2025 U.S. Open: Forecast shows storms could impact play at Oakmont

2025 U.S. Open: Forecast shows storms could impact play at Oakmont

Yahoo2 days ago

In 1973, overnight an overnight rainstorm made conditions just right for Johnny Miller to shoot a record-breaking 63 in the final round to win the U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club.
In 1994, Oakmont saw Ernie Els brave scorching temperatures nearing 100 degrees to win the U.S. Open in a playoff over Loren Roberts and Colin Montgomerie.

Weather has always been part of the story at Oakmont — arguably golf's most menacing venue — and while players probably won't be dealing with triple-digit heat like the Big Easy did in '94, but there could be some adverse conditions during the 125th playing of the U.S. Open.
What is the U.S. Open weather forecast?
The first few days of the week, when players will be participating in practice rounds, look pretty promising, according to meteorologists with WTAE in Pittsburgh.
Rain is expected on Monday with a 60 percent chance of thunderstorms, but Tuesday and Wednesday should provide some beautiful weather as players put final touches on their preparation.

Thursday will be much of the same as players tee off for the U.S. Open. Sunny conditions and high temperatures in the mid-80s are expected for first round action, with light winds of 5-10 mph from the southwest.
Friday is where it could start to get a little shaky. There's a small chance of rain showers during the day and it increases as the day goes on, increasing to 40 percent later in the evening. Highs are projected to be in the low 80s with light winds.
Saturday looks like the worst day of the week. Forecasters are calling for a 60 percent chance of rain, with showers in the morning followed by thunderstorms in the afternoon. Still, the temps will be comfortable (mid-70s) and the wind won't play too much of a factor at 5-10 mph out of the south.
Sunday also has rain in the forecast after thunderstorms throughout the night Saturday. Fans and players might not see the sun during the final round, either. Cloudy with a 50 percent chance of showers and light winds from the southeast.

Of course, weather is volatile and forecasts can always change, so be sure to check back throughout the week for more accurate conditions at Oakmont.

Western Pennsylvania experiences flash flooding ahead of 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont
Before the players even arrive at Oakmont, the area will have already seen a lot of moisture. Flash flood warnings were out for parts of western Pennsylvania on Sunday, including several counties in the Pittsburgh metro. It remains to be seen how that impacts the difficulty of the golf course — if at all — but anyone attending the U.S. Open should definitely wear shoes that can handle some mud.

Sunny, warm weather sticks around for a couple more days

Sunshine and comfortable temperatures will have you ready to head outdoors on Wednesday and Thursday, but remember the sunscreen. The UV index will be in the high range, with sunburn possible in as little as 20 minutes. Dry weather sticks around, but a few more clouds will mix with the sunshine, and you'll notice warmer temperatures and a slight uptick in the humidity. Friday will start dry, but scattered showers return during the afternoon and evening, and wet weather continues as we head into the weekend. Right now, Severe Weather team 11 is tracking a few rounds of showers and possibly some heavier rain Saturday, and scattered showers and a few storms Sunday. Decreasing clouds, humidity dropping during the day

We'll have clouds and sun this afternoon with breezy conditions, and temperatures will reach the mid to upper 70s. A few isolated showers are possible, mainly south and east of Pittsburgh this afternoon through the evening. Comfortable conditions will settle in, with a clearing sky tonight and into early Wednesday morning, and lows dropping to the 50s. This clearing will give you a chance to catch a glimpse of the last full moon of spring, the full 'Strawberry Moon,' which reaches its peak Wednesday morning at 3:45 a.m. We'll have a pleasant start to Wednesday with plenty of sunshine and temperatures jumping to the low 80s. Wildfire smoke from Canada will begin to mix in a little more later Wednesday afternoon and evening and continue into Thursday. Make sure to check back for the latest on this throughout the week. This dry stretch will also continue through much of Friday, with the chance of a few showers or storms returning later Friday and into the weekend. Make sure you check the latest forecast on Channel 11 News. If you are heading to the U.S. Open at Oakmont, be sure to grab the sunscreen and a hat, as the UV Index is expected to climb into the high range with the threat of sunburn in as little as 20 minutes.
