Lando Norris claims pole for Belgian Grand Prix

The 423 days ago
LANDO NORRIS RESISTED mounting pressure from his McLaren team-mate and series leader Oscar Piastri to take pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix.
The 25-year-old Briton, whose mother Cisca is Belgian, shrugged aside concerns over his struggles on Friday to clock a best lap in one minute and 40.562 seconds, beating Australian Piastri by 0.085 seconds as McLaren reeled off a convincing front row lock-out.
It was his fourth pole this year and the 13th of his career.
Charles Leclerc qualified third with a late improved lap enabling him to overhaul defending world champion Max Verstappen's best effort for Red Bull.
Alex Albon was fifth for Williams ahead of Mercedes' George Russell, Yuki Tsunoda in the second Red Bull, Racing Bulls' rookies Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson and Sauber's Gabriel Bortoleto.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton failed to make it out of the Q1 session for Ferrari and will start Sunday's 44-lap race from 16th on the grid in the company of Mercedes' mercurial rookie Kimi Antonelli, who was 18th and two-time champion Fernando Alonso 19th for Aston Martin.
After victories in Austria and Britain, Norris will be seeking a third consecutive win to overhaul Piastri's nine-point lead in the title race.
'It was a decent lap and I'm happy,' said Norris. 'Everyone was a bit worried after yesterday, but I wasn't that far off.
'There were just a few little issues we had. I was confident that I could get back to the top.'
Piastri, who had been faster than Norris in Friday's action, said: 'It's a bit disappointing. The second lap was coming together well and then I made a mistake into turn 14 and I lost a lot of time. The car was very good again, but it's about fine margins.'

Leclerc said he was surprised by his time.
'I didn't expect it. We thought we were a lot more behind. We thought we had something more in the car with the upgrade, but it was a good lap. It takes time to maximise those upgrades.'
After a masterclass from Verstappen in the sprint race earlier, Red Bull chose to change his 'skinny' rear wing to a bigger high-downforce version in anticipation of Sunday bringing heavy rain to the sweeping Ardennes circuit.
Norris found his pace to clock 1:41.010, six-tenths better than the Ferrari, followed by Piastri two-tenths down in second, the pair showing McLaren's intent under grey skies before a frantic finale during which Hamilton found a late survival lap which was promptly deleted for exceeding track limits.
That left Gabriel Bortoleto 15th for Sauber and eliminated the Ferrari driver along with Alpine's Franco Colapinto, Mercedes' rookie Antonelli, who replaced Hamilton, and the two Aston Martins of Alonso and Lance Stroll.
Q2 began with everyone on softs and Verstappen fastest, trimming Norris's time, before Piastri and Norris took over for the opening runs.
The Dutchman chose not to run again, leaving the usual suspects a clear run to the top-ten shootout while the Haas pair Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman exited along with Alpine's Pierre Gasly, Hulkenberg and Sainz.
Russell, who was stripped of victory last year because of an underweight car, was first out for Q3, but it was Verstappen again on top before the McLarens flexed their muscle, Norris beating Piastri by 0.189 on their first runs.
Verstappen's final run on fresh softs was not enough to resist an improved lap from Leclerc as Piastri also failed to improve, leaving Norris to claim pole position.
'Oh my god, that was really, really bad' said Verstappen, as a rise in track temperature beyond 40 degrees subdued his performance.

Shels boss hail ‘aggressive' signing as champs raid Premier Division strugglers

Shelbourne boss Joey O'Brien has hailed the signing of 'one of the standout players' in the Premier Division this season. The League of Ireland champions have raided Cork City, who are rock bottom of the Premier Division, for their French defender Milan Mbeng. Shels, who are in Champions League action on Wednesday night in Azerbaijan, have now made two signings in a matter of days, with Mbeng joining Ireland Under-21 international Sean Moore. He arrived on Sunday from West Ham on a 'multi-year deal', similar to their latest recruit. The Reds will pay Cork City a fee for the 23-year-old, although neither side disclosed the amount. Mbeng has played 19 times in all competitions during the first half of the 2025 season, and has registered two assists. He said: 'I'm really happy and proud to join this great club. From the first moment I heard about the opportunity from Joey (O'Brien) and Luke (Byrne, technical director), I knew it was something I wanted. 'I can't wait to wear the colours, meet the fans, and give everything I have for the team. I'm ready to work hard and help the club as much as I can at an important time in the season.' He was at Belgian side Charleroi before his move last January to Cork City, where he signed a one-year contract. Shels boss O'Brien had been eager to add to his defence and the arrival of the versatile youngster - Mbeng can play at centre-back or right-back - will strengthen his hand. O'Brien said: 'We're delighted to bring Milan in. He's been one of the standout players in the league since coming in at the start of the season and has shown real quality throughout. 'He's young, ambitious, and fits exactly what we're trying to build here. We're really pleased he's committed to us, and we're looking forward to helping him continue his development. 'He's versatile, exciting, and will bring real quality to the squad as we push into the second half of the season. Credit to everyone behind the scenes for getting it over the line.' And technical director Byrne added: 'We have been watching him for a long time and really think he suits how we play. He's aggressive, athletic and a composed footballer who plays different positions in different systems. 'He's a great age profile and we see massive potential in him. We're happy with the additions we've made to the squad this month, the profile of player coming into the club is in line with what we are trying to build.' Australia 2027 to be most accessible Rugby World Cup in history, organisers vow

