Recording captured the chilling sound of the Titan submersible's final moment
The federal government released a chilling audio recording of the doomed Titan submersible as it imploded in the North Atlantic Ocean, killing five people nearly two years ago, officials said.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recording was made by a passive acoustic recorder about 900 miles from where the OceanGate vessel met its end.
NOAA'S Ocean Noise Reference Station Network is made up of 13 passive acoustic monitoring sites within the Northeastern continental United States.
A steady static was suddenly interrupted by a boom that the Coast Guard said it believes is the Titan buckling under the water's pressure, instantly killing all aboard.
The audio clip 'records the suspected acoustic signature of the Titan submersible implosion' on June 18, 2023, the Coast Guard said.
OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, 61, who was piloting the Titan; deep sea explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, 77, who was experienced in visiting the Titanic wreck site; British tycoon Hamish Harding, 58; and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, 48, and his son, Suleman, 19, were killed on the doomed journey to view the Titanic wreck site in the North Atlantic Ocean off Canada.
The voyage was nearly two hours old when the vessel lost contact with its support ship, setting off a frantic search.
Public fascination about the submersible was sparked by reports of 'banging noises' that had been detected, sparking talk over how long passengers could sustain themselves in a cramped tube running out of oxygen.

British man held over '£200k of meth' in suitcase
A British man has been arrested in Chile after custom officials claimed to have discovered £200k worth of crystal meth inside his suitcase. Sources in the South American country have confirmed the man to be William Eastment, from Milbourne Port in Somerset. He had been travelling from Mexico to Chile when, according to Chilean authorities, his suitcase was found to contain more than 5kg (11lbs) of methamphetamine. In a statement published online, customs officials said they had identified irregularities in one piece of luggage, prompting them to track down the owner. Rodrigo Díaz, Metropolitan Customs Regional Director, said: "Once the traveller retrieved the suspicious luggage from the airport baggage carousel, it was quickly identified by our officers and moved to the secondary screening area, where the drugs team confirmed the presence of a hidden object." More news stories for Somerset Listen to the latest news for Somerset Inside the suitcase, the online statement added, six plastic bags were found containing 5,100 grams (179 oz) of a white substance, later found to be methamphetamine after testing. Mr Eastment was then handed over to anti-narcotics officers at the airport, and then remanded in custody following an initial court hearing. A spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) said: "We are aware of a British man detained in Chile and are in contact with his family and the local authorities." ‘We reject your bill:' First Nations heads urge Quebec to scrap forestry reform bill
QUÉBEC - Representatives of the Assembly of First Nations Quebec-Labrador have told a provincial legislature committee that they reject the government's proposed forestry reform. AFNQL Chief Francis Verreault-Paul said today that Bill 97 does not respect First Nations' ancestral rights. The proposed legislation would divide the province's public forest land into three zones: conservation zones, multi-purpose zones and forest development zones where the forestry industry is prioritized. Natural Resources Minister Maïté Blanchette Vézina wrote in a recent memo that the government hopes at least 30 per cent of public forests in each region will become development zones by 2028. The AFNQL says that premise is unacceptable and would amount to privatizing one-third of First Nations territories for industrial interests. The leaders are urging the government to scrap the bill in its present form and restart the process with First Nations as co-authors. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 3, 2025.

‘Adolescence' Officially Becomes Netflix's No. 2 Most Popular English Series
It's official: Adolescence is now Netflix's No. 2 most popular English-language series of all time. As Deadline predicted last week, the British limited series has comfortably passed Stranger Things 4 to secure the title, amassing 141.2M views since its March 13 debut. There is still about 10 days left in its 91-day premiere window, meaning it'll likely rack up a few more views before its official total is solidified on the Netflix most popular list. More from Deadline 'Baby Reindeer' Legal Battle: Fiona Harvey Pours Scorn On Netflix Claim That "Cheeky Music" Showed Series Was Not Actually A "True Story" Netflix Unveils Premiere Date & First-Look Photo For Rom-Com 'The Wrong Paris' Starring Miranda Cosgrove & Pierson Fodé Netflix Lands Hot Action Comedy Package Teaming Andy Samberg & Jason Momoa It's hard to overstate what a feat Adolescence has achieved here, considering it is a modest, four-episode limited series with no star power attached. The series, about a 13-year-old boy (played by breakout Owen Cooper) accused of stabbing a female classmate to death after being drawn into the online manosphere, managed to generate a powerful word-of-mouth campaign that has allowed it to rival the latest installment of one of Netflix's most popular franchises. As we mentioned last week, Wednesday will retain its crown as the No. 1 English-language series on Netflix with an impressive 252M views in its premiere window. This sets an interesting stage for the arrival of Stranger Things 5, which Netflix revealed over the weekend will premiere in November. It'll be released in three parts, and it's sure to amass a very hefty viewership total by the end of its premiere weekend. When all is said and done, Stranger Things might reclaim the No. 2 spot eventually, not that that makes Adolescence's performance any less impressive. As for the weekly Top 10 from May 26 to June 1, Sirens once again took the top spot and the bragging rights as most-watched title on Netflix with 18.9M views. That's up about 2M views compared to the previous interval, when it debuted to 16.7M. Cold Case: The Tylenol Murders captured 11.9M views in its debut, putting it in second place. Meanwhile, Dept. Q broke out at No. 3 with 6M views. The Four Seasons spent its fifth week on the charts with 2.4M views, while Tyler Perry's She the People and Forever each generated 2.3M. On the film side of things, Fear Street: Prom Queen came in at No. 1 on the English list with 8.5M views. A Spanish crime thriller, A Widow's Game, was No. 1 in film with 15.4M views.
