Oshawa Generals Welcome Promising Finnish Forward Selected in First Round of Import Draft

Yahoo18-07-2025
On Wednesday, the Oshawa Generals announced that the hockey club has signed import forward Onni Kalto to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.
Kalto, 18, recorded 22 points (14 goals, 8 assists) through 44 games with the U20 TPS team in the U20 SM-sarja league in Finland during the 2024-25 season. Additionally, he played three regular season games and five playoff games for TPS in the top Finnish league Liiga.
The Generals used their first-round selection in the 2025 CHL Import Draft to select Kalto 41st overall. The Helsinki, Finland native was ranked 57th amongst European skaters by NHL Central Scouting for the 2025 NHL Draft. Unfortunately, the 6-foot-2 forward did not hear his name called and will re-enter the draft.
Ten OHL Players Named To USA's Hlinka Gretzky Cup Selection Camp USA announced the 38 players who have been invited to their
2025 Hlinka Gretzky Cup selection camp. The camp is being held in Plymouth, Michigan at the USA Hockey Arena from July 28-Aug. 3.
'Onni will bring some experience and leadership to our group. He skates well and sees the ice well. We are looking forward to seeing Onni in the red, white, and blue,' said Oshawa GM Roger Hunt.
Oshawa recently also signed their second-round pick from the import draft, Russian goalie Andrei Bondarev.
Now, we wait and see if they will sign their third-round selection Vadim Smirnov, or let him play out the 2025-26 season in Russia before trying to recruit him for the following year.
Oshawa Generals' "Crease Battle" Next Season Adds A Third Member; Russian Import Goaltender Signs With Team The
Oshawa Generals haven't had to worry about not knowing who their guy was in the crease when they needed a big win. A significant reason why the organization has advanced to consecutive OHL Finals is due to the goaltender they have had in the net, Jacob Oster.
Finnish forward Lauri Sinivuori was an import player for the Gens last season and played an important role in the middle six of their forward lineup. However, he is leaving the organization to head back home and play for the Finnish club he grew up playing and developing for, HIFK.
Czech defenseman David Svozil's playing destination for next season is still undetermined. He could return as Oshawa's third and final import player; however, he wasn't a regular in their lineup during the playoffs. Oshawa is losing Luca Marrelli, Andrew Gibson, and Luca D'Amato, so there are openings on the blueline. But the organization has recruited two 2008-born American defensemen already, Colin Feeley and Leo Laschon.

Bulls Reportedly Offered Josh Giddey Four-Year, $80 Million Deal

Bulls Reportedly Offered Josh Giddey Four-Year, $80 Million Deal originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Chicago Bulls' offseason has featured only a handful of storylines, with one of them being the re-signing of their guard, Josh Giddey. As a restricted free agent, Giddey has faced some challenges in securing a new contract. But NBA insider Jake Fischer recently shed more light on the situation. Fischer claimed that the Bulls had offered Giddey a four-year deal, worth $80 million. He wrote: "League sources say that the Bulls made an offer of $80 million over four years to restricted free agent Josh Giddey when the offseason commenced on June 30. Giddey, of course, is seeking an annual salary in the $30 million range. Chicago has been anchored in the $20 million range in annual value ever since its original offer." The offer presented by Chicago is the standard deal for most restricted free agents this season, except for rare cases like Cam Thomas. The general figure of $20 million a year appears to be the trend. Unfortunately, this is not something that Giddey appears to be interested in. It is a widely known fact that the Bulls guard has been seeking a deal that amounts to a rough estimate of $30 million a year. Given the state of most teams concerning the luxury tax aprons, franchises have been hesitant to make an offer of this nature. This has resulted in prolonged negotiations with neither side willing to budge. Considering that no deal has been signed, it is evident that Giddey isn't satisfied with the Bulls' offer. This leaves the door open for potential trade discussions. Recent reports have suggested that the Golden State Warriors could be inclined to trade for Giddey. The Warriors could trade Jonathan Kuminga for the Bulls guard, allowing the Dubs to add a multifaceted playmaker. Given the Warriors' predicaments involving their restricted free agent, there may be some roadblocks. In the overall sense, however, acquiring Giddey could be in Golden State's best interests. At 6'8" and only 22 years old, Giddey is an extremely talented guard. Given his expansive offensive skill set, he is sure to bring a lot of versatility and creativity to the table. Last season, the Bulls guard recorded an average of 14.6 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists, while shooting 46.5% from the field and 37.8% from three-point range. While the interest from the Warriors appears to be genuine, the Bulls may also wish to invest in retaining a player like him. Although the franchise doesn't have a direction at the moment, Chicago has the potential to improve. Featuring a young core, with players like Matas Buzelis and Coby White, the Bulls would benefit from retaining Giddey to develop into a competitive side in the story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Aug 11, 2025, where it first appeared.