Rugby World Cup organisers have promised their Australia 2027 event will be the biggest and most accessible tournament in history with a million tickets costing less than AUD$100 (€56). More than 2.5 million tickets will be made available with tickets for pool matches, up for grabs in a closed pre-sale to supporters who register on starting today until the end of January 2026. They will start at just AUD$40 (€22.50) with children's tickets available from AUD$20 (11.25). The pre-sale period will be open during February with a three-week general application phase next May. 'This ticketing program has been designed with one simple principle: put the fans first,' World Rugby chair Brett Robinson said. 'For the first time in over two decades, Men's Rugby World Cup returns to Australian shores, and we're determined to make it bigger, bolder, and more accessible than ever before. 'With more than 2.5 million tickets available, a wide range of pricing options, and innovations like the Superfan Pass, we're giving every fan — whether lifelong supporter or first-time attendee — the chance to be part of something truly special. 'Rugby World Cup 2027 is more than a tournament; it's a celebration of everything great about our game. It's about reigniting the love for rugby, inspiring a new generation, and showcasing our values to the world. We want every ticket, every cheer, every moment to help grow the game worldwide.' Ireland supporters will learn their team's pool opponents this December when the draw is made based on seedings based on world rankings set after November's Autumn Nations Series of Test matches. The match schedule is scheduled to be announced next January with an expanded 24-team tournament featuring an additional Round of 16 knockout round. Seven Australian cities will stage matches, with the opening match in Perth, Western Australia on October 1. Townsville and Brisbane in Queensland, Newcastle in New South Wales, Adelaide in South Australia, and Melbourne, Victoria will also host matches as well as Sydney, including the final on November 13. Organisers on Tuesday also announced a Superfan Pass offering guaranteed access to buy up to four tickets for any of the 52 matches, including the final. On sale from August 5, there will be 2,027 passes made available at €489 (AUD$750). Launching their ticketing programme three days after the British & Irish Lions and Australia played their second Test in front of 90,307 supporters at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, World Rugby chief executive Alan Gilpin insisted the governing body had not missed a trick staging the 2027 World Cup final at the iconic stadium and the showcase match would be in Stadium Australia, currently known as Accor Stadium, where this Saturday's third Lions Test will be played. 'The amazing thing here is it's such a competitive environment between states and cities for sports content,' Gilpin said. 'Sydney put their best foot forward and were an amazing host of the semi-finals and final in 2003. 'I had the privilege of being here then. They will be again in 2027. What we saw on Saturday is that rugby can make some noise in Melbourne as well. We're looking forward to Melbourne being part of that tournament. 'There's a stadium in Perth that wasn't there in 2003 that's amazing. The venue landscape is really exceptional. We're excited to get access to those great venues.' Wallabies prop Alaalatoa ruled out of final Lions Test

AUSTRALIA TIGHTHEAD PROP Allan Alaalatoa has been ruled out of Saturday's third Test against the Lions due to injury. The experienced 31-year-old has started both Tests against the Lions so far, but will miss the final leg of the series after suffering a shoulder injury last weekend in Melbourne. Advertisement Western Force prop Tom Robertson has backed Alaalatoa up from the Australian bench in both games so far, while the injury means the explosive Taniela Tupou could be back in the mix for the third Lions Test. Waratahs tighthead Tupou, who has been open with the media about his struggles for form and fitness, has been part of the wider Wallabies squad during this Lions series but hasn't been picked in Joe Schmidt's matchday 23 so far. 59 times capped Tupou will join French club Racing 92 next season in the hopes of reinvigorating his club career, but he would surely love to show his ability at Test level again this weekend. Reds tighthead Zane Nonggorr is another option for Schmidt. The Wallabies will also be without wing Harry Potter, who suffered a hamstring injury in last weekend's second Test, meaning that there will definitely be a change in the Australian back three. Force wing Dylan Pietsch is among the contenders for that spot out wide. Flanker Rob Valetini returned from a calf injury last weekend but was replaced at half time due to what Schmidt described as tightness.
