Behind the scenes of Brits Week for War Child's live shows

Independent26-02-2025

The 2025 Brits Week for War Child performances are underway, with stars including Rachel Chinouriri, Joy Crookes, Cat Burns, Frank Turner and Kasabian performing intimate, sold-out shows ahead of the Brit Awards on Saturday 1 March.
Proceeds from the 11 shows are going towards War Child's efforts to help provide protection, education and mental health support by children affected by war.
The organisation began putting on performances ahead of the annual ceremony around 2009, with their record-breaking double headline show of Coldplay and The Killers taking place at Shepherd's Bush Empire in London.
War Child then officially teamed up with the Brit Awards in 2019, in partnership with AEG Presents, to deliver what is now known as Brits Week.
The Independent spoke with Clare Sanders-Wright, Live Music Lead at War Child UK, to learn more about the work that goes into the shows each year.
How has the Brit Awards partnership evolved over the years and how has it helped raise awareness for War Child?
The relationship between War Child and the BRIT Awards has flourished since we began working together, and evolved into our annual BRITs Week shows. The biggest names in music have lent their support over the years, and BRITs Week has become a staple in the music industry's calendar, ultimately raising awareness of our work as well as millions of pounds, that have truly changed the lives of children caught in wars they didn't start around the world.
Since the inception of BRITs Week for War Child, the awareness raised by the BRIT Awards as well as the amazing artists and their teams who have donated their time and talents has seen music fans help raise over £7m to support the children we work with. Our local teams are in communities and refugee camps around the world, creating safe spaces for children to play, learn and access mental health support, as well as delivering immediate emergency aid in crisis situations, and this money has been integral to facilitating our continued work.
Why is War Child still relevant today — could you detail some of the work the organisation has been involved in in the past year?
War Child is more relevant today than ever before. It's never been more deadly to be a child, with an estimated one in five children living in or fleeing from conflict globally. Together with our partners, War Child delivers vital work in 14 countries across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America, all with our ultimate mission in mind – ensuring a safe future for every child affected by war.
In the past year, a huge focus for the time has been on the children affected by the conflict in Gaza. While a ceasefire has been announced, this is only the first step, and children will need specialist support to process the trauma they've experienced. War Child and our partners have stepped in to provide life-saving assistance, having reached more than 180,000 individuals, including upwards of 118,000 children – over 1 in 10 children in Gaza. This includes mental health and psychosocial support activities, and emergency provisions such as food, clean water, hygiene kits, warm clothing, and blankets.
War Child is also working to help address the needs of the estimated 17,000 unaccompanied and separated children in Gaza, many of whom have had their immediate family members killed. So far, over 580 of these children have been directly supported by War Child, with efforts ongoing to connect them with essential services and caregivers.
Our work has continued to span the globe, however. For example, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, 120,000 children have been displaced in 2025 alone, on top of the hundreds of thousands already displaced. Our teams have reached more than 227,000 people in the region so far with our emergency response, and supported more than 1,500 children with catch up classes through 2024.
What is the organisation's hopes for this year's Brits Week shows?
Awareness of our work. We've seen time and again that the artists we invite to play BRITs Week have fan bases that really care about the issues we work on. The goal is to give music lovers information about these crises around the world, what exactly it is that we do to support children caught in the middle of them, and ultimately, encourage them to engage and support us at and through these shows. I think artists love to see how engaged their fans are, and how much they care just as much as we do. So, while we obviously want to raise as much desperately needed funds as possible to support our work, we hope more people become aware of who we are, what we do, and are empowered to get involved however they can.
We're also really happy this year to be taking our shows outside of London and hope to see this expand year on year.

Dakota Johnson furious Chris Martin was 'dragging his feet' on wedding date

Actress Dakota Johnson and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin separated after nearly eight years together, which reportedly left the Fifty Shades film series star feeling "incredible pain" Dakota Johnson became unhappy longtime beau Chris Martin was "dragging his feet" over their wedding date, sources have claimed. The couple are believed to have ended their eight-year relationship in part over frustration around this, as Dakota, 35, was "sick" a date hadn't been set. The pair got engaged years after starting their on-off relationship in 2017, following Chris' divorce with actress Gwyneth Paltrow. ‌ A source told Page Six: "She was sick of him dragging his feet on setting a date for the wedding." Chris, 48, had been married to Gwyneth for 13 years and has two children with the actress. ‌ And other sources close to Dakota and Chris understand the couple have had disagreements about having kids together. Another insider said: "They broke up over Chris Martin not wanting to have more kids." Unlike the Coldplay singer, Dakota has never been married previously and she doesn't have any children. A source previously told the Sun: "They really tried to work through their issues but the age gap was often a problem. She'd [also] expressed that she may want children in the future, whereas Chris is kind of done with that part of his life." The source further told the outlet that Johnson and Martin had been "back and forth on issues for years" — and had discussions about everything, including children. The split reportedly left Dakota, who was in the Fifty Shades film series and last year's Madame Web, feeling "incredible pain". Coldplay's epic world tour continues and Dakota has been away on shoots for upcoming films Materialists and Verity recently. It is thought their flourishing careers have also provided challenges for their relationship. ‌ A source had told The Sun: "Dakota wanted this relationship to work. She not only loves Chris, but his two kids, and that loss feels incredibly painful. The decision to end things was amicable, but Dakota is finding it hard. Over the past year, it became clear that their relationship had stalled and wasn't moving forwards. "Settling down, as in Chris properly taking his foot off the pedal, isn't going to happen. And, ultimately, it was one of the many straws that broke the back of them." When news of the couple's split emerged recently, an insider told the press: "They just haven't been able to figure out to make it official. Dakota held a flame for them to be together because she loved him so much and loved his kids so much. "Breakups aren't instant and they continued to breakup and makeup and sometimes things would work when they were away from each other, while they were working because absence makes the heart grow fonder, but then they'd get back together and little things just kept adding up to where they weren't right for each other anymore... Dakota is devastated that she isn't going to be around his kids as much anymore, but wants them to know that she is always there for them."