Liberty's Breanna Stewart reveals she'll return from injury by her birthday

Liberty's Breanna Stewart reveals she'll return from injury by her birthday originally appeared on The Sporting News Breanna Stewart has been out injured for a couple weeks. The New York Liberty star is trying to ramp things up in hopes of a return soon. But even as that happens, Liberty fans got a piece of solid news in Stewart's new comments. She told reporters what the must is in her comeback from injury: "I'm on the training staff to let me be back, to free me a little bit, but definitely before my birthday, that's a non-negotiable. I have to be back before my birthday." When is Stewart's birthday? August 27. So that's two weeks or so that Stewie has to return to the floor. Stewart has been out since late July with a right leg injury that she sustained on July 26. Before the injury, Stewie was putting up 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game. She remains one of the best players on the planet. She'll turn 31 years old on her birthday, still near the peak of her powers. Stewart is one of the best winners in the history of sports, from Cicero-North Syracuse High School to the University of Connecticut and then on to the Seattle Storm and New York Liberty in the WNBA. She's also one of the best players in women's basketball history, a two-time WNBA MVP and one of the most skilled frontcourt players to ever step onto the hardwood. Stewart also helped the Liberty claim the championship last season, and they'll need her back to try and defend that crown. And it sounds like she'll be back very, very soon, in time for a little celebration. MORE: Indiana Fever's Lexie Hull reaches incredible career milestone after mom defends her

"He's the one who really made me a perfectionist" - Magic Johnson praised the coach who brought all his 'Magic' out

"He's the one who really made me a perfectionist" - Magic Johnson praised the coach who brought all his 'Magic' out originally appeared on Basketball Network. Like most NBA all-time greats, Earvin Magic Johnson also had an impactful mentor in his career. He found his in Michigan State coach Jud Heathcote. According to Johnson, Heathcote played a pivotal role in his formative years as a player. He revealed that it was Heathcote who taught him the importance of mastering his craft and working on his expertise. As he reflected on his time with Heathcote, Johnson expressed his gratitude for how his former coach brought the best out of him. For the legendary point guard, there would be no "Magic" Johnson if it hadn't been for Heathcote. "I owe a lot to Jud Heathcote," Johnson said back in 2015. "He's the one who really made me a perfectionist. He brought all the Magic out. Jud was special, because Jud paid attention to every detail. He used to say, 'Earv, if you're going to take that leaping leaner (shot), we've got to practice it. So, let's practice it 200, 300 times a day.'" "I would come back after I turned pro, and he would hear the ball downstairs at Jenison (Field House), and I'd be shooting and shooting. He'd holler, 'E, I'm going to be down there in one second!' He would come down, put on his warm-up stuff, put on his sneakers and he'd get out there and work me out for two or three hours," he fondly recounted. "I never forget those days. I have the (video) tapes, so I put them in often and watch them, with those little short shorts," Johnson added. The person who made Magic realize he was special Johnson's legendary college basketball career proved that Heathcote really did a tremendous job honing his skills. Magic was able to translate everything he learned from Heathcote to on-court success. In his sophomore and final year at Michigan State, Johnson led the Spartans to a historic NCAA championship run. He won the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four award in the process. However, Heathcote wasn't the only influential figure in Johnson's amateur career. Magic also once credited his Everett High School in Lansing teammate and close friend Reggie Chastine for boosting his confidence as a player. As per Johnson, Chastine was the person who truly believed in his abilities, especially during the times when he doubted himself. "You have to say, 'I'm going to take all your best shots. I'm not looking to fight, but I'm looking to dominate you.' Reggie taught me that," Magic once revealed. "He was the first one who really believed in me. I doubted myself, but he was looking to big things...I needed that." Magic pays it forward For his part, Johnson did not let the influential figures in his career down. He went on to become the No. 1 overall pick in the 1979 NBA Draft. Magic was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers where he quickly rose to superstardom. He helped the team win five NBA championships and went down as one of the greatest players in the history of the franchise. After his playing years, Johnson took it upon himself to pay it forward. He has already established himself as a great mentor for young players both on and off the story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 10, 2025, where it first appeared.
