and enforce the ones that already automakers are doing their part. According to recent safety rankings, a surprising brand topped the charts for 2025, reminding buyers that crash protection doesn't always come with a luxury badge. Still, the IIHS says manufacturers alone can't reverse the trend. It will take stronger laws, smarter enforcement, and real policy change - not just five-star marketing. Bugatti's New Business Strategy: Become Even More Elitist

The latest car news, reviews, and features. Bugatti, one of the most extreme high-end super-luxe automakers on Earth, is introducing a new car this week called Solitaire. It's fittingly named, as it will be the first of the brand's new 'ultra-exclusive program of one-of-one cars.' So forget assembly lines, we're going back to coachbuilding for kings and princes. There's no indication that Bugatti's existing lineup, which is also basically hand built, is being dissolved, but it looks like the French brand is going to start leaning a little harder into one-offs based on its announcement today. This is not a random pivot. Bugatti's been doing one-off treatments on its cars since its early days, and in fact, some of its most spectacular creations were the result of trying to outclass coachbuilders when the cottage industry for one-of-a-kind cars was thriving. The Type 57 SC Atlantic is an example of such a machine, dreamed up by Jean Bugatti to be art-on-wheels, as it's still rightfully considered to this day. As a middle-class road user myself, I find Bugatti's proclamation of creating not a car but a 'celebration of grace and elegance' a little eye-roll inducing. But as a lover of fine art and fanciful engineering, well, I can't deny that I'm excited to see what Bugatti's people will come up with. So far, this is the only teaser image of the Solitaire we've seen. Bugatti Without the limitations of mass production, there's a whole lot of room for designers and tuners to go hog wild. A return to coachbuilding (the classy way to describe one-off custom cars) makes sense for this moment in history, too, as we seem to be hurtling back towards guilded-age economics with a small group of people amassing so much money that a regular base-model Bugatti just isn't going to cut it. Or, looking at it another way, there might soon be more of a market for a single $5,000,000 car than 10 $500,000 ones. We'll see what exactly Bugatti's cooking up, and get more details on the Solitaire, this Thursday, August 7. Got a tip? Drop us a line at tips@
