Dad makes wild catch on foul ball while daughter covers his eyes at Yankees game

New York Post04-05-2025

A Yankees fan made what instantly became a Catch of the Year contender on Saturday.
As the Yankees played the Rays at home, a Bronx Bombers fan had his glove ready as a foul ball was on its way. But his daughter, who was sitting on his shoulders, ended up making the catch extra challenging.
As the foul ball came closer, the smiling daughter covered her dad's eyes with her hands.

Still, he was able to make the grab with his glove, pulling it into his chest to secure the ball and raising his hands in triumph.

'That's dad power right there,' Yankees broadcaster Jeff Nelson said as the highlight played on YES Network.
He then gave the ball to his daughter.
The Yankees ended up falling to the Rays on Saturday, 3-2, and also ran into an injury scare with Anthony Volpe, who is out of the lineup for Sunday's series finale.

The Yankees lost an early lead that included Aaron Judge's 11th home run of the season.
The Rays, who are occupying George M. Steinbrenner field in Tampa this year after Hurricane damage to Tropicana Field, broke their four-game losing streak after having a two-run inning to take the lead in the eighth inning.
The Rays took an early 2-0 lead in Sunday's rubber game.

George Kirby strikes out career-high 14, Mariners beat Angels 3-2 to snap their 5-game skid

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — George Kirby struck out a career-high 14 during seven innings of two-hit ball, and the Seattle Mariners snapped their five-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Kirby (1-3) issued no walks while retiring both his first 11 and his final 10 batters. His strikeouts were the most by a Mariners pitcher since James Paxton had 16 in May 2018, and he matched Miami's Max Meyer for the most strikeouts in a major league game this season. Donovan Solano drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth, and Randy Arozarena had an early RBI double among his three hits as the Mariners avoided a series sweep with their fourth win in 14 games. Taylor Ward hit a two-run homer in the fourth for the Halos, who struck out 18 times overall while losing for only the second time in six games. Andrés Muñoz earned his 18th save, returning from a week off and rebounding from back-to-back blown save opportunities in which he allowed his first earned runs of the entire season. Muñoz walked Jorge Soler leading off the ninth, but struck out Mike Trout to end it. Tyler Anderson (2-3) yielded eight hits with six strikeouts while pitching into the fifth inning of his ninth consecutive winless appearance. Arozarena hit a 345-foot single in the fifth when he failed to hustle out of the box, but he stole second and scored on Jorge Polanco's two-out single. Solano added another RBI single to chase Anderson. Key moment Trout was the Angels' first baserunner with a two-out single, and Ward immediately followed with his 18th homer. Kirby regrouped and struck out Chris Taylor with a perfect slider on the corner. Key stat Trout tied Rafael Palmeiro's major league record of 435 total bases against Seattle before scoring his 145th run against the Mariners to tie Rickey Henderson for that career record. Up next Yusei Kikuchi (1-5, 3.23 ERA) takes the Big A mound Monday night against the Athletics. Emerson Hancock (2-2, 5.19) pitches for the Mariners at Arizona. ___ AP MLB:

MLB Makes Strong Aaron Judge Statement on Sunday

MLB Makes Strong Aaron Judge Statement on Sunday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox prepare for Sunday night's series finale at Yankee Stadium, with first pitch set for 7:10 p.m. ET on ESPN, Major League Baseball made a pointed move of its own on Sunday morning. Advertisement Just hours before the rubber match in the storied AL East rivalry, MLB took to X to shine a spotlight on Aaron Judge's numbers through 63 games, figures that sit comfortably among the all-time great offensive campaigns. Major League Baseball posted that Judge "is putting together an all-time season: AVG: .390 HR: 21 RBI: 51 OBP: .488 SLG: .746 OPS: 1.234." His batting average (.390), slugging percentage (.746), on-base percentage (.488) and on-base plus slugging percentage (1.233) comfortably lead the MLB this season. Judge's 21 home runs (third in MLB) and 51 RBIs (sixth in MLB) further solidify his standing as the league's premier slugger. Advertisement He also leads the league in hits (92) and ranks second in runs (59). New York Yankees third baseman Oswald Peraza (left) and designated hitter Aaron Judge. John Froschauer-Imagn Images Since his debut with the Yankees on Aug. 13, 2016, Judge has steadily built a resume packed with milestones, including six All-Star selections, four Silver Slugger Awards and two Hank Aaron Awards (given to the top offensive performer in each league). He is also a two-time AL MVP (2022, 2024), including his record-breaking 62-homer season of 2022, which broke the previous Yankees franchise mark and stands as the American League single-season record. New York enters Sunday's finale tied at one game apiece in the three-game set after Boston's 10-7 victory on Saturday. Advertisement Overall, New York sits at 39-24 atop the AL East and second in league standings, behind only the Detroit Tigers (42-24).