EXCLUSIVE Major Hollywood star looks unrecognisable with her new look mystifying fans: can YOU guess who it is?

Hollywood superstar Dakota Johnson is undoubtedly one of the world's best-known faces. But fans reacted in shock this week when a clip of the actress behind the scenes on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon went viral — claiming she was almost unrecognisable. In the video, watched more than 2.7million times on TikTok, Dakota, 35, is seen with refreshed under eyes and glowing skin. On social media, some quipped she must have had a blepharoplasty—eyelid surgery that gently lifts and refreshes the eye area. Others even claimed it wasn't even her, suggesting 'she doesn't look like Dakota', 'nope, that's not Dakota' and 'she looks different, everyone in Hollywood is looking different'. The clip also sparked fresh speculation the How To Be Single actress may have had other cosmetic tweakments to enhance her appearance. The actress who recently split with Coldplay rocker Chris Martin, 48, has never admitted to going under the knife. But doctors have weighed in, suggesting her transformation is likely a result of a handful of subtle facial procedures. Dr Paul Banwell, a Sussex-based award-winning consultant plastic and cosmetic surgeon, told MailOnline: 'She may have had a conservative upper blepharoplasty procedure. 'Her eyes look bright and youthful, but we have to take other variables into account such as ageing, makeup, and other procedures. I think she looks awesome. An upper blepharoplasty involves removing excess skin or fat from the upper eyelid area to tighten the skin and change the look or hooded or droopy eyelids. Typically a 45 minute to hour long procedure, it is performed under anesthesia. 'As you age, your eyelids' skin stretches, and the muscles supporting them weaken,' Dr Banwell said. 'As a result, excess fat present around the eye may push forward causing droopy upper lids and bulging. 'Besides the ageing effect, the sagging or drooping skin can actually reduce your vision and cause problems with your visual fields.' But Mr Kshem Yapa, a London-based consultant plastic surgeon specialising in facial surgery and rhinoplasty, told MailOnline that while Dakota's eyes 'look rejuvenated', it is 'not obvious that she's had an upper blepharoplasty'. Instead, she may have had 'volume replacement in her lower eyelids, such as filler but more likely modest facial fat grafting', he added. He added: 'There seems to be a little bit of improvement in skin quality in the lower eyelid and this is unlikely to be just from a blepharoplasty.' Facial fat grafting, also known as facial fat transfer or lipofilling, involves fat being harvested from one area of the body and injected into the face to restore volume, reduce wrinkles, and improve contours. Earlier this year, in its annual trends report, the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery revealed that facial plastic surgeons reported a 50 percent rise in the average number of fat grafting procedures performed in 2024. This trend, the Academy noted, was 'likely fuelled' by patients who wanted to restore lost volume and sculpt or tighten different areas of the face. Mr Yapa added: 'I don't think she's had any major surgery, it's really good subtle work, likely non-surgical. 'She seems to be a little bit slimmer in the cheeks specifically and this could be just from weight loss. 'Of course, buccal fat reduction can be done modestly to give some slimming to the face and this is possible.' Vienna-based dermatologist and aesthetic doctor Dr Alma Kamenica, also said she could not be certain Fifty Shades Darker star Dakota had definitely undergone an upper blepharoplasty. But she added: 'Her lips also appear fuller compared to earlier years, which could point to the use of lip filler to gently enhance volume while maintaining her natural look. 'Her nose might have undergone a slight refinement early in her career, perhaps a soft adjustment to the tip or bridge that complements her delicate features. 'Her skin now looks incredibly smooth and radiant, with a more even tone and texture, something that suggests she may have benefited from advanced treatments like skin tightening devices such as Morpheus8 Burst. 'These treatments can dramatically enhance the skin's overall glow and firmness.' Online, other medical professionals also speculated Dakota could have undergone dental work in recent years. Sharing photos of the star prior to 2019, US-based prosthodontist Dr Sara Hahn, told her 156,000 TikTok followers she clearly had a space in between her teeth, known as a diastema. 'It doesn't look like veneers but I do think composite bonding has been done or reshaping of the front teeth because we went from a very flat to a very curved appearance,' she added. Dakota has never confirmed if she has undergone any procedures. But in a revealing conversation with Glamour magazine in 2017 about her skincare regime, she said: 'I buy a bunch of products but end up not using any of them. I just like the way they look. 'I truly have the simplest routine: I wash my face in the morning and at night, then moisturise, during the day I add sunscreen.'
