Heavy rain forecast puts MSEDCL on high alert

Time of India24-05-2025

Nagpur: A three-day heavy rainfall forecast for Nagpur and many parts of Vidarbha has put Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (
MSEDCL
) on high alert. The power utility has initiated emergency protocols to ensure an uninterrupted supply throughout the monsoon season.
MSEDCL chairman and managing director Lokesh Chandra chaired a statewide virtual review meeting on Friday issuing directives to ensure a swift and effective response to any power outages caused by natural calamities. He emphasised that emergency control rooms must be activated immediately and operate 24x7. On Wednesday, MSEDCL was caught off guard as citywide blackouts, lasting hours, were reported following heavy rain.
MSEDCL control rooms began functioning from May 23 with teams mobilised for real-time redressal of outages. Chandra directed that any disruption in power supply must be resolved immediately. If delays are unavoidable, customers must be informed promptly through SMS, WhatsApp groups, social media, and media outlets. The CMD also made it clear that all outage durations will be closely monitored from the headquarters, and delays without justification will be taken seriously.
Given the likelihood of infrastructure damage due to strong winds and heavy rain, each MSEDCL circle has been ordered to stock essential repair equipment — including electric poles, transformers, wires, and oils. Chandra emphasised that all engineers, support staff, and contracted agencies must be fully prepared with manpower, materials, and vehicles.

Konkan Railway seeks CM's help to prevent grid failures during rains

Mumbai: Konkan Railway (KR) has urged chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to ensure an uninterrupted power supply from MSEDCL during the monsoon, warning that power grid failures could trap trains inside tunnels. Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd managing director Santosh Kumar Jha said, "The CM has taken the matter seriously and directed MSEDCL to act accordingly. " The entire KR route was electrified in 2022, and trains now operate on 25 kV electric traction. KR is on high alert with the monsoon timetable in effect from June 15 to Oct 20 — the duration has been reduced by 15 days compared to previous years. Sectional speeds are adjusted to ensure safety during this period of challenging weather. KRCL has intensified pre-monsoon measures, including extensive cleaning of drains and cuttings and execution of geo-safety works to prevent boulder falls and soil slips. ha said that 24x7 control rooms are operational in Belapur, Ratnagiri, and Madgaon throughout the monsoon. Medical teams are positioned at Chiplun, Ratnagiri, Verna, Madgaon, Karwar, and Udupi to handle any emergencies. Over 630 trained personnel will patrol vulnerable zones, supported by RMVs at nine key locations and excavator-mounted wagons at strategic points. Accident Relief Medical Vans with OTs are deployed at Ratnagiri and Verna. An Accident Relief Train (ART) is also stationed at Verna for rapid response. LED signals, self-recording rain gauges at nine stations, flood alert systems at key bridges, and anemometers at viaducts and major bridges help monitor rainfall and wind. Walkie-talkies, satellite phones, VHF sets, and 1-km interval EMC sockets ensure seamless communication. Real-time updates are available on or helpline 139.

41 villages in district face overnight power outage

Pune: As many as 6,000 consumers faced power cuts throughout Friday night in 41 villages in the district because of damage to 40-km transmission cables in forest area during strong winds and heavy rain. The villages where electricity supply was disrupted included Velhe, Pabe, Dapodi and Vajeghar. The power was snapped at around 11.30 pm on Friday and rectified only on Saturday morning. Electricity transmission cables from four poles supplying of 33kV to the Pabe substation was snapped near Kamthadi on the Satara highway amid heavy rainfall. MSEDCL said the time taken to conduct repairs was long due to the cables were in the rugged terrain. Power utility staff faced difficulties in repairing cables because of slippery mud in the paddy fields and forest area. A team of 10 technicians carried out the repair work overnight. While repairing cables, lead technician Sameer Mujawar was attacked by two foxes, but he was not injured as his colleagues raised alarm loudly and threw light at the animals to prevent harm, causing them to flee, the power company said in a statement. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kickstart your new journey with the Honda Shine 125 Honda Learn More Undo The repairs and other works were completed by morning.
